  1. Hey all, Newcomer to the forums here, although I've been a long time lurker and admirer of some of your excellent works. I've decided to take the plunge and start my own post regarding my humble Iron Warriors collection. It is an amalgamation of various armours, models, themes and timelines (so please don't expect any clinical accuracy regarding 30k/40k lore with the models themselves). Feedback welcome as always - see if you can tell who's inspired some of these miniatures! Brother Ortraxes Brother Ortraxes was there, all those years ago. He had seen it. He had seen the crumbling edifices of Imperial sovereignty, the once mighty bastions of the Imperial Palace laid low by the brilliance of their lord, and the cowardice and failure of the other legions. He had witnessed the birth of a dying emperor, and the damnation of his legion into the miasma of the warp. Ortraxes' rage had been kindled in those final moments, turned inwards. It had turned tempered iron into a brittle, unyielding mockery of its former self. He had become less than what he was, a bestial, snarling and feral member of the IVth legion. He was no longer governed by reason or pride or the honour of his legion. Ortraxes wished only to descend into the crucible of combat, where he could lay waste to the followers of this new, marooned, mongrel emperor. He would have his wish. Breacher Squad Themis Iron. A brittle and fragile metal, unless it is tempered and honed and utilised in its correct manner. Breacher Squad Themis had once been nearly twenty strong. At the time of the siege of the Imperial Palace, there had been twelve of them. Now, just five remained. They had been used as a blunt spearhead. They had been used to drive back the fury of the loyalist astartes, to venture into the ash covered wastes, to weather the fusillades of bolter, las and volkite fire and push back the vengeance of the emperor. Their panoplies had grown accustomed to their wearers. Each one had been modified, improved, and altered to best suit the needs of the occupant. Each one had been assembled from whatever pieces of equipment the IVth could muster in the eye of the heresy. Hastily assembled suits of armour that, whilst tailored to the occupant, was the best that could be done with the lot that had been given to them. Legate Acastus Acastus had not wished to be leader. He had not wished to have the mantle of responsibility thrust upon him so. When the former legate was conflagrated in a whirling maelstrom of flame and death, with nought but his charred remains to bear witness to his life, Acastus fell back on his training. He had pushed the opening. His bolter had grown heavy in his arms, and his shield was twisted and buckled from the torrent of abuse that had been directed at him. His left arm, long trained to bear the heavy adamantite shield, had grown limp and useless. But still, still he had marched forwards. Acastus' bolter had screamed vengeance at the Imperial defenders, barking death and terror as the inexorable Iron Warrior strode forwards. Acastus, through his stoicism, through leading by example, had earned the title of Legate. A title that rested uneasily on his brow. Brother's Acestes and Urian Brother's Acestes and Urian were unusual in the IVth legion. Born from the same village, they had been rivals since childhood. When Perturabo inducted them into the vaunted halls of the IVth legiones astartes, their rivalry became muted. Dulled by the realisation that, for all their pride and scorn for each other, they were but dust in the vast machinery of the great crusade. After the dropsite massacre, Acestes had been fortunate to acquire a highly advanced Iron Hands mark III helmet. The enhanced optics, coupled with the high levels of protection and durability that mark III offered, had rendered it a sought after trophy, and one that Acestes jealously guarded. Urian, in contrast, sought only to outlast Acestes. Whilst dulled and dwarfed by the machinations of the galaxy at large, his pride and stubborness had rendered him unable to see past Acestes' shadow. The silhouette of Acestes was one that drew tempered loathing from Urian. He vowed to outlast Acestes, and to have Acestes know that it was he, Urian, who was the better of the two. Brother Tiege The melta that Tiege wields has been heavily altered and customised, to mark the enemy and burn fear into their psyche. Brother Tiege had spent time with the Dark Angels legion, presumably where he had acquired their signature helm. Little is known about Tiege, having spent the majority of his service prior to the heresy on a fringe planet, dutifully guarding against the agonies of boredom. Brother Parthenios Parthenios was an outlier amongst the Iron Warriors. He had been given his name after his ascension to an astartes, owing to his unusually young recruitment age. Despite the kinly mocking that his brothers bestow upon him, he remains steadfast in his duty to dispense death to the enemies of the IVth. Having a particular affinity for grenades and chemical warfare, Parthenios has a surplus of explosive armaments adorning him for every engagement. ______________________ That's all for now guys - let me know what you think! Big praise to Apologist - it was his Iron Warriors blog on here that got me back into the hobby.
