Black Legion Army Blog

Recommended Posts

Based on Midian's Abaddon Conversion, my friend Nick and I made our own for his Black Legion army which is taking shape. Though we made it months ago (back when Apocalypse came out) I've only just managed to get a couple of pictures of it.

So here goes:

Much better than the GW one by far, then again he's an ancient fellah!

Well, the GW has stood up well to the ravages of time. I like him a great deal, but he's just so short (no wonder he's so angry at the Imperium!)

The plastic Chaos Lord kit includes a number of pieces that are very similar indeed to Abaddon's armour, so we tried to make him as close to the metal model where possible. That necessitated a slight conversion to the shoulder pads.

  • 1 month later...

I've edited this thread to continue progress on the Black Legion. I've always liked the Black Legion, but it was Midian's Black Legion threads that really fired my imagination. When my friend Nick (Night-Fish) said he was interested in starting a Chaos army, it was a small matter to push him into doing Black Legion.

Mostly it's my conversions and his painting - we've done two Legionnaire squads (one painted) and I've spent the weekend working on some Beserkers. We've deliberately kept away from certain traditional Chaos touches, which will become more obvious as this thread continues. <_<

These are some of the Beserkers:

We're also planning on a small contingent of allied Word Bearers using them as a Chosen Squad. Here's a couple: #

And this was just too fun:

Just an update, now I have daylight and a better camera:

I'm particularly proud of this guy. ;)

And this is Gribble. I found him in a bitzbox, an unholy blend of a squig, green-stuff, and genestealer arms. I'm considering making a few more and using them as lesser daemons - mindless denizens of the warp pulled onto the material plane to kill things.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Gribble.jpg

I was considering painting Gribble with Goblin Green, just because in some way he reminds me of Slimer, from Ghostbusters.

The Chosen Squad is made entirely from Black Templars and Dark Angels - I can't take pictures of the whole squad because they're at Nick's, unfortunately. As a unit, though, they definitely stand out from the rest of the army.

And now I suppose I better explain why - this is our rationale. We had the idea of making the Black Legion seem very militaristic. Grizzled veterans of the Long War against the False Emperor and his lackeys. One of the things we wanted to avoid was horned helmets - they seemed a little silly to us. So we've also used a fair amount of loyalist bits - MkIV, V and VI helmets, along with the few MkIII helmets we could find - so on and so forth.

Fluff-wise, I'd envisaged that the Lord would be very down-to-earth, and had the dim idea that during the Heresy, he'd been a Sergeant, a 'man of the people'. He's relatively recently managed to take over the Warband. His name is Melchor. The Chosen Squad is going to be a small unit of allied Word Bearers, and there we show the different side of Chaos. They're the fanatical zealots, and they have the robes, the (im)purity seals, the horns and the like.

It's actually pretty nifty, because as we expand the army it represents Melchor gaining slightly more favour in the Legion. I imagine that he's somewhat disparaged, and in a relatively minor position. An analogy of sorts would be to compare him with Honsou in Dead Sky, Black Sun. At the moment, we have two squads of Legionnaires, a squad of Chosen, a squad of Beserkers (though they're Black Legion, too), a Forgeworld Dreadnought and a Vindicator.

The Beserkers have also avoided the bunny ears. I wanted to emphasise the "grizzled veteran" thing, and I went back to the idea that Khorne used to be a little more multi-faceted than he is now. I imagine that these grim warriors do take skulls for their patron, but they're not mindless idiots. They haven't been psycho-lobotomised like the World Eaters. I wanted to capture some sense of nobility in them.

One thing we've decided is that there won't be a Sorceror in this army (partly because Nick doesn't like them.) - I've reasoned that perhaps Melchor has done something to displease Zaraphiston. None of the Sorcerors in the Legion will aid Melchor, because it's not worth crossing Zaraphiston to do so. Still, as Melchor gains more favour and greater influence, who knows what'll happen?

