HIDING AND UNHIDING CATEGORIES

One of the things that you can do to make your browsing easier is to hide categories that you do not visit. Categories can be unhidden if you ever want to visit the forums therein. Hiding a category won't prevent you from following a link to that forum.

Note that you cannot do this when using the Mobile skin, so this tutorial is only presented using the Carbon/Default/Full skin/theme.

For example, here's what the site looks like normally:

(click the image for a larger version)

For our example, we'll hide the Horus Heresy category. If you want to hide a category, the first step is hold your mouse over the "-" that appears at the far right of the category header, as below.

(click the image for a larger version)

When the mouse is positioned over the correct spot, the "-" icon will be backlit in white. A small text box saying "toggle this category" will appear.

If you click the toggle icon, the category will be hidden.

(click the image for a larger version)

The hidden category header will still show, but it will be faded and all of the forums within will be hidden, allowing you to more easily scroll past any categories you don't visit regularly.

If you want a hidden category to show, simply move the mouse over the "-" at the far right end of the header to see the toggle icon.

(click the image for a larger version)

As before, a text box will appear giving you the option to toggle the hidden category. If you click the icon, the hidden category will reappear with all of its forums.

(click the image for a larger version)

You can hide as many categories as you want.

One of the most powerful features available to you for sharing your hobby-related content at the Bolter & Chainsword is the Blogs feature, especially when combined with the image-hosting capabilities provided by the Gallery feature (see this tutorial). By creating blogs (you may create any number of blogs), you can document projects and present your thoughts on the hobby, with comments enabling other members of the community to discuss your entries. Projects can range from things like assembling and painting a single miniature, assembling and painting a full force, developing a DIY Chapter, building a gaming table, writing fan fiction, creating an alternate history setting, etc. - just about any kind of Warhammer 40,000-related project that you can imagine.

Blogs also provide you with a high degree of control over the organization of your projects. There are standardized categories that roughly equate to various discussion forum categories (facilitating content curation and announcements), but blog creators can create custom categories within their blogs. In addition, blog creators can change both the main blog category (the standard categories) and the blog entry categories (the custom categories created for entries) at any time, allowing reorganization as projects grow and develop. Creators can also edit blog entry titles and select the sorting method for those titles, enabling control over how those entries appear to viewers. Blogs are also easy to find simply by opening up the Blogs tab on a member's profile page - no matter what the subject matter and categorization (including blogs that are created within clubs), all of a member's blogs can be found in one place.

Members will also find that creating blogs and composing blog entries is very easy, being virtually identical to creating topics and comment replies in the discussion Forums.

Several of the Bolter & Chainsword editing tools allow you to customize colors. These include Text Color, Background Color, Header, and Half Header. The Bolter & Chainsword uses HEX color codes for color selection. Users may be familiar with other color coding methods such as color names, RGB color values, HSL, HSLA, and CMYK. None of those methods will work for editing content at the Bolter & Chainsword - the editing tools that are custom to the site only allow users to specify colors using HEX color codes. The editing tools that are part of the standard package allow users to select from a range of colors, but also allow users to specify other colors using HEX color codes.

If you want to see basic primers on the other methods, click the links below.

If you prefer any of the above methods and want to convert them into HEX, there is a converter at W3 Schools (https://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_converter.asp).

If you want to see a basic primer on the hexadecimal numbering system, open the spoiler.

 Spoiler

The numbering system we commonly use is the decimal, or base 10. In this system, each position has a value from 0-9 (ten values, ten character options); the value on the far right represents the number of ones, the value to the left of that represents the number of tens, the value to the left of that represents the number of hundreds (tens X tens), the value to the left of that represents the number of thousands (tens X tens X tens), and so on. Basically, the value of each position is equal to 10P-1, where P starts at 1 for the position on the far right and increases by 1 at each step to the left (many of you will remember how that works from algebra/mathematics). While we normally omit the indicator for the numbering system base, it would be technically correct to show five hundred eighty-three as 58310. (the subscripted "10" tells us that this is 583 in the decimal/base 10 system).

Hexadecimal is a base 16 system, each position having one of sixteen different values. Since we only have ten number characters (0-9), we use letters for the additional characters (A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, and F=15). The value of each position is equal to 16P-1, where P starts at 1 for the position on the far right and increases by 1 at each step to the left. If you see 58316, that's equivalent to 1,41110. (whereas the equivalent of 58310 in hexadecimal is 24716).

