the lightning looks good, but i think the bones are a little "bright" and the chain on his backpack feels too long for me. nonetheless a fine addition to your mongrels

Wow, well that was a wall and a half of text! I'm glad I took the time to read it all. You should be proud of yourself MrBear. I enjoyed your style of writing. There were a few minor typos dotted through, but nothing that broke the immersion. How long have you been planning that piece?

Keep up the good work.

So, time for a few replies...

Great Story and great job on him also.

Thanks brother! It took some time to get the story right so glad you like it.

I see what you mean with the chain and bones. If I would start all over again I would probably shorten the chain a bit as, in retrospect, it's a tad too long. The bones are no brighter than any other in the army though so I guess it's a matter of the light when I took the photos. I'm glad you liked him and his background beside those detail though

Thanks Dallo! It wasn't meant to become such a wall of text but things kind of just happened when I sat down to write things down. I'll look it through and edit the typos, there are always a few that slips under the radar.

When it comes to the planning part... Well I wrote the big 'quotes' a couple of months ago and have been thinking about a rough 'storyline' now and then since then. Nothing was really written in stone though as I changed a few bits as I wrote it down these last couple of days, some things were just made up as I wrote them because they felt 'right'.

I had a few moments for a little 'hobby time' today so I did some experimenting...

Every warband worth the name could use a sorcerer, even if they are a bunch of fairly puritan Night Lords. I did get a few background ideas for this guy so he got moved up on my 'to do'-list...

Phenom work, buddy!

Hope you don't mind I copy pasted and made an ePub out of that so I can read it on my iPad.

Thanks Flint! Just copy away to your iPad as much as you want if it makes things easier for you

Oooh story time. I'm glad I took the time to read all this this morning, MrBear. The GF wanted attention so I couldn't reply, but I really enjoyed the immersiveness of the story. Thanks for taking the time and sharing it with us here.

Also, that Lord has come out really well. I don't mind the white mask at all, it suits the helmet that you've managed to make work so well for this mini.

About the sorcerer, that's an original staff and a good beginning. Curious about the result. :tu:

Cheers guys! I haven't had much time (or energy) to do much more work on this new fella but I have searched through my bits and have found a couple of things that could make him look a bit more like a sorcerer. They are not glued in place yet as I'm still thinking about a couple of other possibilities but they are quite likely additions to him:

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0388_zpslmcn0ph2.jpg

@deathspectersgt7:  I will do my best to live up to the expectations mate

@Wicced: Good suggestions! My bits box is a bit limited but I found this Dark Eldar knife and a scroll from the Empire flagellants that could work pretty well.

@Augustus: Thanks for the praise mate, glad you liked the story. It was a little experiment as I felt it was the best way to give some information on the Captain instead of trying to show things through his eyes, in this way things still remain a little bit uncertain and subject to interpretation.  You'd better keep giving your girlfriend the attention she wants though, they tend to become a little cranky when one spend to much time with the 'toy soldiers' :tongue.:

When it comes to the staff... It was the thing that started the whole idea of a sorcerer as I was looking through some old bits and found an old Chaos Marauder standard, The rest just happened.

@Atia: Thanks, I'll do my best to keep them coming!

@Grizzly_bear: Thanks! It's one of the best bits from the plastic Chaplain in my opinion, it would have been wrong for the captain but it feels right for this guy.

A lot of things to do at work at the moment so I'm afraid our new friend the sorcerer has to wait for more work until... sometime during the weekend at earliest.  But I got this idea to have something of a 'retro Wednesday' instead. While most of my old models are lost in the mists of time there are a few still left so I thought a couple of photos of those might be posted when progress is temporarily out of sight. Hopefully people can see that there has been some progress through the years aswell. :tongue.:

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0397_zpsicxnfbw6.jpg

First we have my converted Emperor's Champion from my old DIY chapter, made sometime in -01 if I remember things correctly. One of only a handful of models from that army that I still have left. Not the most splendid paintjob but he makes me feel a bit nostalgic anyway.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0395_zpssjzjwenn.jpg

I think it was in -05 I got the idea to build an IG army, there was an article in WD about 'Abhuman Doctrines' that (among other things) allowed you to field an army of 'Afriel strain' guardsmen and I gave it a go. I'm not a very fast painter though and after managing just about 20 models in a year I realised that it would take me forever to get a proper army done so I gave it up...