  2. I thought I'd share my Chaos army and various WIP things, hopefully to motivate myself to get some more painting done! I have a decent sized Iron Warriors army, as well as a goodly number of Thousand Sons, which I'll get pictures of later. My current projects are a start up Emperor's Children Warband, and a force of The Cleaved. The Cleaved: I made this Plague Marine years and years ago when I had a spare blob of Green Stuff. The armour was a test piece for the new foundations, its straight Dheneb with a heavy devlan wash. He got some nice armour scores, and some weeping joints I abandoned them for a very long time, until the release of the new codex, whereupon I made a couple of plasma gunners to come later. I also have 5 of these guys that will be geting the cleaved treatment. My very first tank, well over 10 years old with an awful splotchy (but thin) nurgle paint job, back when the mark of Nurgle gave your vehicle +1AV all round. Rather than give it to the Iron Warriors, I've honoured it's heritage and dedicated it to the cleaved. The marine on the back was originally an ultramarine, but the blue wouldnt look good with the colour scheme. Green, however would, and seeing as there will probably be a few new DA players soon...and also to annoy Skink a little. The Nurglings on top need some detailing, as well as a few other bits and bobs, but I consider it table worthy after a weekend's work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With the new codex, I jumped at the chance to finally get some Slaaneshi marines under my belt. Noise marines with an 80's hair metal vibe. I wanted a full Sonic blaster squad, buy only had one and the blastmaster, so time to make up some stuff: Dude doing a squealy blaster solo, and regular blaster dude. You cant quite see the detail, ut they have hides/skin GS'd onto their leg armour, and regular dude has GW barbed wire wrapped around his thigh. Blastmaster and DeathKorg. You cannot have a band without a synth, so this guy got made up. The idea is that the bolter fires, gets some funky rhythm attached to it as it goes along the barrel, then hits the opponent with some music that they've probably never heard of. Noise Champion: Since squad leaders cannot currently have blasters, and in the hope that they can someday, I made something in between a combi bolter and blaster, the backpack (from the classic NM) and belt amp can also double as a Doom Siren. Smile:
  3. This will be my thread for my Iron Warriors. I started this thread for myself, partly because I was going off topic in my own thread for my Word Bearers here... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305821-committing-to-word-bearers/page-2?do=findComment&comment=4668714 So that's settled. I have a bunch of mk3 marines from BoP. Some of which I will make Iron Warriors. 20 for now. I plan to get up to a 750 point grand co. These first 20 marines will be a 10 man havoc squad with 4 autocannons (converted from BoP heavy bolters) and 2 x 5 man with plasma. Need to aquire and build 5 raptors with 2 meltas, (I know bikes are recommended but I just don't like them) and some terminators... prefferably from calth... to build my elite... also need a PA chaos lord with a big mace... my aux will be the munitorum containers. (I think I posted the list somewhere already for the 750 point grandco) Moving beyond 750. I plan to add some cheap fortifications, home built defensive line with comms and the various barricades, wire and tank traps for a start. Bump the Termies up to 5 and a chaos lord in terminator armour, which will nicely come from a single calth box. Bulk the "tacticals" each to 10 with 2 plasmas and add 4 lascannon havocs in a tenner some how... and definitly a warsmith guiding some oblits, but... I realy don't like oblits models... my plan is instead to follow in purturbo's footsteps and build robots to do the job instead, just no clue how to do it yet, only certain that they should look like smaller iron circle robots with WAY MORE DAKKA.