The subscripted numbers tell us which number system is represented. So 1510 means fifteen in the decimal system whereas 1516 means 15 in the hexadecimal system (which equates to 21 in the decimal system). 1516≠ 1510 (1516 = 2110)

The value of using a code to represent a color is that the exact color can be specified. Where "blue" might be open to interpretation, 18ABCC gives us an exact color that is close to Thousand Sons Blue. The value of hexadecimal over decimal is that the former only takes two characters to represent a color value that would require three in the latter, with a complete HEX string needing only 6 characters versus the 9 that would be necessary if using a decimal string. The HEX coding allows us to represent any one of 16,777,216 (2563) colors using only six characters.

When you enter HEX color codes, you'll enter a 6-character (or 3-character, more on that later) string. This string represents each of the values for red, green, and blue (RGB), each ranging in value from 0016 to FF16 (which equates to 010-25510). Just as the 10 is not shown in "normal" numbering because it is understood that we're using a base 10 system, HEX values are understood to be hexadecimal, so the 16 is omitted. The HEX codes are really three separate values, the first two characters representing the amount of red, the second two characters representing the amount of green, and the last two characters representing the amount of blue: RRGGBB. The six-character HEX string is usually entered with the pound sign/hashtag (#) at the front (i.e., #RRGGBB), but the site software automatically adds the hashtag so you only have to enter the six hexadecimal characters.

So a HEX value of 20552B (something close to Waaagh! Flesh) is not the same as 20552B16. Where 20552B16 is equivalent to 2,118,95510, the HEX value would be broken down as 20552B, or red: 2016, green: 5516, blue: 2B16. Those values correspond to red: 3210, green: 8510, blue: 4310.

You will normally see color selection tools depicted as a two-dimensional rectangle, as in Microsoft Paint:

...or that which is available if you use either the Text Color or Background Color formatting tools:

The default colors in the color selector shown above are "web safe" colors, but you are free to use the HEX cell (the black box above the Clear button) to choose any color by entering its HEX value.

Many color selection tools offer one or more cells for entering values, either one cell for each color or a single cell for all three colors. Often, color editing tools that have cells for each individual color allow users to enter the decimal value for each color (i.e., the values you might use if using the RGB method mentioned above), with the editor then converting each of those into their hexadecimal equivalents and combining them for the HEX color entry, as in Microsoft Paint (see above) and other Microsoft products (see below):

The Header and Half Header formatting buttons, which are custom buttons, present a cell for members to specify the HEX color of the [half] header fill color:

Alternatively, you may be familiar with the traditional color wheel and many online tools using that wheel (see links below):

While online tools show two-dimensional rectangles or circles (since monitors/displays only work in two dimensions), it may be more useful to imagine HEX color selection as a [three-dimensional] cube:

Each of the corners of the cube represents some combination of no value (00) or pure value (FF) for red, green, and blue.

The point where all three colors are 00 is black.

The point where all three colors are FF is white.

White and black are opposite and are "connected" by a string of "grays" where all three colors have identical values (e.g., 555555, 6B6B6B).

The point where red is pure (FF) and both green and blue have no value (00) is pure red (FF0000).

The point where green is pure (FF) and both red and blue have no value (00) is pure green (00FF00).

The point where blue is pure (FF) and both red and green have no value (00) is pure blue (0000FF).

The point where red and green are pure (FF) and blue has no value (00) is pure yellow (FFFF00).

The point where red and blue are pure (FF) and green has no value (00) is pure magenta (FF00FF).

The point where green and blue are pure (FF) and red has no value (00) is pure cyan (00FFFF).

The opposite of pure red (FF0000) is pure cyan (00FFFF).

The opposite of pure green (00FF00) is pure magenta (FF00FF).

The opposite of pure blue (0000FF) is pure yellow (FFFF00).

Pure cyan, pure magenta, and pure yellow are combined with black (key) to form an alternate subtractive color system called CMYK (only mentioned here as trivia).

You can envision any HEX color code as telling a computer how to display a color based on its relative position within the cube, the first two characters indicating the color's relative position along the red axis, the second two characters indicating the color's relative position along the green axis, and the last two characters indicating the color's relative position along the blue axis.

For example, the image below shows the HEX color code EDC184 telling the software to move ED16 (23710≈ 93%) along the red axis, then C116 (19310 ≈ 76%) along the green axis, then 8416 (13210 ≈ 52%) along the blue axis, displaying a color that approximates Eldar Flesh.

It is important to note that color "mixing" via the HEX codes does not follow traditional color wheel concepts (you can see excellent examples at canva.com (https://www.canva.com/colors/color-wheel/) and figma.com (https://www.figma.com/color-wheel/). For example, traditional color theory doesn't mix red and green to create yellow, as occurs in HEX.

