  1. Skip to a month... Welcome to the 5th year of the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge. I started this challenge in 2019 to keep me motivated throughout the year, and to help me stick to my Hobby goal of completing *at least* one model per month. In 2019 I developed a series of Randomizer Tables are still available for this year, and you are most welcome to use them yourselves, or ask to put on the Randomizer List, and I will roll for everyone on the list a week prior to the new month. If you've missed the previous years Challenges, you can find them here, 2019 - 2019 Summary - Additional Awards - 2019 Favourite - 2019 Favourite Poll 2020 - 2020 Summary - Additional Awards - 2020 Favourite - 2020 Favourite Poll - The Campaign Summary 2021 - 2021 Summary - Additional Awards - 2021 Favourite - 2021 Favourite Poll 2022 - 2022 Summary - Additional Awards - 2022 Favourite - 2022 Favourite Poll 2023 - 2023 Summary - Additional Awards - 2023 Favourite - 2023 Favourite Poll As with last year, I'd like some company, if you'd like to join me with a commitment to 1x model (or more) per month for the 12 months of 2023, I'd love to have you along. The Rules are pretty simple; I DO NOT expect you to use the Random Tables, you are more than welcome to pledge models towards your existing armies, or choose a model you would like to complete. Multiple model pledges are fine, but ONLY ONE *must* be finished per month to "complete" the Challenge for the Month. A starting pic is required. Any model that is incomplete, even those that only require basing, are eligible for this Challenge. A finished pic is also required, this MUST be completed to your standards, AND the model MUST be based. If you know what you'd like to pledge, pop this pip in your signature, then pledge in the following format, you'll need to vow each month you wish to participate, I, { Insert your name } , embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, and for the month of { insert correct month } pledge to complete { insert the model/s to be completed } by month's end. Last year saw the introduction of the Challenge+ mini-challenge, I did not complete mine, and will continue it this year, so it is open for others to continue theirs, or for people to start fresh. Challenge+ features four, 3 Month long Challenges, one each for the four Quarters of the year. The first Challenge, running from January to December is the What if? Challenge. If you choose to take up this Challenge, you will be creating (kind of) a custom unit for the game. You will need to take an existing unit entry from one Codex, and shoe-horn it into another. For example, I will be doing; What if the Tau weren't incompetent in Close Quarters Combat? What if they had an Assault Intercessor type unit? Once you have chosen your unit swap, you will need to complete two tasks, the first is to re-name the unit with a suitable name for the new Faction, as well as any Wargear and Special Abilities they may have. Secondly you will need to model and paint a single model from your created unit. Please keep the units to infantry sized models, no Tanks or Independent Characters. Please choose different proper Factions, please don't do What if? Dark Angels had this Blood Angels unit, or Space Wolves unit etc. The second Challenge Copy Cat, running from April to December, is a little easier. You must choose one of the other What if? entries and model a single model from that new unit. The third Challenge, Wordsmith, running from July to December requires a small short story of an interaction (peaceful, or not...) between the two models / units you have completed in the What if? and Copy Cat Challenges. I'm not going to put a word limit on these, but think 300 - 500 words or so (I won't be counting though). The fourth and final Challenge, running from October to December is to place the two models you have created, onto / into a scenic diorama base, showing or referencing details from the Wordsmith Challenge. I recommend looking at a 80mm or 90mm base for this, as I've found 60mm a little crowded. Lastly for anyone who manages to complete all four Challenges by Years End, the Challenge+ Veteran Badge will be awarded. The Challenges should be completed in order, however, as you can see from the timing of each Challenge, once the Challenge has started it remains open for the rest of the year to allow newcomers to pick up the Challenge+ challenges if they so desire. When you pledge to a Challenge+ challenge, or complete a Challenge+ challenge, please place the correct badge from above into your post for easier identification so that I don't miss anything. I will re-post the badges with each new month for ease of access. If you know what you're going to paint, then jump right in and click HERE to skip the Randomizer Tables, and make your pledge below. *IF* , however, you would like to use the tables, you'll need 2D6. 5. Yesterday,I found this article: "20 Horus Heresy Solar Auxilia Trooper Colour Schemes and Painting Recipes All In One Place", by Vicent Knotley, from his own blog. Quite interesting and useful I think. And very handy. Some schemes are really cool. 7. Quick note: this is being presented as a sequel to my previous Battle Report, which can be found here. The Iron Hands armored drive through Ardenner Wood completely outflanked the Davidian Line, and Throne-loyal troops poured into the breach behind the advancing Astartes. As the Iron Hands lead the drive directly on the Capitolis Hive Cluster, Cadian troops fanned out behind them and attacked into the flanks and rear of the Traitor forces holding the Davidian defenses. One reconnaissance overflight identified a large supply cache at the edge of the Ardenner area, and the Cadians diverted to seize it, or at the very least deny it to the Archenemy. Upon arriving at the cache near Rorke's Ford, the Guard formation were suddenly overwhelmed by feelings of dread and confusion; a Noctilith Crown, vile corrupted fortifications of Chaos, had been erected by the cache. Asserting their wills, the Guard moved in to destroy the cache when, much to the surprise of the Loyalists, swarms of Traitor Astartes emerged from hiding and counter-attacked fiercely. The stalwart Guardsmen, rushing to the attack, suddenly found themselves thrown to the defensive as Traitor armor and Chaos-infused Space Marines rushed their lines. FORCE OMICRON Master of Possession (Undivided, Warlord) Exalted Champion (Khorne, Talisman of Burning Blood) Sorcerer (Tzeentch, Eye of Tzeentch) 10x Legionaries (Tzeentch) 10x Cultist Mob (Nurgle) 10x Chosen (Khorne) 10x Possessed (Undivided) 5x Havocs (Nurgle) 5x Raptors (Slaanesh) Land Raider (Khorne) Rhino (Tzeentch) 2x Helbrutes (both Nurgle) Noctilith Crown (Nurgle) ASTRA MILITARUM Cadian Command Squad Commissar Tank Commander in Leman Russ Vanquisher 4x Cadian Shock Troopers 3x Leman Russ Battle Tanks 3x Basilisks Baneblade GAME SETUP We drew Hammer & Anvil, Sites of Power, and Minefields; I went with Tactical Objectives, but my opponent chose to use Fixed Objectives of Assassination and Bring it Down. My opponent won the deployment roll and chose to Defend. He mostly back against his board edge, content once again to stand on the defensive rather than advance and seize objectives (more on this later). He parked his artillery on my left, screen by infantry, with more infantry and the officers in the center, and his heavy armor on my right. I placed the Crown front & center, with my Possessed on the right, Legionaries in a Rhino with Helbrute supprt on the left, and the rest in the center to benefit from the Crown's aura. I won the roll for first turn. TURN 1 I drew Area Denial and Engage on All Front for my first turn -- not a good draw. I advanced my Possessed out of the forest and onto the right-hand objective, taking some cover behind the shipping containers. On the left, the Rhino moved up and disembarked the Legionaries; the Cultists (having stickied my home objective) and a Helbrute followed my Land Raider as it pushed up to the limited of the Crown's aura and nudged into scoring range of the center objective. I was able to kill one Leman Russ and one Basilisk via shooting, as well as clearing out an entire squad of Cadians on the Guard's home objective. The Cadian retort would have been worse for him, but after our last game I wanted to help my opponent learn the game and his army a bit better, and help him tactically. We had a pretty good discussion about the importance of maneuver and objectives, and I started pointing out the use of special rules and stratagems as well as aiding his decisions in terms of target priority. The end result was that his anti-tank fire mostly bounced off the protective aura around my Land Raider, but he killed most of the Legionaries (with Basilisks and infantry) and five of the Possessed (mostly battle cannons) -- ouch! Score was 0-0 at the end of the round. TURN 2 Turn two opened with a Skinshift on the Legionaries, bringing back my heavy bolter, as well as my using Insane Bravery on the same unit to avoid a battle shock test. I scored on four objectives, with extra points on the two flank objectives for having characters on them. My shooting left the Baneblade on 6 wounds remaining (he made four of five 5+ saves against Havoc lascannons!), wounded the Tank Commander, almost killed another Basilisk, and killed about one and half squads of Cadians. I actually charged the Rhino into the Shock Trooper squad on the hill to get far enough over the line to score Engage on All Fronts; getting the Cultists onto the center objective scored me Area Denial. The Cadian turn saw their lines actually advance a little; the remaining tanks on my right pulled into line-abreast, and the Command Squad moved up to keep its vox in range. The Land Raider once again tanked all the enemy fire with no damage thanks mostly to Smokescreen, but the Rhino was peeled off the hilltop Cadians by the Basilisks' hunter-killer missiles. I lost my central Helbrute, and more Possessed. My opponent scored on his home objective and Bring It Down, ending the round on 23-8. TURN 3 I failed my battle shocks on both the Legionaries and the Possessed, so the only objectives I held were my home and the center thanks to the Cultists -- and no extra points for Empowered. That was disappointing to say the least. I drew A Tempting Target (the left objective with the Legionaries) and Behind Enemy Lines. The Helbrute moved up to hold the objective for Tempting Target, and I did lots of measuring to figure out the best place to send the Chosen. . . but in the end left them in the Land Raider. Until I could kill the Leman Russes, they'd be exposed and I didn't want them butchered before getting into charge range of something. I finished killing off some more infantry, while my Havocs finally put paid to the Baneblade. The Land Raider whiffed on the Tank Commander, though that second Helbrute finished off the wounded Basilisk with its lascannons. At this point, we called the game. I had a family issue crop up, but my opponent wasn't too thrilled at his prospects -- he'd lost almost all his infantry, two thirds of his artillery, his super-heavy, and was down by 20 points. While we packed up, I went ahead and mentally calculated out the most probably results of the next two and a half turns. I figured I'd lose the Legionaries and Sorcerer, maybe the Cultists and/or Havocs, but I had enough forward momentum -- not to mention two squads that hadn't even hit the table yet! -- that I figured on the following results: GAME SUMMARY Like I mentioned earlier, there was a bunch of back and forth about tactics, fire priority, and the need to maneuver, so hopefully my opponent takes some of those lessons to heart. He understood the points I was making, he was just very down on his dice luck and determined to play into a "Guard defend things" theme. I, on the other hand, learned that Leman Russ battle cannons are very good against Possessed, and Prescience doesn't do much to defend against a full artillery battery. I really wanted to sprint my Possessed into the tank line and let Devastating Wounds do its thing, but without cover and slowed by the Earthshaker rounds the best route was really to crouch behind those containers and just score points. As I'm typing this, I realized that I completely forgot about the Icons on the infantry squads giving me rerolls for my Dark Pact Leadership checks. . . so maybe I'd have scored higher on Round 3. Lesson learned there, too. The repulse of the Loyalist raid on Rorke's Ford was damaging to their strategy, though not fatal. Now that Crusade command knew of the Alpha Legion presence, they could adjust to suit -- or at least attempt to do so, as that Legion was notorious for its ability to surprise opponents. More importantly, the destruction of the Cadian armor column had torn away a large portion of the flank shield the Loyalists had thrown up to protect the Iron Hands' own thrust towards the Capitolis. If the Traitors could capitalize on this, they could restore the breach in the Davidian Line and pin the Iron Hands against the hive fortifications.
