I'm very excited about the new defiler. Love the new model (and hated the old one). Being able to reliably overwatch on 4+ is a pretty potent deterrent to opponents.

I have yet to try it in my army, but I could see it fitting in well by swapping out maybe a vortex beast and a forge fiend.

Figured since the codex has been leaked and there's already a few youtube reviews on the book, a lot of the info is out in the ether and its time to have open discussion, reviews, tactics, etc.

I'll share my overall thoughts so far, and I'll admit, most of my views come from just reviewing the book and not having practiced everything on the table yet.
I think the book is good, not amazing, not horrible, its good. Subjective as it is, this is categorizing the rules not only in terms of power level, but fun factor, changes, ease of use and challenge, etc. Having said that, I would like to start with a quick tier list of detachments from best to worst(not including the grotmas one) IMHO:

1. Warpmeld pact
2. Warpforged Cabal
3. Rubricae Phalanx
4. Grand Coven
5. Changehost of Deceit

For now, I think the top 3 are pretty good and can easily swap around. I want to go over the Changehost first. Because this one bothers the heck out of me and I would love to be wrong and someone can point out something I have missed. Here we go....

Your typical new daemon ally detachment. But.....I think GW did us dirty on this one. I genuinely think that when the codex was made, one of the higher ups came down and said..."you have 1 day to add Tzeentch daemons in a detachment...go." I do jest a bit but....I am perplexed. Dragging over daemons and changing pretty much nothing except OC values and a couple rules....this is not a great recipe for success.

	Detachment rules:
Daemonic illusions is an Aura that gives nearby visable T.son psyker units a 4++ against ranged attacks. Sounds good at first. But then look at who can enjoy this. Pretty much rubric marines and tzaangor(or disc tzaangor) with an attached shaman. Not great. Most units already have ways or enjoy a better 4++. This has very little reach.

Mortal sorcery is the second part of the rule. Our daemons can cast cabal powers if T.son units are nearby. Who can do this? Only Kairos and a LoC. Can the daemons benefit from cabal abilities? no. What is this for? ....adding in 1 or 2 more psykers to cast cabal powers for T.sons units only. Or throw a doombolt out. Very underwhelming.

Enhancements - a lot of these also depends on pts.

Nethershriek mind-eater- T.sons or Loc. force a battleshock test on a unit at 12", if failed, 3 mortal wounds. Just ok.
Diabolic Savant- T.sons infantry only. If nearby daemons, +1 to channeling the warp cast only. Keep in mind this is ONLY when you channel for that extra dice and risk to roll double. Decent in a pinch. This can stack with something like the MVB.
Duplicitous Malediction- T.sons or LoC only. Re-deploy 3 T.son units after everyone has deployed. Not bad. I would rather have Ahriman(or both!), but...its an alternative.
Tome of True Names- T. Sons infantry only. Once per battle, for a single phase you get a 2++. Not bad, annoying and a good way to keep a foot character alive...but it is only for a foot character. Just ok.

Stratagems-
Sulphurous Veil (1cp) - minus 1 to hit for shoot or fight phase for any unit for that phase. - usable when being targeted, always good to see. Can help keep your meat shield horrors alive. Or big birds. Or anything really.
Deceptive Glamour (2cp) - start of fight phase a thousand sons unit in engagement range with enemy next to a daemon unit. The enemy must attack the daemons - sounds nice to deflect hit to the daemons but 2cp is a high cost for this. However....what if the enemy only charges the T.son unit and avoids the daemons?
Ethereal Phatasm(1cp) - enemy that that finished move within 9" of daemon unit, daemon unit can move d6. OR 6" if WHOLLY within range of T.sons unit. - A dodge move is nice, but to be WHOLLY within can be tricky. Will be very situational. Helps move the horror meat shield around nearby T.son unit.
Fractal Disjuntion (1cp) - Pick a non-monster daemon unit, cannot be targeted if over 18" away. - useful for horrors in the back holding objectives? Or screamers. This seem very situational since the detachment wants you to keep daemons near T.son units that may be too close to the action. But how often would a daemon unit be in this situation? Daemon units can use this have an 18" or less ranged attack anyway.
Chronoscorcerous Bleed (1cp) - T.son psyker unit or daemon unit, a unit charging this unit subtracts 2". - Good for halting a long charge. Not cumulative to similar rules.
Glimmershift Portal (1CP) - end of enemy fight phase you can have 2 non-monster daemon units or 1 monster unit not within 3" of enemy can but put in strategic reserve. Decent reposition move.

