Armies played

  1. This is my first proper thread since joining this forum. I am finally committed to playing 40k tabletop. So I spent the coin to buy models in preparation for 10th ED. I'll run down my two prospective armies: | Black Templars | Ever since I first heard about 40k, the Black Templars have been one of my favorite chapters. I may have liked others more at one time or another. For example, before I settled on BT I intended on building a Raven Guard, Crimson Fists, or Iron Hands army. But I always felt myself drawn back to the Templars, so I decided on them (also my brother is building a Blood Angels army, who I was also considering building and I wanted something different). Their aesthetic, their lore, the way they fight, everything about them screams a 40k that I adore. It represents something that other chapters don't provide me. Something distinctly older, something gothic, something unique. It helps my favorite Primarch is Rogal Dorn as well, the IF and their successors just appeal to me. I've bought most of these boxes fairly recently, and it's the army I intend to be my first to play a game of 10th ED when it releases. I also have a Predator kit on the way. I debated on getting that or a Rhino, but opted for the tank because I love it so much. Next | Word Bearers | This prospective army is much, much smaller right now. Just 5 CSM from a box of 10 I split with my brother and a box of Raptors. And this is probably where it will stay for now. I originally intended to build a Iron Warriors army, but settled on the WB after much thought. I am a loyalist first and foremost. But the Word Bearers have always been an interesting warband to me, and Lorgar an interesting character. Additionally, I really like their color scheme. This army will be painted, but priority is the BT. /// I will update this thread as I make progress, but it will probably be very infrequent. All tips and criticism welcome, I am extremely novice tabletop player, builder, and painter. I want to get better.
  2. Templar-izing my Outriders I already have a pretty large bike force for my Black Templars so I've been waiting excitedly for the Outriders. I added some of my existing bike conversion parts to the mix along with the heavy guardbrace on the shoulder pads. For the exhausts, I removed the thinner segment of the exhaust pipe filed it smooth then attached my resin upgrades rather than just drilling out the tube. Because they are so small they can be a bit fiddly but IMO it's worth the effort. It helps to add them before attaching the side pieces to the bikes, while you can still do it at any point it's just easier while it's still separate. I use a jewelry saw to remove the tube tips on the exhaust since it makes a nice clean & controlled cut, then filed everything smooth before attaching the resin tips. I use the tip of my hobby knife or a sewing needle carefully touched between the vents and help pick it up so I can eyeball that everything is straight before pressing it in place. The guardbrace was heated in very hot water for about 15 seconds then bent around the shoulder pad. (Hot enough to make tea) If you mess up they can be reheated and they'll flatten back out. Just make sure they aren't too cold when you go to bend them or they could crack. If's it's heated correctly it'll be very pliable. I used one of the Templar vehicle crosses on the hood and the shrine on the rear is a press molded copy of the top of the buttress piece from the Imperial Sector city fight terrain. The Emperor's Shadows Space Marine Chapter. Based on models painted by Victoria Lamb for the 5th Edition How to Paint Space Marines book. Note: Due to the amount of 'detail' in this sheet, it is not scaled to the usual A5 paper, but rather the half sized A6 paper (roughly 1/4 the size of US Letter paper).
  4. Thought I'd do a up a gift for an old Black Templar bud who didn't have time for his army with everything life was throwing at him. With the army sold, I figured he could at least ahve something on his desk...his attitude about things really is the Champ's credo: "Accept any challenge, no matter the odds!" Lots to do just yet, but the Emperor's Champ is coming along. Top pic is after the gold was put over brown undercoat. All told he's about 16" tall including the sword... Midway...browns are undercoating before the gold. Early scratches/damage stage...what a pain at this scale lol
  5. Brothers, I come seeking your insight on a full primaris Templar force. I'm happy to pepper in a unit or two of non-primaris, but I would like the majority to be our glorious-sized brethren. I don't need to be winning tournaments, but I would like to at least be competitive enough to win a good few hard-fought games.
  6. A fledgeling crusade page from a longtime Templar modeler who’s decided to finally start putting together a thematic army with some light personal fluff.
