Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters

I suppose my biggest fear comes the developer's back catalogue.  I watched a bit of Horus Heresy: Drop Assault on their YouTube channel, and it looks like the sort of thing that would be easy for them to adapt to the Grey Knights, with flashy symbols and so on.  However, if they're using the Chaos Gate title, I'd hope it's a lot more like the original game.

Either way, we'll hopefully find out in August.  Until then, I'm off to play the 'Armies of The Imperium' mod for XCom 2: WOTC.

"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment"

Forge Your Champions

Grey Knights are humanity’s greatest weapon. A secretive yet supremely powerful chapter of Space Marines sworn to eradicate corruption, these legendary Daemonhunters are dedicated to combating the minions of Chaos. Lead your own personalised squad against a galaxy-wide plot to infect worlds with a cosmic plague, The Bloom.

Plan Your Strategy
Master a turn-based tactical game full of satisfyingly strategic action. Choose powerful classes, wield incredible weapons, use environments to your advantage, and target specific enemy weak points to hinder the advance of an ever-evolving and mutating threat.

I'm worried that this will be some form of rubbish MOBA with preset characters and loadouts and zero RPG element, instead of the XP gaining, equipment changing permadeath that characterised the original Chaos Gate.

I can't see why you'd conclude that based on this blurb, to be honest. MOBAs aren't turn-based, for one thing, and there would be little point in resurrecting the Chaos Gate name if it weren't going to be stylistically similar.

"Personalised squad", "choose powerful classes", "use environments to your advantage" could all apply happily to XCOM, no? And "target specific enemy weak points" is a feature of Phoenix Point which is a game in the same vein.

I miss the belt fed storm bolters. Reminds me of the pewter models. They were more reasonably sized, and were belt fed. Not these stupid incredibly blocky things they have now, with the stubby magazine capacity of maybe 4 rounds lol.

Yeah I know this is OT a bit, but when it comes to grey knights, I literally can not get over their storm bolters.  They look absolutely terrible and ridiculous.

Maybe there's some new models coming someday that have good proportions and belt fed storm bolters?  I do like the GK appearance in art, but their models. . . hoo boy yikes.  They take the proportion issues of other old marines and magnify them somehow.

That's what a Moba is and the quote you used doesn't sound anything like that.

I never mentioned gameplay. My assumption was that MOBA's generally offer some predetermined characters with specific skills, e.g wizard, ranger, tank, etc, which you get to choose from who then potentially progress, as opposed to the original Chaos Gate where 80% of the available marines to user were generic nobodies who gradually levelled up and became specialised as you used them in-game.

A class system like X-COM would also be decent, where they start out with specialisms but then then grow down skill trees.

there would be little point in resurrecting the Chaos Gate name if it weren't going to be stylistically similar.

That's my fear. Turn based is one thing, but I'd hope it would keep the RPG elements such as levelling, permadeath, etc that defined the original game.

MOBAs basically have completely unique characters with bespoke abilities and statgrowth. But that can describe a ton of different rpg based character progression. Moba describes the actual gameplay surrounding the unit.

Yeah they bigged this trailer up waaay too much for a slow 1 minute cutscene, it might have worked as an announcement one but they already did that.

I mean especially as the perfect Terminator game trailer* already exists...

*I just wish the game was as consistent!

I understand that the warhammer board game itself is turn based.... And gw reeeally want to stay on brand... But turn based video games are just so lame.

I keep saying it every few years when games are announced. They really need to make a game like the old school mass effects, with a free roaming, planet hopping inquisitor.

Inquisitors make the most sense, because you can do far more varied story missions/arcs, and actually have access and eventually upgrade your way through all the types of armour and weapons and inquisitors can take pretty much all of it up to terminator armour. And can adjust your party members.

It'll never happen though.