  4. The Roar Before Silence Fell To robbery, slaughter, and plunder they give the lying name of Empire; They make a solitude, and call it peace. Attributed to the Kalidonaeon, Kilgaccus, by the Historator Takitis, M0.1, Terra The imperial regime owes its legitimacy to force, and at no time does it attempt to conceal this nature of being. Attributed to the Philosopher and Revolutionary Fannon, M1.9, Terra The sword was given for this, that none need live a slave. Attributed to the Historator Lucanis, M0.1, Terra Artwork by Richard Wright (From 6th Edition Rulebook, I think?) The wars of mankind across the galaxy, from the rage of the Horus Heresy to the fury of the Black Crusades and unto the dying years of the Time of Ending, have been but the death throes of a civilization so far fallen it cannot understand what it has lost. From the promise and hope of the first years of exploration and the Age of Technology, mankind has fallen to a barbarism so complete it cannot mourn its own fall. Through the Age of Darkness, and into the Age of the Imperium, no glory has borne a resemblance to the shadows of that which came before it. The Emperor, for all his power and might, which are storied, built an empire from the shattered pieces of what came before. He could not know that the pieces would not align; that they would prove to be less than the sum of their parts. When they fell, and He failed, it was not in spite of, but because of His power that hope dwindled. In the aftermath of His Imperial Majesty, there was no equal and the echoes of His coming grew still in the long years of entropy. His works still labour on, broken and bleeding towards as slow a death as they can muster. Heroes have risen, and come, and fallen, and gone, and still His Imperium remains. It is not the pillar of fire and light that He imagined it to be, but the embers of a dream slowly swallowed by an encroaching darkness. And in that darkness, in the last embers of humanitys struggle, the galaxy burns to the chorus of the roar before silence fell. Aside 2020.9.28. I've always wanted to launch a WIP thread on the forums, but I've never had the dedicated time to work on making it a project that interested me more than simply posting the odd picture in some existing threads, or following along on a challenge, such as Call of Chaos (which I failed last year), or my much more successful efforts through this years 12 Months of Hobby Challenge (thanks Grotsmasha). I knew that if I was going to launch a WIP thread, I wanted it to be something special for me and a place where I could mix in my love of the lore and the hobby, while carving it out as a special place for the narrative side of modelling and gaming as I've loved to see in other threads, of which the work of The Observer, Apologist, Noctus Cornux, Marshal Rohr, Tyrannicide and many others that I've seen and can't recall over the 8 years (wow!) I've lurked and sporadically posted. The Iron Warriors have been my truest calling for most of that, but the Night Lords and Ultramarines have captured me along the way as well. I think I blame Storm of Iron, the Night Lords Trilogy, and the Ultramarines of the Heresy and First Tyrannic War for feeding those fires so long ago. These will be at least the initial forces that Ill be working on painting and converting to a reasonable level, and well see how far that takes me. There will be some overlap in posts here with those in the 12 Months of Hobby Thread, and some of the Liber challenges that are ongoing. Im not sure how far this will go, but Im eager to find out. My plan is to leave space below for additional Table of Contents to be added later, as I add different Warzones to this thread. I already have two in my head that I want to pursue and should offer some unique opportunities for hobbying and modelling. Who knows how long it will take me to reach there though. Warzones of a Hobbying Mind M41-M42 The Llagos Sector Enemies of the Emperor of Man! You have trespassed upon his dominion, and we are his vengeance come upon you. Captain Domician of the Ultramarines 5th Company at the Second Battle of Dracia. Come then, and let us test the measure of vengeance against hate. Unidentified Iron Warrior in response. Table of Contents Free Legions of the Long War; also known as the Heretic Astartes, Slaves to Darkness and the Tyrants of Llagos 7th Grand Battalion, Iron Warriors; Keepers of the Standing Stones The Talons of Twilight, Night Lords; The Bloodied Choir The Llagos Crusade; also known as Liberation Fleet TU-2020, and the Crusade of His Hand Returned to Redeem in Fire 5th Company, Ultramarines; Wardens of the Eastern Fringe
  5. Hello everyone! Today I start my Iron Warriors journey, hopefully this should help me keep motivated and productive. I have plans for a 1000pt list from what models I own so I have my target and even a game day towards the end of October I'm optimistically aiming for. Covid dependant as always these days. So here is what I'm starting with - 20 MkIII Marines and what will be a slightly modified Chaplain (he'll be a Chaos Lord). Just gonna swap out the Crozius for a Thunder Hammer, which I haven't done yet as you can see: I've used Duncan's speed painting IW video as a jumping off point as I want to try something different with this army. Normally I methodically (and slowly) make my way through my paint schemes. Undercoating, base coating, layer, wash etc... and so I wanted to have a faster painted army that still looked good on the table but was less effort to get it there. Behold! My Iron Warrior paint scheme: I need a bit more practice with the hazard stripes and to paint them at more of an angle I think. Anyway, as you can see it's mostly Duncan's paint recipe but with a few alterations that aren't really worth mentioning. I'm very happy with the results so I'm hoping to start churning the Marines out! As for basing I'm thinking of some mud and snow? Always like a bit of snow and it'll help lighten the model a bit. After this lot I have 20 Cultists to work on which I'll try and keep to the same speed painting* ethos. Plus they're cultists, so most likely won't be on the table long enough for people to really take a look at them *speed painting by my metric at any rate!
  6. One of the first threads we did when I got back into the hobby some four years ago, was a pretty well-received effort entitled "Vox Stellarum: True-Scaled Horus Heresy". It's exactly what it says on the tin. An array of Horus Heresy Astartes , Auxilia , Agents of the Sigillite , and other more esoteric miniatures done by myself and my longstanding collaborator, Umbral. Now, since then, we've developed a whole lot. And I don't just mean my actual painting and conversion skills [umbral's were already pretty ace to begin with]. I also mean in terms of our ability to *actually present* our efforts in thread form, as well as the narrative for the area of space our efforts take place in - which now spans roughly eleven thousand years ... So it seemed high time to go back to the Heresy , and re-present for a hopefully broadened audience , some of our work in that light. With better photographs. With that in mind - here's the first few of my Heresy-era truescales . To begin , the four Space Wolves I've done relatively recently : Space Wolves were the first force I did even semi-properly as a young lad , and as with many people of Scandinavian heritage ... the Vikings In Space element has always had a strong appeal. Even though my professional area of expertise (Indo-European theologian , with rather strong Nordic incorporations ) means I occasionally wince a bit when GW art or official miniatures mix up various different Runic scripts etc :P With these Wolves, I was looking to convey a sense that they were 'hunters', 'trackers' - hence the pointing, the auspex, and the misericordia . And also the highly mobile look of what might otherwise be static-appearing gunners. In terms of truescaling method, we use terminator legs. *All* the terminator legs! Which occasionally presents a bit of a difficulty, because frankly ... some of them just aren't posed especially dynamically - or there's so many we've done with a particular set of five that it becomes a challenge to work out how to do a 'novel' pose rather than yet another repeat. The Grave Warden legs are a particular problem in this regard, because while many of them are really quite cool - and certinly help spice things up in the Mk.III department relative to more 'ordinary' looking Cataphractii .. there's one or two legs in there that are just standing still, in an excessively wide leg stance that's .. difficult to work with. Still, I like to think I've done a reasonable job even here. Detail shot - showing the Misericordia ... and also the Raptor Imperialis pad. I figured that as this particular Astates was acting as a direct agent of the Throne in hunting down whatever it was that these chaps were pursuing, it made a certain sense for him to be carrying a Custodes blade for the purposes of personally administering the Emperor's Sanction. And, given the pad, it really drives home the loyalties and the authority of the pack. The Headhunter bolter's also good for the 'stalker' theme. Next up .. the 'Oddballs' - which is not a designation, just a characterization. Umbral had an idea awhile back for a 'Dungeons of Terra' sort of campaign, wherein various Imperial forces would be fending off the undermining incursion salients of Traitor forces into the eponymous dungeons during the course of the Siege. The campaign never got off the drawing board ... but I nevertheless wound up building a few miniatures in general service of the concept. They may show up elsewhere in our storylines. I say 'oddballs', because each one was a bit of a twist or a subversion on the more usually expected characterizations of given Legions. This is partially because each one was suffering in some fashion from 'Post-Human Traumatic Stress Disorder' - that particular form of mental illness which appears to have afflicted many Astartes during the Heresy due to .. well .. their established and comfortable loyalties and allegiances and place in the universe going out the window in an immense way; and alongside that the particular traumas of betrayal, the witnessing of horrific spectacles of the mass-mortality of their brethren (in the case of the Shattered Legions), and in some cases even their Primarchs ; and, in the case of the loyalists from Traitor Legions, the losing of their brothers and their own former lives in an entirely different way. But on with the show - As applies the Night Lord - Indraj - this is one of those aforementioned loyalists of a traitor legion origin ... and is showing the 'subversion' theme by being an incredibly direct and