FAQ: Painting Blood Angels

spray on mechrite red

light spray blood red

devlin mud wash directly into recesses

highlight with pure blasing orange

create a ridge highlight with vomit brown

This is my method and i think generates pretty good looking red results.

 

1. Chaos Black Undercoat

2. 50:50 Chaos Black & Scab Red

3. Scab Red

4. 50:50 Scab Red & Blood Red

5. Blood Red Leaving some of the above stage in recesses.

6. Highlight Using Blazin Orange

7. Highlight 50:50 Blazin Orange:Skull White

8. Baal Red Wash All Over

9. Red Ink (I use Coat D'Arms) 2 Layers

10. Using a Chesnut Ink in the crevases don't get any on the armour.

11. Using a white dot in the middle of the highlights which are showing through.

I use this for my top units and some of my ASM but this is a slow way to paint.

 

I've also skipped the first 4 steps and just use a dragon red spray from army painter and do the rest of the steps its no quite as deep and rich but its cool.

Some of these are way to complex for their own good, most steps can be knocked out completely if the proper collies where used.

 

I do:

 

White spray

Thinned down red gore

Heavy badab black wash

Then thinned down blood red (avoid the recesses, and apply coats as needed)

 

 

The only thing I'm thinking of maybe adding is a touch of orange on the tips of more protruding plates of armour because it looks neat, but I like them as they are, very simple and superbly effective. I will take a picture of the finished product and upload when I get home

I have a fairly simple way that looks OK;

1) Spray Prime "Chaos Black"

2) Base Coat "Mechrite Red"

3) Layer on 1:1 ratio Blood Red: Mechrite Red ( Or over Brush)

4) Feather on a very light coat of "Blood Red"

5) Thin Edge Highlight with "Blazing Orange"

--- Stop Here if you want a fairly light blood angel.---

6) Recess wash all the Armour with "Devlan Mud"

7) Mop all of the armor with a watered down "Baal Red"

 

After all this do all the details however you like and you have a rather good Blood Angels Space Marine.

Hello everyone. Just recently, my friend gave me boxes of stuff to sort through for an alright price (basically has a full Dark Eldar army in there) anyways, some marines cropped up and I always fancied having a go at Blood Angels but just can't get a dark/black wash to sort of stay put, just pools or runs off like its done something wrong. Any tips? Thanks!

I use a different method, but it has a nice effect, and requires very little brush use, no paint pots and you get no brush marks.

 

Materials:

Skull white spray paint

Blood red spray paint

Magenta (Red) ink

Chestnut ink(Brown) ink

Tank brush or big brush similar to the exact siz of a tank brush

 

Note: Avoid heavy spraying in a single area, if you are thinking that you are spraying to much, stop and move to the next area

 

Step 1 Undercoat

 

I recommend to spray the model like so:

Turn the model on it's stomach feet facing toward you as you spray

Use skull white spraypaint

Spray feet to head

Spray left side to right side

Spray right side to left side

Spray head to feet

Make sure you get the hard to reach areas with a quick shot opf spray paint, practice on a surface till you get a one shot with only a little paint used

Wait ten minutes or until an outer drying has occured

 

Stand the model up normally and make one final light sweep of any areas

 

Step 2 Priming

 

Use blood red spraypaint

Spray left side to right side

Spray right side to left side

Spray head to feet

Make sure you get the hard to reach areas with a quick shot opf spray paint, practice on a surface till you get a one shot with only a little paint used

Wait ten minutes or until an outer drying has occured

 

Stand the model up normally and make one final light sweep of any areas

 

You may want to wait awhile before you preceed, I don't think it matters, but at least wait till the model and fully dry to the point , when no paint comes off the model after being sprayed

 

 

Step 3 Ink Mixing

 

Obtain a pallette, I use a tile as it helps in mixing a lot better.

Blot a large amount of red ink in one area of the pallette

Blot portions of the red ink with brown ink, begin with a 70 red/ 30 brown mix

Add thin amunts of water, just add a few drops to the mix

Mix the paint together till you get a thinkness of milk/blood it will be thicker than the water, but smooth enough to coat models

make sure that the color is the consistency to blood, but not have any purple tinge to it, you want more of a hollywood movie style blood color effect

 

Step 4 Ink Application

 

Hold the spraypainted model and stand it upright as if standing tall

Begin taking medium to large amounts of mixed ink in the large brush and blooch it and smoother the miniature in the hard to reach areas

Apply medium amounts of mixed ink to all areas of the model

Find the areas where the ink is pooling and soak it with the brush and apply it elsewhere on the model where needed

The key to this inking is your fingers

If you fingers have ink on them then your coating the minature correctly

If your fingers are clean then the miniature has very little ink on it and may not have enough to obtain the blood drenched effect

 

Allow the model a generous amount of time to dry as the ink will take a bit and a finger taking of the wet ink will ruin that spot

 

When the miniature is dried it should have a dull blood drenched haxe to it and will high;light the detailks and completely upgrade the blood red spraypaint two fold

I'm no expert but I do the following and the results are not bad

 

Steps 1-5 are really fast as you can get away with being a little sloppy. Just try and stay away from anything you're going to paint lighter colours or small detail you can't afford to obscure with many coats of paint.

 

1.Undercoat skull white

2.Layer of red gore

3.layer of blood red

4.wash baal red/devlin mud liberally where you like some shading

5.more layer of blood red, applying the paint thinner as you approach the shading

 

6.paint all the black and other detail base colours

 

7.(6:2:1) Scorched brown, dark flesh, chaos black, water down and wash very carefully into the recesses (optional, for dark shading. Water it down a lot and mix it up on your pallet. You should be able to dip ur brush in the top of the paint puddle and rub on a paper towel with some of the white of the towel showing thru. Hard to describe the right consistency)

 

8. last layer of blood red, applying the paint thinner as you approach the shading

9. Paint on the rest of the detail as needed. Touch up the red sections after this if needed.

 

For highlighting red I:

 

Highlight and pick out lighter surfaces with (1:1) blood red + blazing orange on the

Thin highlights w/ (2:1) blazing orange + blood red

Edge w/ (3 or 4 :1) blazing orange + blood red

heres how i paint my blood angels.

 

Basecoat: White spray, paint armor blood red, parchment/skulls etc. bleached bone.

Wash: wash whole model devlan mud

Details: paint Purity seals ice blue, all other details black

Wash: wash blue asurman blue

Highlight: highlight black with codex grey.

 

simple, yet effective.

hey guys i just need a very quick and decent looking model that i can use the colors 1.) blood red, 2.) red gore, 3.) baal wash, 4.) badal black wash and chaos black also some boltgun metal any ideas? and also im using a white primer from the army painter that keeps on cracking when it dries?? and covering alot of detail any hints on how to fix this?