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0396_zpshtu4u2rq.jpg

Then in -06 I made my 'final' hobby attempt for a couple of years. For some reason I can't even remember, I decided that I would paint some Ultramarines. But by that time I had moved back home to the middle of nowhere and had absolutely no local hobby scene, which combined with adapting to working life, meant that I ran out of steam after 4 models. After that things were kind of 'in a coma' with perhaps 1 or 2 models painted until 3 years ago when I took up Fantasy again. After that? Well last year it was time for the Night Lords...

So no new guys 'in midnight clad' but a small trip down memory lane instead. :cool.:

After the busy weekend we're (kind of) back in the saddle again. I will have a ton of things to do at work which will make progress really, really slow for the next couple of weeks but I have at least started to paint the sorcerer. Not much to see yet but at least some proof that things are moving forwad...

In the words of Granny Weatherwax...

http://thehappylogophile.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/atent-dead.jpg

It's just that I've had loads and loads of things to do a work and little energy to devote to my small bunch of psychotic post-humans. Things have eased up a bit though and I've started to work on them again. There is not much painting progress to report even though I've done a few minor things on the sorcerer, there might be a little more to show in a couple of days but I won't promise anything...

I do have a couple of things to show though, I've been doing a little modelling today so the first members of Second Claw, a.k.a. 'The True-Blooded' have been put together.

They will have to wait a while for things such as names, backstories, trophies and paint though, I will concentrate on the sorcerer before I do much more with these guys. That's the plan atleast but I have never been very good with sticking with to plans when it comes to this hobby...

If you have any c&c it's always welcome of course

I said a week ago that I would concentrate on my sorcerer before I din anything else. Well, I kind of 'lied' when I wrote that... I got some unexpected inspiration and did something else instead:

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0425_zpsi9gzihkx.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0426_zpsqzbwei88.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0427_zps71itfbyt.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m101/The-Bear-in-the-North/SAM_0428_zpsholxfm76.jpg

Now, this doesn't mean that I've abandoned my Night Lords and taken 'seat IX on the Heresy Train' (30k is tempting but I'm sticking to the 41st millennium for now). It's just that I thought it could be fun to paint something different, the 'Mongrels' are still those closest to my heart.

C&C is always welcome of course. :smile.:

*carefully resheathes skinning knife after reading the last sentences*

'no, he didn't forsake the legion, he's just dabbling with other colors'

*listens to vox*

'no, i don't get it either, but i don't think it justifies a full boarding assault.'

*listening further while frowning and shaking his head*

'yes, recall all claws and return to overwatch status, but if the sorceror he promised us isn't here soon, there'll be a reckoning. '

sorry, had to get that out of my system:wink:

the red looks interesting, i have to try that on some midnight colored gloves...

They did not take the bait. All ambush claws stand down, we will have to find some other fools to walk into this trap...

The red is Khorne Red, Blood Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet, Evil Suns + Blazing Orange and Blazing Orange on it's own. And a few strategic washes of either Lahmian Medium + Baal Red or Lahmian Medium + Seraphim Sepia whenever I felt like it :biggrin.: . There are probably much easier ways to get the same effect but I was experimenting as I went along.

For Sanguinius!!!!!

For the Emperor and Sanguinius! (this one time :tongue.:) Death! DEATH!

And to increase the chance of my skin staying in one piece and soothing Wicced's concerns...

Obviously PLENTY of work left to be done but we are moving forward.

So here we go again... Whenever I do things they tend to take their own sweet time, more than two months now since I posted anything in this thread. There are reasons of course, there are always reasons and excuses...

Anyway, the sorceres is finished now! I'm still writing his background however so I won't show him for (probably) a couple of days yet unless tonights writing session really goes smooth, if so he might be posted sometime on friday. That's a big 'maybe' though so we'll see about that...

There's a small preview though as proof that things are done, an extreme close up of the skull on his staff :tongue.:

There will be more soon... :cool.:

The 33rd is BACK !!!!!

http://quotespics.com/wp-content/quote-images/yeah-baby-yeah.jpg

We're back and aim to stay active aswell! :cool.:

Cool looking sorcerer, but where is his head from?

Thanks brother! The head is the alternative head from the Reclusiam Command Squad Chaplain. It was too good not to use, so when I got the idea for a sorcerer it was rescued from my bits box. :smile.:

Oh, and I've pretty much finished the background for the sorcerer so I would say that there is a 95% chance of an update sometime this friday. I'm too tired (and intoxicated) to make a proper go at it tonight though. :tongue.:
