Mordian Blue/ Macragge Blue Help...

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am using Macragge Blue spray to paint my War Hounds Legion and it matches the old Mordian Blue exactly.

It is perfect!!

But it's running out, so I went and bought the supposed replacement colour Macragge Blue.

Well - what a shock - it's not even a close match!!!

Has anyone else found this?

What do you use instead?

I'm having a Hell of a time finding Mordian Blue to buy now so it's a bit of a problem.

Here's the picture I took today to show the difference.

Seems odd!!

Well, looking at your model, the new colour seems to be more mid-tone than highlight, but is otherwise the right sort of hue... So:

- Use the new paint

- Shade it a bit less

- Highlight a little more

- ???

- Profit

Alternatively, take a swatch of the colour you *want* to an automotive paints store, and see if they can make/match it for you. It'll probably be a better quality paint/primer to boot! :)

Mordian Blue's a lovely neutral blue with a slightly pastel hue (presumably due to the relatively heavy clay content of the Foundation series of paints), and I really like the slightly desaturated feeling this range creates.

Unfortunately, there's no exact replacement for Mordian Blue. Macragge Blue is close: I suspect it uses the same base hue but the tone is different. While that can be overcome by tinting it with a little white – or better, Space Wolf Grey/Fenrisian Grey – it's still a different consistency, which can be awkward.

Not an insurmountable change, but if you're unable to find Mordian Blue (I've scoured a lot of places, as I use it for the basis of my Ultramarines), tinting a pot of Macragge Blue may be the best choice.

Thanks for that!

That's a great help indeed!!