pulverizing combatant rather than a 'strike-from-the-shadows' sort in terms of his armament. There's nothing subtle about a thunder hammer and a rather large shield; and I like to think that the posing, with the raised head and gaze indicates that he's going after something rather larger than himself - the direct opposite of what we usually see from the Night Lords deliberately choosing to prey upon those weaker than themselves. Now, in terms of the name ... Felt I should highlight the Raptor Imperialis . The Salamander, meanwhile, is a bit of a tribute / injoke to the third man of Vox Stellarum, who's also a longstanding collaborator with my academic / theological work . Hence the heavy flamer [due to the meme that's gone around for ages around getting the flamer .. no, brother, the *heavy* flamer] , and also the thunder hammer - which is a rather more ... curious theological reference. This brings us on to the next two ... First up, a *very angry bird* - an XIXth Legionnaire who's quite clearly rather furious. As in, has eschewed the more customary caution of the Raven Guard in order to be blatantly throwing himself at the enemy whilst wielding a rather large axe. It seemed the best way to get across that he's expressing his trauma through rather incautious rage ; as opposed to the more studious approach of some other XIXth forces post-Isstvan , who favour their Legion's own habitual modus operandi of stealth and conservation of force given their limited numbers. Next , a Son of the Emperor : Now, the idea with this chap is that he's a demolitions expert. Hence all the grenades and other explosives he's got on his person - as well as the hand-held gadget that seemed ideal for a detonator. Signal'll be broadcast via the comms antenna on his backpack. In the actual Dungeons game, I'd intended to have tonnes of the Necromunda sprue grenade-piles and suchlike, as traps that he could remotely detonate to frustate the advance of the Traitors. Hence also his pointing posture - he's gesturing to where something is about to become rather more heavily geographically distributed. The bionic leg may, perhaps, suggest that he's run afoul of ordnance in-the-flesh earlier in his career - and is a tangible mark of his own , i guess you could say .. imperfection. Both in terms of physical form, but also in likely terms of tradecraft to lead to the injury in the first place. The more interesting thing about him, however, is that he was a close friend of a now-deceased (blown apart, in fact) Xth Legionnaire ... and feels that loss quite keenly. So much so in fact that he's effectively absorbed and started expressing some of the dead Marine's personality traits - giving voice to the dead , almost as if the spirit of his former comrade had been blown into him during the detonation. Certainly, the rosary of prayer-beads about his wrist speaks towards an Astartes who has moved in a rather more overtly religious direction than many in response to his trauma. Meanwhile, the ballistic apron [from the Iron Warriors tyrant siege terminators] seemed apt for a marine with his combat specialization - as it would absorb shrapnel etc. from things going off in front of him etc., help protect his fellows. There is one nod to the more 'traditional' IIIrd legion vibe, however (other than the bejeweled shoulderpad) - these two paired master crafted power-blades, which he'll be fully capable of utilizing as a matched pair of dueling weapons. Perhaps that's how he got that fine scar across his face, Prussian style. Anyway, that's the first eight of my Heresy-era Truescales posted ... there's 22 Astartes to go , plus a whole range of other miniatures from the same period [the Auxilia , Agents of the Sigillite , a rather impressive truescale Custodes , etc. etc. ] . And then there's Umbral's various efforts ... I'm hoping that a fresh start log will help me get some motivation back to do more in this era. And perhaps do some writing a la what I've managed for the Adamanticores [ Hara Barazaiti ] and Haunting Harii of Hvergelmir . Really 'bring things to life' and tie up a few ends for your presentation and enjoyment.
  7. Just a quick thread to see how you're all doing in 9th so far? My hobby butterfly is working it's way across the forums and heading to the warp. Does the IW trait, 'ignores benefits of cover' just work on the armour saves? That should work on the defended positions/heavy cover benefit to armour saves in melee, right? Any new Daemon engines added to the fold now they look like they might be great?