  8. Hi Folks, As I am looking to a good way to maintain my motivation, it looks like the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge is an kind of answer to it. Getting to stick to monthly objectives, with 12 small or limited projects and the option of 2 big ones might be a good structure to keep on cleaning the remains of my Pile of Shame. Which might eventually, although haviong shrunk a lot lately, start to grow again. Shall we put it into perspective with what remains for my Pile of Shame and my 2024 WishList, I guess the firsts months will be structured around what is already waiting to be painted. I have some choice here: 3 IG heavy weapon teams 5 ooP Rhino Chassis Some left spore mines One kit bashed Carnaudon One kit bashed LR 2 ooP EPIC titans some ooP EPIC SM Legion Boxes 1 ooP EPIC Levithan some ooP EPIC Squats Boxes 1 Engine Seer The Carnaudon needs its turret to be redone fully and the kit Bashed LR looks dull, so it has some huge Plasticard work to start to look like something shoeboxed (yes, it can be possible getting a LR shoeboxier than the genuine shoebox). Might be a perfect pollding/6 month a project for later in the year. EPIC... Well, I am not convinved by my paint schemes and habilñities at this 6 mm scale. I still need to practice a little bit. As I have some projects in mind for the Seer and the HW, it leaves me ATM only the Rhinos. ...Interesting selection process... We played heads and tails with my daughter so that she innocently selected the models to forego the repainting/transformation first. From these 5 chassis, it left apart (for the moment) the Vindicator and the Predator, as well as the oldest Rhino (the first mini I painted ever for 40k). I will start with the 2 remaining Rhinos, which by the way, are tooled up in the same way. Here are the starting pictures of these 2 models, base coated in grey. Let´s go with my standard paint scheme for SW. More to be shared later, once some progress will be achieved to be worth being shown. PS: Oh! And of course the required pledge: I, Bouargh, embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, and for the month of January 2024 pledge to complete 2 Rhinos by month's end.
  9. As the Palachian Crusade ground on, the forces of the Imperium found themselves in the unenviable position of facing dug-in Traitor formations. In particular, the Davidian Line was a complex and formidable series of fixed defenses that protected the main approaches to the capitol hive clusters. Breaching the Davidian Line was a slow process, and while this attritional style of warfare suited most of the Astra Militarum officers involved, the Astartes chapters within the Crusade found it to be a contemptible waste of time and resources. The Davidian Line, for all of its strength, was an incomplete fortification. Its extreme ends were anchored in restricted terrain, relying on the difficulty of the ground to support weaker garrisons. An Ironstorm assault force of Iron Hands sought to cut through the Ardenner Wood -- which housed the southern end of the defensive line -- overrun the garrison, and outflank the entire fortification completely. If accomplished, the Davidian Line could either be rolled up from behind or, more likely, the tank column could push on to the capitol hives and unhinge the entire defense. Traitor Guard forces, whether alerted by reconnaissance or else already planning on a build up in the Ardenner Wood, were beginning to gather their strength in the region as well. Powerful mechanized formations had been diverted to this area. While the presence of such powerful formations did come as a mild surprise to the Iron Hands, they were not deterred and, once committed, smashed into the defenses like a tsunami. Additionally, he threw his list together for a theme, and a bit randomly, so bear with me. Cadian Command Squad Commissar 4x Cadian Infantry Squads 3x Leman Russ Vanquishers 3x Chimaerae 4x Basilisks (Rule of Three, I know, but it's not a tourney and he's new. I figured I'd let him have his big guns) 3x Aegis Defense Lines (using the old trench models) GAME SETUP We drew Supply Drop, Supply Lines, and Search & Destroy. I chose attacker, he deployed first, and I won the roll-off for first turn. My deployment established my Brutalis, Techmarine, and both Land Raiders with their character & Aggressor complements front and center, with the Lancers on the flanks. One HINT squad sat on my home objective for Supply Lines, while the other two deployed on the flanks to make runs to the objectives. The Guard deployed his Aegis Lines across the neck of his DZ and occupied them with infantry. The artillery was crammed in the back, with the battle tanks and APCs sandwiched in between. It was, he admitted, an extreme defensive position -- which fits the "trench warfare" theme he really likes -- though I pointed out the severe handicap he'll face to actually get onto objectives. The objective to my "north" was the Alpha objective, and the central objective was the Omega objective. TURN 1 I drew Area Denial and Tempting Target (the "northern" objective). I thew my assault wave forward, with the flanking infantry rolling low