I previously mentioned that HEX colors can also be entered as 3-character strings. This only works when the red value has the same two characters AND the green value has the same two characters AND the blue value has the same two characters, though the characters used for each color don't need to be the same. For example, HEX FF88AA is functionally equivalent to F8A. You can't shorten a 6-character HEX string to 3-characters if only one or two of the color values have double-characters - all three of the colors must have values with the same character in both spaces.

Most software doesn't care about case (upper or lower) when entering HEX codes, so you could enter EDC184 or edc184 (Eldar Flesh, shown above) and achieve the same outcome.

	IMPORTANT!!!

If you enter a six-character string based on decimal results, the computer will not give you what you expect. For example, we have established that HEX 20552B will give you something approximating Waaagh! Flesh. If you were to enter the decimal values 2016=3210, 5516=8510, and 2B16=4310, so 328543, you would get something looking like this result. The results in that example are actually fairly close, but it's possible to get drastically different results.

	IMPORTANT!!!

Whether you affect the color of the text or the background, having sufficient contrast between the text color and the background color is important for readability. It is important to remember that both the default text color and default background color are determined by the theme you are using, and that different members use different themes. While the Header and Half Header formats automatically change the text to white (FFF), the Text Color and Background Color formats only affect the text or background, leaving the other as the default color. When you apply either of those formatting options, it is important to consider how the content will look to members using both themes. For example, if I am composing this while viewing the site on the Carbon (dark) theme and I change the text in the parenthesis below to yellow (FF0), it will look fine. To members that view the site on the Mobile (light) theme, however, the words will be difficult to read.

	(How does this look?)

Conversely, if I'm viewing the site on the Mobile (light) theme and I change the text in the parenthesis below to black, it will look fine. To members that view the site on the Carbon (dark) theme, however, the words will be difficult to read.

	(How does this look?)

The above principles apply to other colors. When formatting either text or background color, it is often prudent to also format the other to ensure that the content can be read regardless of the theme that the viewer is using. If you're willing to put in the work, you can also change themes while you're composing or try your formatting with the opposite text/background color. The Default/Mobile theme uses purplish-gray text (56425C) on a white background (FFF); the Carbon theme uses light gray text (BFBFBF) on a dark gray background (1C1C1C). Using bold text is also a good way to improve contrast when formatting colors.

The Warhammer 40,000 hobby, like the larger tabletop miniature wargaming hobby, is an extremely visual hobby. While discussion is a core element of the Bolter & Chainsword community, images enrich the discussion. Whether showing off our miniatures, sharing fantastic artwork, or providing useful charts, diagrams, and maps, images are an integral part of the engagement that occurs within the community. While members are free to use any image-hosting solution they desire, the B&C’s Gallery feature provides our members with free storage for the sharing of images in other content.

The site software automatically creates an avatar for you based on a random (?) color and the first character in your display name. Many members like to select their own avatar, however, and that is one of the key methods by which members can personalize their account and create visual identity within the community.

There are two methods for customizing your avatar. The first, shown here, is to use an image in your B&C albums. The second, which can be seen if you click the "Next Page" button that appears at the top and bottom of this article, is to use an image from your device.

B&C albums are free and easy to create. When you use an image in the galleries, the file size can be much larger than if you use an image from your device.

For this tutorial, I will change my avatar twice; first changing the avatar to an image in another member's gallery, then changing it back to my standard avatar.

First, you need to have an image that is online. Personally, I recommend using your own gallery here at the B&C, which you can create for free. You can use any online image, however, including those in albums that aren't yours (but it is a best practice to not use someone else's image without their permission).

For my first example, I'll be using this image, which can be found in an album that belongs to @Cris R. If you're looking at the image in the album, it will probably look something like this:

When you mouseover the image display area, however, you'll see the Image Tools button appear in the bottom right corner of that area:

 1. Click on the dropdown arrow to see the image tools dialog box appear:

 2. Click on "Set as" to see another dialog box appear:

 3. Click on "Set as my profile photo" to select the image as your avatar/profile photo:

That's it - 3 clicks (not counting getting to the image in the first place).

You'll see the image appear in the upper left corner of the main screen next to your display name. If you want to see it larger, however, all you have to do is open your profile page:

The site software automatically creates an avatar for you based on a random (?) color and the first character in your display name. Many members like to select their own avatar, however, and that is one of the key methods by which members can personalize their account and create visual identity within the community.

There are two methods for customizing your avatar. One method, shown here, is to use an image from your device. The other method, which can be seen if you click the "Previous Page" button that appears at the top and bottom of this article, is to use an image in your B&C albums.