  8. "I have already conquered this Sector once - I can conquer it again." - Setal Berdax, Warsmith of the XCIIIrd Grand Company, Iron Warriors Hello and welcome to my Iron Warriors log. Despite being my most complete current painted army and the one I use most regularly, I don't think I've actually posted all that much about them in the chaos section here. Originally meant to be the army I was going to use for Horus Heresy, an ever growing love for these most bitter of Heretic Astartes, and lack of Heresy players among my regular gang have pushed me to expand them into Daemon Engines and other warp-touched toys. However, I also plan on keeping part of my army fairly free of corrupted units, so expect Heresy-era models too. In this thread, I plan on posting pictures of my models (both WIP conversions+painting and finished models), some lore, and hopefully my 9e Crusade advancement. I'm also planning some custom scenery, along with narrative rules for it, which will probably get posted here (as its main component will be a Daemon Forge) However, I'm a bit of a hobby butterfly, so don't expect this to be super regular ^^' Without further ado, here are some of my models - some a lot more recent than others: This is my Warsmith, Setal Berdax Master of Executions Obliterators: I was thinking about doing some renegade Iron Hands as the warp touched part of my army, but I just like the colour scheme of the IV legion too much My Fabius Bile counts as (finished a month before the new model ^^) Warpsmith Just realised I haven't yet got photos of the finished product with lenses and basing for this one ^^' Anyway, I'm not going to be trying to complete these to my best standard from now on: what I absolutely need is to get through some of my backlog, so I don't mind a bit of messiness and lack of best technique Anyway, comments and critiques welcome and appreciated :D
  9. Hi Brothers I love the look of breachers, so am planning on having at least 20 in both my Iron Warriors and Imperial fists armies (As well as some Iron Hands breachers to go with some immortals as an allied detachment). I've been trying to read up on the tactica for both these armies, but needless to say with 60 pages each spanning multiple years/editions/points changes/FAQ's, I'm a little lost on what would be decent list wise. For the Iron Warriors I was looking at 2 10 man squads, in dreadclaws, or 1 20 man in a Daddy Claw. No specific RoW in mind here, the theme was going to be boarding assault (so Termies in a Caestus, some tacticals with chainswords in a claw, that sort of thing For the Fists 2 10 man squads, and a unit of at least 10 Phalanx Warders (maybe 20, or x2 10 marines). Was thinking stone gauntlet RoW here, and a storm eagle or two (or lots of landraiders). Praetor was gonna be all boarding shield/hammer with a command squad of power axe/shield guys in a scouting proteus. So my question to your guys and gals, why is a stupid idea and I'm doing it all wrong. What would you guys do? Explain your thoughts behind your actions too please,

UNIDENTIFIED ELEMENTS OF XX LEGION NOTATION: Long before the VIIth Grand Battalion declared their dominion over the Llagos Sector on the Eastern Fringe, references to a VIIth Grand Battalion of the IVth Legion are recorded in multiple incident and combat reports in Imperial records, dating back to at least M34. Based on these, the power of this specific heretic warband has waxed and waned over the past several millenia. However, I suspect that they have never been so dangerous than the present threat they represent to His Imperium. Although the extent of their direct control over the Llagos Sector is unclear, what they do not garrison is nonetheless beyond Imperial control. In some cases, this is because other Heretic Astartes have claimed worlds as their own - part of what appears to be an alliance of traitors and murderers who have declared themselves the Tyrants of Llagos, which I have identified where possible. In other cases, worlds have fallen into anarchy, or to the many others that beset His realm. May He watch over the faithful in this, their hour of need. - Acolyte Ramhost ADDENDUM: Further research by my agents into the VIIth Grand Battalion have failed to identify the warband's leadership, but have still procured valuable information ahead of the Imperial reconquest - whenever the forces are gathered. I admit, I was expecting another titular warlord, but it appears that the VIIth are led by a group of individuals who are referred to as a Triumvirate. Their exact identities are unknown, but the information relayed suggests that each of these three traitors have warred on His Imperium since the time of the Horus Heresy. I find it hard to believe that such ancient warriors could still haunt us, but must admit that this possibility gives me more cause for dread than