Stay tuned! :P

I like the mix of loyalist parts Mol, you don't see that too often around here. Is that an Ork Chainblade I can see on the Poleaxe?

Yeah, it's the head of a Chainaxe from one of the nobs in the AOBR boxed-set. (Sorry for not replying to this earlier, I must've missed it.)

gribble is just awesome in its purest form realy like your abby and the chosen

I'm likking Gribble, too. I just need to convince Nick to take Daemons at some stage! I like the idea that these truly are 'lesser' daemons, just warp-creatures pulled onto the material plane, rather than daemons like the Daemonettes, Bloodletters, etc, that seem to have personalities.

keep it pink, it kinda looks like one of the exploding isz from the maxx

Not quite sure what you mean. :)

Some of these bersekers, like the champion and the heavy-axed dude are really some nice conversion.

Can't wait to see them painted!

I'm really fond of the "heavy-axed dude." These Beserkers are called 'The Headhunters'. I'm going to name the Skull Champion eventually. I liked the idea of making "the big guy" in the squad. Hopefully when they're put together you'll still be able to tell who the Skull Champion is. Nick did want a powerfist on the Champion, but then did a bunch of math-hammer and figured it wasn't worth it in the current circle we play. So I found a metal chainaxe from one of the Khorne Champions - and we gave him the tallest trophy rack in the squad! :) (The helmet will be a Castigator one, I understand...)

Here's decent pictures of the nearly-completed (on my end, at least) Berserker squad.

And this is our Dreadnought, Karnak:

As you can tell, in this picture he's missing his head (Nick's got it) so I mocked up a brilliantly sculpted replacement so as not to spoil your viewing experience:

Noice. I'm digging the Berserkers; they communicate their Khorne-ness in a way that merges with your militaristic, lower-key aesthetic. The Tau head is a great tough. :)

Also, that Dreadnought head needs to stay.

Also also, good job on the trophy spike with the Ork skull. What diameter of rod is that, and did you put it right through the skull? Or is it two pieces connected by a pin?

With light fading, I've just gone outside to get some decent pictures of the Berserker I've just changed. It was the one kneeling down with the Tau head - I decided I didn't like him, so I've knocked up this conversion instead:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Black%20Legion/Headhunter-8c.jpg

Tomorrow, I plan to sculpt the tuft of hair in the grasping fist, the scabbard for a sword at his waist and some ribbing in his bolt pistol arm (which will be broken and repositioned slightly.)

Also also, good job on the trophy spike with the Ork skull. What diameter of rod is that, and did you put it right through the skull? Or is it two pieces connected by a pin?

I'll ask Nick about the rod - we've put about ten pins into the Dreadnought, and the arms are modular. He also pivots at the waist - that's so we can take the two halves apart for painting. We wanted to use a trophy rack from the Chaos vehicle sprue, but it was too flimsy - so we decided to drill through the trophy rack into the body of the dreadnought (and through an Ork skull from the boyz sprue.)

Oh and with sculpting skills like that why don't you work for GW ;)?

It's a mystery to us all...

Yeeesss.... the student becomes the master...

Don't make me break out Drach'nyen......

Hah. On a more serious note, I've been reading IA: Black Legion, and found a few useful quotes.

The Legion is a flexible fighting force that can perform well and adapt quickly to any combat situation. it was trained to respond sharply and decisively to the tactical orders of the Warmasters and consequently the chain of command within the Legion was very efficient... Abaddon has done much to restore discipline, mainly through fear and horrendous violence inflicted on those that displease him.

Warbands of virutally any size and composition can be found following Black Legion Champions - ranking officers from older times or newly emerged leaders who have won favour through their violent deeds. At times, such warbands rally together under the banner of a greater Champion or even Abaddon himself, for a major raid or incursion into the hated Imperium.

That ties in with our ideas to make a no-frills, militaristic Black Legion. It also ties in with the ideas I had to have Melchor working as a 'vassal' of Severax. Perhaps he also participated in the wars against the Sword Bearers.

Food for thought, definitely. ;)