Note that this method limits the size of your image to 102 Kb, so if you want to use a larger image, you'll want to use an image in your gallery.

First, open your profile page. Click on the image icon that appears at the lower left corner of your current profile picture/avatar.

This will open the Profile Photo dialog box.

Click the Choose Single File button.

Find the image file that you want on your device and save/select it. If the image file size is too large, you'll get an error message.

Once you successfully select an image of the appropriate size, you'll be returned to the Profile Photo dialog box with your selected image showing.

This topic provides information on how to use all of the BBCodes available at the Bolter & Chainsword.

Each post starts with a link back to this index, followed by the name of the BBCode in large text. This is followed by a brief description of how the BBCode works and provides formatting. An example is then shown first in code, then the result in a post. On occasion, multiple examples are provided. Relevant notes are provided. In some cases, examples of advanced uses are provided, first as code and then the actual appearance in a post.

Immediately below the example in the code box will be the exact same BBCode, activated (i.e., not in a code box). This is how the code in the box above will actually appear when the software applies the BBCode formatting.

If there are any relevant notes, they will appear in italics after the examples. This may include bugs or notes when BBCodes aren't functioning.

Examples of advanced usages may appear below notes and basic examples. In cases where BBCodes are used relative to other elements of a post, lorem ipsum text will appear to represent the other content. Examples of this include the clearfloat and left/right sidebars.

Invision has indicated that support for BBCodes will be discontinued at some time in the future.

The software does not preserve the BBCode in your content. Instead, when you hit the "Submit" button, the software formats the content using the BBCodes. If you go back in to edit the content, you will not see the BBCode (though you can use BBCode in your edits).

When the formatting toolbar is working, entering an emoji into your content is fairly easy. However, another method to enter an emoji into your content is to enter the emoji name, and the best practice is to just enter the start of the emoji name and then select the emoji from the dialog box that appears below. If you enter the closing colon, the dialog box will appear (the software is supposed to convert the text string into the emoji, but that doesn't always happen).

Here's a cheat sheet showing all of the available emojis and their names (the emoji appears above its name). Simply click on the image to see a larger version.

Membership within the Bolter & Chainsword community is always voluntary, and members are free to request deletion of their account at any time per our Terms of Use. Account deletion will be executed in compliance with U.S. privacy laws, the California Consumer Privacy Act, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (pdf of the actual regulation), and the U.K. Right to Erasure, and as supported by the Invision software upon which the site runs. If you live in an area with different/more stringent digital privacy laws, please provide us with a link to those laws when you submit your request for account deletion so that we can ensure that we meet them. Our intent is to fully protect the digital privacy of all members, including those who desire account deletion, to the fullest ethical, moral, and legal extent.

Requests for account deletion will be approved and the process of account deletion will be initiated without any questions or delay. The process for account deletion includes a 30-day waiting period. This waiting period is a protection for members, mitigating the risk of someone else accessing your account and making a bogus request for account deletion. This period also allows for the identification and removal of PII in content that you have submitted. Members that are in the 30-day waiting period for account deletion will be identified by being moved into the + RENUNCIATUS + user group with the associated icon.

If you did not submit a request for account deletion and see that you are in that group and notice that icon below your profile picture, please contact the Administrators immediately so that we can cease the countdown and restore you to your correct user group.

Account deletion is permanent and irrevocable, so members should consider the matter very carefully before submitting any request for account deletion.

	* The only exception to this is that members that are permanently banned for misbehavior will not be allowed to delete their accounts. This allows us to maintain records of their misbehavior in case they [attempt to] return to the site under a new identity. Once you click the email link confirming the request for deletion of your account, the request will be delivered into a queue for Administrator action. Note that the Administrators do not receive any type of notification that an account deletion request has been made, so the time it takes us to approve your request will depend upon when we notice the request. If you would like to expedite this process, please contact the Administrators via PM or email.

	9. Once your account deletion request has been approved, you will be moved to the Renunciatus group for a 30-day period. During this time, you may contact the Administrators if you change your mind or if the request was bogus (i.e., someone else accessed your account and made the request without your consent). At the end of the 30-day period, assuming you do not cancel the deletion request, your account will be deleted, removing all PII associated with the account from the database.