on their Advances as they charged for their assigned objectives. The Dreadnought and the Land Raider Phobos (with Captain, Apothecary, and three Aggressors inside) maneuvered to the north of the central objective, and the Land Raider Redeemer (with Feirros and six Aggressors) cut to the south. Stupidly, I forgot to position close enough to that central objective to actually hold it at the start of the next turn. My opening salvos were quite strong, killing one Leman Russ, one Chimaera, and killing a handful of infantrymen. Because of my positioning :cuss:, I scored neither secondary objective. The Guard response focused heavily on my Redeemer. I used Smokescreen, which combined with good save rolls kept the Redeemer alive with just four wounds remaining. Artillery strikes on my advancing infantry resulted in them being Shaken and slowing them down considerably. The ragged remnant of an infantry squad made a run for the northern objective. TURN 2 It was time to deliver the pain. My assault tanks drew up to the Aegis Lines and disgorged their cargo before laying on another blistering salvo. The Redeemer picked up a whole squad despite the 4++ of the Aegis Line, while the Phobos and the Lancers put paid to a second Russ and almost killed another Chimaera. The Aggressors and their character attachments cut down most of the remaining infantry before charging into the two "ends" of the Aegis Line. One was destroyed outright, while the other survived with just a few remaining wounds due to some poor dice rolling on my part. One Lancer had positioned near the central objective, so I scored Area Denial but zeroed on Primary. The Guard attempted a counterattack, but they were rapidly running out of viable anti-tank weapons. My HINTs were again subjected to bombardments to keep them slow, and Smokescreen and some poor dice rolling by the Guard player meant my Phobos continued to limp along on four wounds. One HINT and one Aggressor were killed by Guard guns, but I rolled very hot on Feirros' FNP for his squad. That alone saved me from losing another two Aggressors this turn. TURN THREE The flank-running HINTs finally made it to their assigned objectives, which scored me Tempting Target, while I finally got some Primary as well from the Lancer holding the center. I drew Bring It Down, which fit really well because he had multiple wounded vehicles ready for finishing blows. Feirros' Aggressors closed in on the remaining Leman Russ, while the Captain's squad was still pounding on the Aegis Line. The Lancers remained stationary, and the Dreadnought and Techmarine moved up to support the final assault. Firepower killed one Chimaera and two Basilisks, while the Aggressors took the last wounds off the Leman Russ in close combat. All remaining infantry were also cleaned up between flamestorms and Aggressors, while Feirros' axe killed the Commissar as his bodyguard chewed up the tank. In addition to Tempting Target, I scored 8 VPs on Bring It Down. The two remaining Basilisks vainly tried to kill some more of my infantry, but his heart wasn't in it since I had ripped apart his army and only lost two infantry models so far. As we contemplated the board at the end of Turn 3, he conceded. TURN 4 & 5 In summary: I worked through the two remaining turns to make a reasonable determination of the final score after five rounds. My Turn 4 draw was Cleanse and No Prisoners (I assumed I would kill two of three remaining vehicles), and my Turn 5 draw was Engage on All Fronts and Extend Battle Lines. Even removing the Alpha objective in Turn 4, I was still holding the other two, and maxed on Primary points in the last two turns. Final score was 73-0. GAME SUMMARY My opponent is a guy I've played before but like I said, he's still pretty new to the game overall and hasn't had a lot of actual table time. Combined with a rather off-the-cuff army list, I'm not surprised at the rather grinding victory. After the mistakes of deployment and Turn One, I tried to start coaching him a little by pointing out stratagems he could use and talking through his shooting priorities but the deck was simply too stacked in my favor. Still, he's a good sport and much good conversation was had post-game. The Astartes assault through the Ardenner Wood was nigh-unstoppable. Though traitor armor was positioned in the region, the Iron Hands proved superior in their handling of their tanks and ruthlessly eliminated the defenders. Imperial forces were now racing through a breach in the Davidian Line, and the entire traitor position on-world was suddenly very much in doubt.
