netminder69
Hey all. New here. Finally decided to start looking into collecting Space Marines with the new codex. Have had my eye on the Minotaurs since IA 12 came out. However, I'm not sure what paint color to use for them. I know they are bronze (except for their vehicles which are a brown that I can't quite figure out yet) but I'm not sure what bronze to use. I tried to test paint a few and I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was. Now, one obvious choice would be to test with GW's Sycorax Bronze, but unfortunately the pot I bought was bad (it was lumpy and clumped up). So here are the marines I painted up, old models I had from when I first got into 40k and thought I would do a BA army. Sorry, images may be a bit big: 1. Done with Vallejo bronze. Seems too light and golden to me. Did it's left leg and arm with the Seraphim Sepia shade and the right with Nuln Oil just to see what may change with it. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/netminder69/2013-09-10225206.jpg 2. Formula P3 Molten Bronze. Seems too coppery to me. Also did left side in Seraphim and right in Nuln. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/netminder69/2013-09-10225228.jpg 3. And lastly, this was done with GW's Balthasar Gold. Not much difference from the P3 Molten Bronze. No shading on this one since it was so similar. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/netminder69/2013-09-10225242.jpg And if anyoen has any clue about the brown to use for vehicles, I would be forever indebted. Hopefully I can get a pot of viable Sycorax Bronze soon and give that a try too. Lorenzen
Hey, personally i use runelord brass as the major colour for my minotaurs, the full recipe is light layer of brass scorpion, light layer of runelord brass, drybrush runefang steel, wash with agrax earthshade, touch up with runelord brass and then edge highlights with runefang steel and a final glaze of druchi violet.. end result is this.. http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/244/5/2/asterion_moloc_by_typhion-d6kltcr.jpg if you wanted a slightly darker bronze colour id use warplock bronze as a base colour and work from there personally.. vehicle wise ill be doing mine the same way as the infantry, just with more control on the wash stages to avoid tide marks and pooling. netminder69
I suppose my fear of using metallics on the vehicles is that they'll look lik ebig metal bricks. Saw a pic of a Minotaurs force once and the vehicles looked like gold bars. :P But if you look at the images from the IA books, the marines are given the metallic shading on their pictures, but the vehicles are brown and not metallic. Thanks for the Scorpion/Runelord idea. I'll have to give it a whirl and see how it works out! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279968-which-color-is-best-for-minotaurs/#findComment-3456989 Share on other sites
chaplainmikey
Hi, I paint my Minotaurs in a different way to Lorenzen ( certainly not to his amazing standards though) and thought I'd give you my recipe, just because the more methods you have available to try thd more likely you are to find a method that suits you. :) Link- http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279234-mikeys-minotaurs/ I basecoat with Hashut Copper, wash with Agrax Earthshade, paint thinned Teclis Blue or Sotek Green into the crevices, layer with Sycorax Bronze and finish with a highlight of Runefang Steel. Hope I've been somewhat helpful and best of luck. Mike. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279968-which-color-is-best-for-minotaurs/#findComment-3457058 Share on other sites

Reading this is like reading the old GW How-to-paint guides lol 'A little brown here, some paint on the eyes and boom! Golden Demon quality model. netminder69
Thanks Mikey! Definitely somethign else to consider. In the ones I did I was surprised at how coppery the Balthasar Gold turned out. Now if I could find the right brown I'll be set!