The Bolter & Chainsword runs on Invision software, and that software records certain personally identifiable information (PII) on each member. This information is not something that we can choose by settings [as far as I can tell]. This information is only accessible by members of the Administratum, Sacristan, and Testing groups. The members of the Administratum are the site administrators - the site owner and one or more other members who make the policy decisions for the site and perform actions to maintain the site and serve the members (e.g., creating/moving/deleting forums, approving accounts, etc.). The members of the Sacristan group perform technical functions to maintain the site (e.g., updating software, updating skins/themes, repairing the database, etc.). The members of the Testing group test various functions when we update things.

Each member also has access to a report on the PII that the system records on them.

The system tracks the following PII on each member:

	Name (i.e., your Display Name)

	Email [address]

Joined (i.e., the date you registered your account at the B&C)

	IP Address

	Time Zone

	Last Visit

	Last Post

Birthday (only if you enter a date)

Whether or not you allow admin emails ("0" for No, "1" for Yes)

	Known IP Addresses

	Browser(s)

Last Seen (which I think is identical to Last Visit, but it's listed separately)

If you identify content that you think is problematic, the best thing to do is to submit a Report. By doing so, all staff members assigned to that content area will be able to review the content, discuss any issues with that content, and then take appropriate action.

To submit a Report about content, find the three ellipses that appear near that content. The images below use posts in the discussion forums, but other site functions (e.g., Clubs, Blogs, etc.) have a similar process. If you click on the three ellipses, a drop-down menu will appear:

Simply select "Report" from that menu and the Report form will appear:

While entering a message with the report is optional, we request that you include a message that explains the issue(s) you see with the content. Sometimes things are obvious to you, but they are not obvious to us. If you don't include a message explaining the problem, we may ignore the report unless something stands out to us.

It's important to note that the messages you submit with a report are subject to the same community standards as any other content you post at the site. Calling members names, using profanity, and other behaviors that are not allowed at the site are not allowed in reports.

Once a report is submitted, all staff members that have authority over that content (i.e., any Moderati assigned to the location in which the content was posted and all Administratum members) will review the report, discuss the issues, and determine if any action needs to be taken. This doesn't always happen quickly, however, as we don't want to rush into action without giving the issue due consideration.

The full range of options is available to us when dealing with problematic content. The two most likely outcomes that you may notice will be that content is edited or it is removed. If we determine that disciplinary action beyond editing/hiding is necessary, we will typically resolve that in private with the member that posted the content. Sometimes, however, we determine that no action is necessary. If you have questions about how a report was resolved, you are welcome to contact the moderators assigned to the location in which the content was posted, or you may contact the administrators. We will be happy to explain our determination (though disciplinary action on other members will generally be kept confidential).

The Report tool can also be used for other purposes. For example, we occasionally close discussions temporarily with the option to re-open them later. This is most often done with rumor discussions. In those instances, we will ask members that have updated information on the subject to report the topic so that they can inform us of the new information, at which point we can re-open the discussion.

The tags system provides viewers of the Bolter & Chainsword with a very powerful tool for searching site content. This system drives the “similar topics” functionality, but extends to other content such as images and downloads. Simply by clicking on a tag, a member will quickly be provided with other site content that has the same tag.

The key is that the same tags must be used in order for the tag functionality to work effectively.

We’ve been observing the use of tags and developing a system for use here at the Bolter & Chainsword. Many members have used the tags system as a method of expanding upon the topic title. Alternately, many members have simply ignored the tag system as they are unaware of the value in the system. The most widespread problem, however, is that similar topics have been given different tags for the same thing (e.g., Space Wolves, spacewolves, Space Wolves Chapter, Vlka Fenryka, etc.). We need to correct these problems.

In order for the tag system to be used to best effect, some level of standardization is necessary. This system will drive the “correct” tags to use with content in order to optimize searching. The dynamic and extensive nature of the Warhammer 40,000 game in terms of both rules and lore means that we needs a flexible system of guidelines (rather than a fixed set of tags). We also expect that any tag guidelines we develop are subject to change in order to better accommodate hobbyists’ needs and as our community understanding of the tags system grows.

So here are guidelines to using the tags to best effect:

Topics about an organization (e.g., Adeptus Astartes Chapter, Adepta Sororitas Order) should have the tag for the organization name, including the organization type. So a topic about the Exorcists Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes should have the tag "Exorcists Chapter" applied. This will reduce confusion and duplicate usage (simply using "Exorcists" might bring up topics about the Adepta Sororitas tank).

Topics about Successors are different from topics about predecessors, so use the “Successors” term in tags when appropriate. For example, an Ultramarines Successor should use the tag “Ultramarines Successor” rather than “Ultramarines Chapter”. Practically speaking, a tag indicating that a Chapter is a Successor should only be used when the relationship with the predecessor really matters.