Daemons are largely unchanged from being moved over. One of the main bonuses for having daemons is that this is one of the only ways to generate extra CP for T.sons via Kairos. And there are a few movement shenanigans for controlling the table. Horrors are pretty cheap, but that's about it. There is little synergy between the daemons and T.sons. I feel like GW is afraid to make our big birds good at shooting and lack that extra power to be effective. The OC on pink horrors is 1 and Blue are 0. Making Blue pretty much useless at objectives. I feel like the enhancements and and some of the strats are the only good parts of this detachment. The army rule has very limited function. Perhaps if you have some tzaangor units with a shaman to enjoy a 4++ against ranged attacks but other detachments do Tzaangor better. Or a 4++ better. Same with rubrics. And as mentioned before, a lord of change or Kairos using cabal powers that can't be used on daemon units....I mean....ok? I am really not sure what GW was trying to do with this detachment. This is a contender for our worst detachment. And porting daemons over without adjusting rules/stats...you can't just plug and play like that with Tzeentch daemons. Frankly, any other detachment can do what you need a lot better. Play this if you really like daemons or want a way to get extra CP, or for fun. Why not.

I would fix this detachment by removing the "psyker" requirement for daemonic illusions. And have Mortal sorcery allow cabal abilities to work on daemons. If we are going to share, then share.

Please share thoughts, critique, add more about this detachment or others. There are plenty of positives about the other detachments. The new book is here(almost), let us have enjoy our new toys!

I think that this is permitted, but I don’t know all of the rules yet so I apologize if I’m posting something that I shouldn’t be.

if you are interested in picking up Magnus The Red’s Horus Heresy Character Series mini you can grab one for $80 on eBay from a seller called ‘The Deal Ninja’. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it is the real deal, not some sort of recast knock-off. I’m pretty sure that seller is a liquidator because they’ve got a ton of stuff on there for a lot cheaper than MSRP, including a fair amount of Warhammer stuff, though that stock is dwindling and they probably won’t get more as Warhammer is definitely not their main focus. I’ve bought a lot of it and it’s all been great, especially the really cool art prints like the one of the Chaos Space Marine painting that graces the cover of their 9th Edition Codex.

But yeah, Magnus for $80 is a lot better than the $155 that GW sells it for on their website. As of now that seller still has stock left although Magnus is the only Primarch that they have for sale, and only the Horus Heresy one and not the 40K Daemon Primarch - shame, because I want to add him to my collection, inappropriately-placed horns and all.

No, I am not in any way connected to that eBay seller nor do I get a single dime or anything at all from pointing people to them; I just thought that some of you would love to snag the model for almost less than half of what it would cost you if you bought it on GWs’ website. That’s a helluva deal, and I thought that there might be some of you here that would love to grab it for yourself at such a low price. As for me, now I’m thinking that I may turn the Saturnine launch box into a Thousand Sons army since I have their Primarch!

May the dice ever roll in your favor, as long as you’re not my opponent!

So, was doing a little Mathhammer on the Tzaangor Enlightened with bows and realized that if you can manage to get the full re-roll buff on a big unit, they can put out serious damage. With 30" Range, great movement and a reactionary move, it's not going to be too hard to keep these guys alive in your games and at only 80pts per 6 (assuming you can afford the $ to get 18 models) this is what their damage looks like against a big Knight.

54 Shots hitting on 4's with Lethal Hits will get you an average of 9 Lethals, but since you're only wounding on 6's anyway, you re-roll all the non-lethals fishing for more. That gives you 7.5 more Lethal hits, then rolling 6's to wound on the remaining 15 hits (from he 4's and 5's), that gives you 2.5 more for a total of 19 wounds at AP -2 D:2 Ignores Cover. That will put even the toughest vehicles on a 4+ save taking off 18-20 wounds on average. Even the biggest Knights only have around 24 wounds, so it shouldn't be that hard to finish the job with a Doombolt, some grenades, a little fire from elsewhere, ect. And if your target doesn't have a 4+ invul, you can put the AP spell into them as well for even more damage.

That's 240 points of Tzaangor Enlightened with 1 spell buff taking out most or all of a 400+ point titanic unit in a single attack.

Edit: So just realized I messed up the math, it's the melee ones that have three attacks, not the ranged ones which only have 2, so it's be more like 12-14 damage to a big unit, which is less impressive, but still not bad. Especially considering that these are also solid against MEQ units and and cheap enough to run around doing actions and screening things if needed too. I still think they're really strong, just a little less strong than I thought.

I just read through the leaks and it seems to me we lost access to chaff units. Cultist are gone which is very sad and I think Tzaangors got changed to the worse or at least their role changed.

They lost battleline, -1 OC, lost their AP on Tzaangor blades, lost access to 5+FNP through their shaman. They got scout 6 and their ability changed to remove from battlefield in enemy turn into strategic reserve.

They got a massive price hike even if they got worse. They cost now for 10/20 models 70/160 points from the 65/120 points they were until now. A big unit of 20 costs 40 points more in an already very pricy army and way to much for a chaff unit that dies very fast.

I think their role now is holding/fulfilling objectives and redeploying but don't know how effective at that they are now.

Just skimed the mutant detachment and I was very underwhelmed. Getting d3 wounds for a meagre bonus doesn't seem good. Same with the new ability of the shaman.

	What are your thoughts?

I want to start and say that I like our codex very much. I think it´s a fun codex with lot of deaphts in it. But I do think it´s a little bit sad that we have so few options. We could really need more units to use. but my questions to you are, what do we need and would be intersting to use? Here is some of my suggestions:

	1. A pure flyer. Chaos don´t have one and it would be fun to have one, specially for Thousand sons.

	2. A unique heavy option. Some thing like a"silver tower. Perhaps looking similiar to a obelix with a nice good cannon etc.

	3. A close combat unit. Pure close combat, perhaps some kind of terminators or something similiar.

	4. A tzaangor war machine of some kind. Pure 40k, not fantasy one.

Now we know what new unit we're getting in 10th edition, I'm making this thread so we can speculate on Next Edition's content for us without obstructing the 10th Edition Thread and 10th Ed Detachment predictions.

To start us off, I'll post this wishlist:

		Rubric Havocs
Probably not actually named Rubric Havocs, but as the main "Shooty CSM" it seems weird we don't have a dedicated "Heavy Weapons Infantry" unit. Sure, all Rubric units can carry a Soulreaper, but there's more options than that for a proper heavy weapon squad to use such as Missile Launchers since we only have 1 source of Anti-Vehicle in the whole army.

		Khenetai Occult
The TSons Assault Squad from HH. Probably would be reimagined somewhat in a move to 40k, but the idea of a Slow but Tanky Assault Squad is an idea that already has a functional presence in 40k (see: All Melee Deathguard). A Marine tier Melee threat is something our army lacks, even tho any version we get probably wouldn't be Battleline to maintain our "Shooty CSM" status.

		Ammitara Occult
This is a Scout/Sniper unit. Obv Scout Armour wouldn't work for our dusty bois, but it could be reimagined as a unit of Sorcerers using their Psychic power to enhance their Sniper shots (or we get floating Scout Breastplates with Sniper Rifles which would be very funny).

		Rubric Praetor
A non-psyker character for TSons is an odd choice, but having a Chaos Lord Equivalent in the army would be a neat force multiplier and would be a decent chassis to get some variant of the old "All is Dust" rule back into the army in the form of an attached unit buff.

		Numerologist
TSons Technomancer. Probably a bit less useful now that we're probably losing our Tanks (<- delete if this doesn't happen), tho Land Raiders, Rhinos and those Robots would all benefit from a Techmarine analogue.

A dedicated Thousand Sons Terminator Character
Basically a Termie Sorc variant that's not just the alt. build of a CSM unit. In terms of what to do to make them different, the existing Termie Sorc is an Anti-Vehicle character (the only source of that keyword in our army) so maybe a more Anti-Infantry character would be appropriate?

		Non-Tzaangor Unique Cultists
Yep, it's this again. Ideally some kind of Psychic Cultist unit so they can be used with our army rule.

If you have any comments on the above, or want to post a wishlist of your own, go ahead.
Hopefully we can manifest a proper wave for 11th.

Things have been fairly quite for us as far as anything new this edition, figured we could do with a bit of discussion on the latest from GW.

What do folks think of the detachment, good, bad, ugly, neutral? Generally I have seen a lot of neutral to negative reactions to it so far but those are just first impressions. Do we see this as a contender for the cult of magic or better left to collect dust in the detachment tool box?

The New MFM has dropped and it has a whole bunch of nerfs for Thousand Sons:

Personally I think a lot of these are pointless, as the power in the list, and thing that makes these all strong is doombolt. I think a lot of the stuff that was raised was about the right points, and all the other stuff was overcosted, so we should really have seen drops elsewhere, like 10pts off the brute, maulerfiend, predators, 20 off the vindi etc.

	5 rubes+sorc+icon+1CaP+soulreaper for 110 feels about right.

90 for another 5 bolter dudes doesn't feel right, and they should allow 2 reapers, or I think drop this to +80, so a 10 man unit is 190.

So I've been a bit more enthusiastic about 10th ed recently, nd have enjoyed getting my old favourites the Thousand Sons onto the table, however it feels we're lacking some of the tools other forces have to deal with vehicles, and it also feels like Magnus is the key to the whole army - without him it just feels...lacking power? And almost the same with the mutalith.

	2000pts with magnus.

Exalted sorc, disc, forbidden lore - flies about and doombolts

	infernal - vortex

	infernal

	Magnus

TS Sorc - goes with 1 rubric unit to hold home objective.

	Sorc in TDA - crystal

4x5 rubrics, one with all flamers, others are 3x bolters, reaper, all have icons.

	1x mutalith

	10 Scarabs

It feels really weird to have over a thousand points in characters, however it feels like these ones are needed to do objectives and make units shine, as well as pumping up the numbers of Cabal points - I wish icons gave bonus cap again.

Here's my option with no magnus:

	Ahriman

	Exalted on foot

exalted on disc - forbidden lore

	infernal

	infernal

	sorcerer

	TDA sorcerer - crystal

	5 rubrics, flamers

	10 rubrics, soulreaper

	2x 5 rubrics,

	1x10 scarabs

	1x vortex

	2x2 spawn.

Bit more of a random list, I unfortunately don't own the 3 MVB's that people seem to be taking. How will this fare with 10th/paraih nexus?

I'm a huge fan of marks/symbols/squad markings on my models. I generally don't have an issue settling on what I want and finding the lore to coincide with what I want to do. When it comes to Thousand sons, even after many years I find myself "stuck" in this regard. What do you guys do and think about your thrallband choice and what to mark on the right shoulder pad of your army?

When I started, t.sons were simple enough. You had the classic ouroboros symbol and the mark of tzeentch. Ouroboros on the left shoulder pad, and mark of tzeentch on the right. Since The release of wrath of Magnus GW has presented us with unique thrallbands and cults. You got:

Thralls of magnus

	Blades of magnus

	Brotherhood of dust
And so on.....

Then you have your 9 cults, from which each thrallband tends to align.

As far as the right shoulder pad goes, it is not 100% clear what goes here. But it appears to be the space for the thrallband mark. And what I mean by not clear is that arguably you could put the cult mark here too. GW likes to pick a "primary" sub-sect faction for each army as the poster-boy. For space marines, you of course have ultramarines, necrons would be the silent king, etc. Simply looking at the models GW painted for their display models, the thrallband they chose was the Thralls of Magnus with that yellow eye symbol. Their biggest note being the largest and most powerful of the cult of scheming. And arguably, the primary faction or rather....thrallband to boast the classic gold and blue paint job that thousand sons have always been known for.

Now, funnily if you google or look at the illustrated newer artwork for Thousand sons you will find that most(not all) show the classic Ouroboros on both shoulder pads. I don't personally put a lot of weight into any meaning to this as I simply think the artists probably were not aware of the concept of thrallbands at the time. But it is interesting to note.

That being said, I am a stickler for making lore accurate iconography, and I simply cannot settle on what to slap on the right shoulder pad for my army. I am without a doubt sticking with the classic blue and gold scheme but I also don't feel comfortable using the thralls of magnus eye symbol presented on the box art. And I would prefer to choose the "primary" subfaction for the legion, but this is not made abundantly clear.

What do you guys think?

Side note: Since it is clear we are our own unique chaos faction, I don't understand why it is taking GW so long to make our own legion transfer sheet, which would include many sorcerous symbols, marks for tabards, marks of tzeentch, thrallband marks and cult marks.

Had a great game against Death guard a week ago. Ended in a 100point tie. Crazy!!!

We had the mission where you get 5 points for holding, 5 points for holding more and 5 points for killing plus 5 points for killing more.

Secondary was the one with 3 cards rather than 2.

	(Hence the high scoring).

	My list was:

	Magnus

	Ahriman

Two Infernal Masters. (one with rubrics, one just on his own). one had umbralific crystal and one had Arcane Vortex

	DP with wings

3X rubrics with flamers and soul reaper cannon

	2X rhinos

	2X forgefiends with Ectoplasma cannons

	1 Maulerfiend

	1 Mutalith Vortex Beast

I put the squad of rubrics with the two infernal masters in a rhino to double screamer invocation. Overall that worked quite well. The DP generally disappoints me, but this game he was able to deepstrike in for behind enemy lines along with the rubrics and infernal master with the crystal. They were also able to take the objective from my opponent in his deployment zone when they did it.

The Maulerfiend was a dissapointment for the second game in a row. I'm thinking of dropping him in favour of a second vortex beast. Just need to Juggle to find the extra 10 points.

Magnus and the Vortex Beast as always were awesome. I got a little too aggressive with Magnus and he died by the end of round 2, but he took a bunch of points and took out several enemy units before he went. (maybe not his full points value, but definitely his tactical value before he died.)

Apropos of nothing, I stumbled over a couple of 'true-scale' Thousand Sons that I made a while back for @Commissar Molotov's The War in the Eye project.

I never got round to painting them at the time, but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Tzeentch (my abortive Chaos Army in 2nd edition consisted of nine Thousand Sons, a Lord of Change and a pile of Horrors), and thought I might work them up. I don't imagine they'll ever be a proper army, but perhaps I might make a Kill Team one day.

The conversion work is relatively simple apart from the torso, which is covered step-by-step here, if you'd like to have a go. Other than that, we've got Rubric shoulder pads, backpack, boltgun and head along with Primaris/Mark III arms. The legs are provided by Scarab Occult Terminators.

As you can see, this gives them a bit more presence – and together with their ceremonial headdresses, they're quite imposing!

Any thoughts on colour scheme? Can't decide whether to go retro, blue-and-yellow, red-and-gold, or something entirely different.

Hi there Sorcerers. Looking for any info on what types of weapons, if any, the Thousand Sons favored or disliked during the days of the GC/HH? Also if they used a particular mark of armour more than others? Lastly were there any vehicles they had a preference for or against?