the size of their present holdings and armies. I have read what little information is available on the Heresy, at least that which I am privy to. On what fields of that bloody struggle did they battle? Did they fire upon Holy Terra itself in their war aginst Him? How many wars have they fought since those ancient times? How many of His servants have they bled and slain? To liberate the faitfhul, we must overcome these ancient evils? - Scribe Ramhost (Note: Executed for Cowardice, by order of Inquisitor Grace Magellan.) ORIGINS The 416th Expeditionary Fleet and the Katan Cluster The current VIIth Grand Battalion of the Iron Warriors did not exist until the closing days of the Great Crusade, and its founding was far from auspicious. What would eventually become the VIIth Grand Battalion, tied by blood and fire to Warsmith Agathocles, was initially a group of seperate companies which made up the 416th Expeditionary Fleet of the Imperium. By the command of Perturabo, the Warsmith Suphur Ghamarand led the 416th Expeditionary Fleet struck out to conquer the twelve systems of the Katan Cluster, then held by the Synat Alliance consisting of several xenos species and humans. Initially, the campaign began with promise. The 416th arrived in secret on the edges of the Cluster and monitored the systems, dispatching listening probes and small strike craft to test the Alliances' defences. After several weeks of monitoring and planning, the Warsmith struck. The first strike came to Katan V, the fifth system of the Katan Cluster. Although not host to a significant concentration of military assets, the three hospitable worlds in the system acted as the bread basket for the region - primarily producing the edible foodstuffs of the xenos races. Calculating that it would drive a wedge between the defenders, and leave the systems with a significantly larger human populace ready for compliance at the end of the campaign, Warshmith Gharamand would begin the cull of the xenos even before the Cluster fell. The initial strike left Katan V in Imperial hands, but the IV Legion had no use for alien agriculture. Orbital bombardment levelled the world for later renewal and resettlement. From there, Katan IV and IX fell quickly to secondary strikes. An attempted stand at Katan III by the Alliance resulted in a heavy fleet action, but the defenders withdrew before losing their most capable warships. Driving further into the Cluster, fleet combat and boarding actions devastated the Alliance that, by then, threatened to fall apart to internal fracturing. The Warsmith's plan was proceeding as intended, and the early loss of Katan V and its food production was taking its toll on the aliens. Forced to ration their foods and distribute it to their fighting forces, the alien's civilian populations were starving while they watched the humans enjoy a stable supply of their own foods with envy. Eventually, after fighting through Alliance defences on Katan II in a bloody meat grinder, the Warsmith determined to end the Alliance and claim the Cluster for his Legion. Confident that a concurrent assault on Katan I, their capital system, and Katan XI, where sensors indicated they had concentrated the majority of their remaining spaceborn vessels, would be the end of meaningful resistance, Warsmith Gharamand divided his forces. Disregarding the concerns of his sub-commanders, he deployed his ground troops to the capital world, fourth planet of the Katan I system, and left some vessels in the rear guard, while the majority of the Expeditionary vessels advanced to finish the Alliance fleet. The Battle of Katan I.IV Warsmith Gharamand ordered the 93rd, 114th, 173rd, and 201st Line Companies to the Battle of Katan I.IV, supported by the 93rd and 100th Armoured Company, alongside elements of the Imperial Army and the Tagmata Pisara of the Mechanicum. Receiving little orbital support from the rearguard ships, the leadership of the ground forces were experienced and capable commanders, and Gharamdn was confident it would not be needed. Unidentified Iron Warrior in the Katan Compliance Securing the planned landing zones with little resistance, the Iron Warriors advanced to the major urban areas - rivalling some small Hive cities of the Imperium - expecting fierce resistance from the Alliance. What they were not expecting was to face a resistance primarily led by the human soldiery. Amongst these troops, also fought horrors of alien science - gene wrought human and alien warriors in crude and hulking imitation of the Astartes, clad in primitive armour but possessing a monstrous strength and fortitude. The Iron Warriors fought with the bitter determination of their Legion despite facing mounting casulaties, and slowly pushed into the cities. The initial days of the planets subjugation were a blurr of close-ranged firefights and fierce