Topics about individuals should use both first and last name, where known. If individuals also have specific ranks, those ranks should also be applied as separate tags if they are relevant to the discussion. Similarly, the organization(s) to which an individual belongs may also be included if they are relevant to the discussion. For example, a topic about Marneus Calgar would definitely have the tag "Marneus Calgar" applied. If the topic concerned the Ultramarines Chapter, then the "Ultramarines Chapter" tag would also be applied. Similarly, the tag "Chapter Master" might also be applied. If the topic is about converting the Marneus Calgar miniature, however, the last two tags might not be used.

Spelling matters and is complicated by the differences between the United Kingdom and the United States of America for words like armour/armor, etc. In these cases, follow the spelling that is used in the rulebooks.

While capitalization doesn’t matter, members should use capitalization in tags appropriately. A caveat to this is that Games Workshop habitually uses unconventional capitalization for things like Terminators, Space Marine Chapters (i.e., the word "Chapter"), etc. In these cases, GW convention should be followed.

Abbreviations and acronyms should never be used as tags. There are too many that have multiple uses and/or are confusing.

Exact wording is important – terms and phrases should not be broken down into subordinate elements if those elements aren’t accurate. For example, “Chapter Master” is the default tag for any content relating to any Chapter Master (e.g., Vladimir Pugh, Marneus Calgar, Logan Grimnar). Breaking this term down into “Chapter” and “Master” would yield incorrect results. The “Chapter” tag would return any topic about a Space Marine Chapter while the “Master” tag would also return topics about Unforgiven Company Masters, Grey Knights Grand Masters, etc. Similarly, breaking “Space Marine” down into “Space” and “Marine” and other such uses are just as useless. So keep specific terms and phrases complete, only breaking them down if the subordinate elements provide real value in terms of accuracy, but only doing this in addition to the tag for the complete phrase/term.

Expect to see listings of recommended tags in the various resource topics (e.g., recommended tags for the Dark Angels and their Successors will be provided in the Dark Angels Resources topic found in the Dark Angels forum). When we restore the Librarium functionality we’ll also provide recommended tags in the articles (e.g., the article on Marneus Calgar will list the tags that we recommend for that character).

Ideally, the “correct” tags will be included when the topic is first created. This is when the topic and its associated tags are loaded to the database and the search engine. Editing topics later produces sub-optimal effects – the time for the search engine to be updated with the new tags varies (and sometimes doesn’t take effect at all).

While we would ideally like to see members using the correct tags, there is no realistic expectation that this is going to happen 100% of the time. So expect to see the moderators and administrators editing topics for tags. We don’t want this to be your planned outcome, however (i.e., not putting correct tags in because you expect the mods to do it for you is lazy and not desirable). Having to correct your tags won’t garner you any disciplinary action, either. I fully expect that the mods and admins are going to get really tired of editing topics in order to correct tags, so help us out by doing your best to make sure that your topics have all of the correct tags.

If you have questions about the tag guidelines or recommendations for additions/changes to the guidelines, feel free to post them in replies.

This topic serves as an index of paints and hexadecimal codes.

These codes will help hobbyists that are using the B&C's stable of painters, as well as those that are using BBCodes to format color themes.

The hexadecimal codes are approximations based on color swatches found online. Colors such as washes, inks, glazes, metallics, texture, etc. will vary from the colors shown. Where a color has multiple formats (e.g., layers, air, dry, etc.), prioritization has gone to the layer color. When there is no layer color, prioritization has gone to sprays, then air, then dry.

If you notice that a color is missing, or if you have suggestions for additional manufacturers, please post a reply in this topic.

All colors shown are simply approximations based on official color swatches. The depictions here cannot show effects from texture, pigmentation, matte/gloss, etc.

To start with, you need to go to the bottom left of the board to the skin selector drop down menu:

After that you will have several options to pick from, starting with the BnCDefault skin:

Now for those who find the dark skins to hard on the eyes or are afraid to use them at work or school we have two default skins that are included as part of the forum software. Please not that these skins do not have fancy graphics, html/php changes or any other tweaks that we do the specialty skins that you see above. This means some functions may not work 100% properly or will look somewhat different if you are using any of the following skins:

IPB Default skin:

Holiday skins will generally appear only on that holiday. Other skins, such as April Fools Day skins will appear only on April Fools day and will not be made available for future use. This is because we enter into an agreement with those sites we are swapping skins with to not reuse their graphics after April Fools day. April Fools Day skins are generally 1 time only.