  7. I used to have a thread on here tracking my progress on my crusade and it appears to have gotten deleted. Still, I need a place to post what I am working on so here we are. The crusade gets its name for a star system I created for a deathwatch campaign, I got it pretty fleshed out and would be happy to write up the fluff if anyone is interested in that sort of thing, but the TLDR is as follows. 1. Its a system of several planets, but only 2 of them have breathable atmospheres. 2. One of these planets is on a highly eccentric orbit, the surface is a boiling desert when it is close to the sun, followed by decades of frozen wasteland as it moves away. The incredibly harsh conditions drew the space marines to this world as a testing ground, and it still houses some old imperial research stations under the ice. 3. the other world is a hive, housing all life in the system 4. A research station from the horus heresy was re-discovered on a moon of the systems gas giant. The concentration of relics in this area is abnormally high, but the system is largely forgotten. The great rift has made traveling here difficult, and even if you were to claim the treasures it has to offer, would you be able to leave with them? The Black Templar arrived centuries ago to purge a chaos threat, but once it was banished back to the warp they were trapped in the system by the great rift, and new threats have appeared the threaten the area... The drop pod list is good but its looking a little... unpainted. I am taking this string of victories as a cry for paint, and my mini's will be rewarded. But first they needed some templar-ing up. I found out Walmart sells 9ft of jewelry chain for $4, so I have gotten to work. I will post my progress here, and hopefully it will be good motivation to continue the work.
  8. Within the death glazed cast of his eyes reflected the angry riot of color that the sky had become. Swelling nebulae of pinks and purples swallowed deep hues of red and orange, swirling in violet and turning, burning, and dying to cool blue and green and all the other manic colors of the hell unleashed by traitor perfidy. It was a stark contrast to the gray rockcrete dust in which his body lay. The soot caked the broken black plate that clothed him, peppered in spatters of blood; some his own, some not. It was as though the planet mourned for him, cradling its fallen defender in the crestfallen prayers of quiet, shell pocked stone even as the sky reveled in his defeat. Somewhere the staccato boom of gunfire echoed, an unwitting salute to his centuries of service. Suddenly, a great shadow loomed across the corpse of Marshal Ansgar of the Black Templars, and a scaled, corpse gray talon of a foot crushed down into the earth around him. "Now you see, fool," the daemon breathed. "just how futile it has always been." The voice seemed to come from each of three silver skulls that had grown from a monstrous helmet, jaws locked open in howling agony. Two horns jutted from its triple brow, each glowing with caged warp flame and cradling a jagged crown of gleaming jet shards. It spread its massive, apish arms wide and as it did, its impossible black wings stretched to their full span. "Behold, Ansgar, Hero of the Imperium," Orbus the Resplendent spat the mocking title like a curse. "the death of all you hold dear." The creature's three skulls seemed to change expression from one of horror to mockery as the beast turned its mammoth helm to gaze upon the tear in the sky. Its great lungs tasted the heat in the air eagerly and daemons swarmed around its feet, licking at the blood on the ground and snarling at one another in challenge. For a moment, the prince of daemons surveyed the hellish battleground, privately rejoicing in the deaths it witnessed, feeding on the pain and terror of its coming. A joke came to it, as it thought of these zealots, dying for a god its father created. All walked the path of the Urizen. Some were simply further along than others. Did that mean it was murdering the faithful? Were the servants of the Imperium not simply infants, taking but their first shaking steps upon its own road of faith? Were they not the same? Orbus laughed because it did not matter, and turned back to its dead opponent. "Four long centuries, you have endured," it snarled. "Only to be found wanting here, now, at the beginning of the end." Orbus snorted, thinking of the millennia it had devoted to its father's work. "You were an insect," it mused. "You were always an insect. Insignificant, and I told you so, and only now that your guts are being devoured by my pets could you begin to fathom that truth." Orbus sighed in mock disappointment. "But you cannot, for you are dead, mighty Ansgar." Orbus bent down, bringing its skulls within inches of Ansgar's ruined head and inhaled deeply. It sounded like a small hurricane. Orbus laughed. "I can smell your soul stuff reaching to the infinite," the daemon gasped in pleasure as it looked back up toward the sky. "Is it not magnificent, my most unworthy nemesis? Is it not wondrous?" "But alas," Orbus chuckled as he whipped his head back to regard the broken body at its feet. "It is not for you, brother." The daemon's chuckling grew to cacophonous laughter in one skull, curdled to horrified shrieking in another, and as Orbus extended the brass gilded talons of its hands to caress the ruined face of its enemy, it spoke calmly through the third, "Allow me to heap upon you one final injustice." ************************************************* To be continued...