The Bolter and Chainsword Space Marine Painter

T
he B&C Marine Painter was created by Brother Argos with madscuzzy's artistic skills so that members of the Bolter and Chainsword would have a more robust way to display their Space Marine Chapters to other users. However like all tools there are some tricks to using it and that is the purpose of this tutorial.

Important note : The painter was written for use with the most recent versions of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.03 running on a PC. Brother Argos would have loved to be able to test and develop this tool on other operatings systems and alternate browsers, however he doesnt have a Mac and his only Linux box spends all day running the Bolter & Chainsword. He apologises for this and if anyone wishes to give him a Mac or Linux box to work with he will gladly put this time in to get it working. If the Space Marine Painter works in those environments, please count your blessings, if it doesnt, there isn't much we can do unless you can afford to give us a new Mac or Linux Box.

Creating a Space Marine

[lightboxclose][/lightboxclose]
We will start with the painters main page. Here you can see the Marine "blank", the various areas that one can change and your options for a full scheme, half scheme or quartered scheme. You can also select to have an IA style grid background. At this stage you should try and visualise how you would like your chapter to appear and what colours are going to be used on the model.

[Please click on the image to the right for a screenshot]

[/clearfloat]

You can begin skinning a marine by going with the default "Normal" scheme. This means we will be doing standard marine who isn't split down the middle or into quarters. The image of a spacemarine is blank and waiting for you to choose the colours for the appropriate locations.

Next simply select the are you wish to start coloring by picking the appropriate location from the choices to the left or

right of the Marine image.

You now have two ways to change the color of that area. The text box color picker works with your standard 6 digit color codes that you would find in HTML and CSS. If you know the number of a color you like simply type it in.

Now this won't change the color of the area selected until you click another box to type in. But once you do, the selected
area (backpack exhausts for this tutorial) will change.

The other way to change the color is by using the blank square next to the text field, clicking this will bring up the colour chooser.

Choose the color of your choice and then hit select within the pallette. This will not only add the 6 digit number to the text boxbut will also change the selected area at the same time.

Now it is just a question of going through and filling in all your fields. However for a "normal" marine you can ignore the last two boxes, Half color and Quarter color.

Once you've finished filling in all the fields you are ready to get your Marine Code that will give you results like so:

Imperial Chapters like the Dark Angels or Ultramarines:

or not so Imperial Chapters like the Death Chickens or Emperor's Pointy Sticks:

Doing a Marine with a half or quartered scheme is easy with the B&C painter. Everything works the same as with creating a normal marine skin. The only difference is where you start.

For a half scheme Marine you simply start by clicking the Halved Scheme option just under the Marine.

Halved Marine Scheme

Quartered Marine Scheme

Then start at the bottom right of the section options and select Halving Color. This will divide the Marine down the middle of the head and torso like so:

Quartering works in the same way only you select Quarter Scheme and Quartering Color which will then quarter the marine with the color chosen:

After that you simply fill in the other color fields as necessary to match your desired scheme up to that of the painter.

Some example Chapters:

Once you have your scheme selected you can either keep the background color you have entered into the text field or you can simply check the Gridded Background box:

Now it's time to present your color scheme to the world!

Displaying your Marine

There are several ways in which you can display your finished Marine skin.

Obviously you could simply take a screenshot and then display it as a standard .jpg or .gif file on the board.

You could also "right click > properties" the images and get this monster of a URL:

http://bolterandchainsword.com/smp.php?bpe=0E05B5&bpj=0E05B5&bp=0E05B5&bpc=0E05B5
&hdt=0E05B5&hdm=0E05B5&hdl=0E05B5&ey=4DFF00&er=0E05B5&pi=666666&nk=0E05B5
&ch=0E05B5&eg=DB9B04&sk=DB9B04&abs=0E05B5&bt=0E05B5&cod=0E05B5&ull=0E05B5&
lk=0E05B5&lll=0E05B5&lft=0E05B5&url=F00000&rk=F00000&lrl=F00000&rft=F00000&slt=F00000
&sli=F00000&srt=0E05B5&sri=0E05B5&ula=F00000&lel=F00000&lla=F00000&lw=F00000&lh=F00000
&ura=0E05B5&rel=0E05B5&rla=0E05B5&rw=0E05B5&rh=0E05B5&bg=FFFFFF&rb=333333&gr=8D621E
&qu=FF0000&grid=true

and slam it between some image tags. However this won't work unless you change the smp.php to sm.php.

But there is a more "board friendly" way to do this. First you can click the "GET URL" button just under the Marines feet.
[clearfloat]

This will open a new page that looks like this:

and gives you a URL code like so:

http://bolterandchainsword.com/sms.php?bpe=0E05B5&bpj=0E05B5&bp=0E05B5
&bpc=0E05B5&hdt=0E05B5&hdm=0E05B5&hdl=0E05B5&ey=4DFF00&er=0E05B5
&pi=666666&nk=0E05B5&ch=0E05B5&eg=DB9B04&sk=DB9B04&abs=0E05B5
&bt=0E05B5&cod=0E05B5&ull=0E05B5&lk=0E05B5&lll=0E05B5&lft=0E05B5
&url=F00000&rk=F00000&lrl=F00000&rft=F00000&slt=F00000&sli=F00000&srt=0E05B5
&sri=0E05B5&ula=F00000&lel=F00000&lla=F00000&lw=F00000&lh=F00000&ura=0E05B5
&rel=0E05B5&rla=0E05B5&rw=0E05B5&rh=0E05B5&bg=FFFFFF&rb=333333&gr=8D621E
&qu=FF0000&grid=true

Click the GET URL link under the Marines feet and the page will change to look like so:

Now this may seem like a lot of clicking but it serves and important purpose. First of all it gives you the proper link code that you can use to display your Marine. You will probably want to store this link in your Favorites or on a notepad (it is

generally too long for most IMs). The following is an example code

http://bolterandchainsword.com/sm.php?bpe=0E05B5&bpj=0E05B5&bp=0E05B5
&bpc=0E05B5&hdt=0E05B5&hdm=0E05B5&hdl=0E05B5&ey=4DFF00&er=0E05B5
&pi=666666&nk=0E05B5&ch=0E05B5&eg=DB9B04&sk=DB9B04&abs=0E05B5&
bt=0E05B5&cod=0E05B5&ull=0E05B5&lk=0E05B5&lll=0E05B5&lft=0E05B5&url=F00000
&rk=F00000&lrl=F00000&rft=F00000&slt=F00000&sli=F00000&srt=0E05B5&sri=0E05B5
&ula=F00000&lel=F00000&lla=F00000&lw=F00000&lh=F00000&ura=0E05B5
&rel=0E05B5&rla=0E05B5&rw=0E05B5&rh=0E05B5&bg=FFFFFF&rb=333333
&gr=8D621E&qu=FF0000&grid=true

The second reason for this is that now your marine colours are cached on the server and will load much faster when you display it in the future. This will also play into future plans for the painter that will be discussed later.

Now you can copy this code and place it in the following BBCodes to get it display on the Bolter and Chainsword:

[img][/img]

or if you remove the bit like this: -

http://bolterandchainsword.com/sm.php

you can put it into this code

[spacemarine][/spacemarine]

You can also further alter this image by making it smaller if you like. This requires you to add the following to the end of your URL: -

&small=TRUE

This will make your full URL look like so:

http://bolterandchainsword.com/sm.php?bpe=253BCC&bpj=253BCC
&bp=253BCC&bpc=253BCC&hdt=253BCC&hdm=253BCC&hdl=253BCC
&ey=EB0707&er=253BCC&pi=000000&nk=253BCC&ch=253BCC&eg=DEDEDE
&sk=DEDEDE&abs=253BCC&bt=253BCC&cod=253BCC&ull=253BCC
&lk=F5E553&lll=F5E553&lft=F5E553&url=253BCC&rk=F5E553&lrl=F5E553
&rft=F5E553&slt=F5E553&sli=F5E553&srt=F5E553&sri=F5E553&ula=253BCC
&lel=253BCC&lla=253BCC&lw=253BCC&lh=F5E553&ura=253BCC
&rel=253BCC&rla=253BCC&rw=253BCC&rh=F5E553&bg=CCCCCC
&rb=000000&gr=000000&grid=TRUE&small=TRUE

This will give you an image like so (please note the GRID option doesn't work in the small setting and so it automatically

turns off. You can still display this in the standard img tags but in order to display it in the new spacemarine tag you need

to use the special small version:

[smallspacemarine][/smallspacemarine]

The Future of the B&C Marine Painter

Plans for the future in NO particular order include:

Chaos Marines

Terminators

Sister of Battle

Vehicles

Shoulder pad side display

Shoulder pad display with the option to include a Chapter emblem

Power armor variants

Weapons: Bolters, Chainswords and more

The ability to store and display your marine skin based off your user #. For example you would post something along the lines of [marineskin]{membernumber}[//marineskin] and it would pull up that persons Chapter skin.

area click to get a color rather than using the pallette or text fields

Just a reminder:

If you have questions, comments or concerns feel free to post them in the tutorial discussion thread or PM