melee against the defenders, but the Iron Warriors broke into the cities. What they found was infighting. Their advance had broken the morale of the defenders, and some of the aliens had turned upon the humans - even as they had fought to defend each other. Hunger turned to madness as the defenders savaged one and another and the aliens gorged themselves on human flesh. Former allies massacred themselves while fighting and dying en masse to the guns of the Iron Warriors, but through sheer weight of numbers the IV Legion became bogged down. It was then the enemy fleet struck. Alliance warships, their systems powered down and signatures hidden in the asteroid ring of Katan I.II, revealed themselves. The rearguard ships notified the ground forces, and sent a message to the 416th, but it was too late - reinforcements would be days away at the earliest. Swiftly and inexorably, the Alliance ships advanced and swept the Expeditionary rearguard away. The ground forces on Katan I.IV dug in where they could, tunnelling into the earth beneath the cities and fortifying trenchworks and bunkers where necessary to survive the coming bombardment. For many, it would not be enough. From orbit, laser fire, heavy ordnance, and all manner of radioactive munitions fell upon the planet. When the ships of the 416th returned to Katan I.IV, and annihilated the last vestiges of the Alliance Fleet, it was too late. Over three thousand of the Iron Warriors were dead, their allies devastated and the cities and human population of the planet were ash. Warsmith Gharamand was aghast and called a council of his surviving commanders. Revealing that the ship concentrations in Katan XI were a refugee flotilla filled with starving and half-dead aliens preparing to escape the Cluster, as opposed to the remaining warships of the Alliance as believed, the Warsmith was relieved of his command and executed by the surviving leadership of the Iron Warriors ground forces. Founding In the records of the Imperium of Man, Warsmith Ghamarand was listed as Killed in Action in the Katan Campaign. In his place, command fell to Captain Rhota Agathocles - the most senior surviving commander of the ground forces of the 416th Expeditionary Fleet. Captain Agathocles led the reorganization of the remaining Iron Warriors elements, and their depleted Imperial Army and Taghmata support units into a force that could continue the compliance. Embarking to the fleet before the ruins of Katan I were fully captured, Agathocles ordered the remainder of the planet be devastated and the fleet move on. Towing the ruined Alliance warships and refugee vessels from Katan XI, Agathocles used the wrecks as space born ordnance to throw at the remaining Alliance worlds. Where further vessels were encountered, Agathocles and the 416th launched savage boarding actions to capture the vessels and hurl them on the defenders' worlds - a mockery of the bombardment they themselves had endured. After several further weeks on campaign and the destruction of the last holdout bastions, Captain Agathocles reported to Perturabo that the Katan Cluster was brought into compliance, and received new orders to leave a garrison, and embark on other campaigns. These campaigns, deleted from Imperial records, would see the fall of the crocodilian Khrinti Empire alongside Night Lord raiding parties, the defence of the Tiago Expanse with the Ultramarines against a rampaging Ork Waagh!, the fall of the Tyrant of Bures brought about with the Dark Angels and the Luna Wolves, and other actions besides. Eventually, Perturabo solidified the 416th Expeditionary Force as a single legion fighting force in the VIIth Grand Battalion under the elevated Warsmith Agathocles. It was then, with his new command and title, that Agathocles was ordered to regroup with the 125th Expeditionary Fleet for prosecution of a campaign against the Hrud, in the Sak'trada Deeps. HISTORY Heresy Legionary Khorious Rex, VIIth Grand Battalion OlympiaFor many Heretic Astartes warbands borne out of the old Legions, the Dropsite Massacre of Istvaan V represents a clear breaking point in their loyalties from the Imperium to the Dark Gods, there was no such clear change for the VIIth Grand Battalion. They, like much of their legion, had already felt forsaken by the Imperium they were building before that battle. Rather, the VIIth Grand Battalion had been committed to the Legion's cause at the burning of Olympia. By their Lord Perturabo's direction, they had waged genocide against their own world. Dispatched to tear down the city of Kademmos, the VIIth Grand Battalion had undertaken their mission with limited support from other Iron Warriors units, just the 182nd Line Company, and the 94th Artillery Company. Together, the VIIth and their supporting units tore down the city walls, and marched forward. Although the Iron Warriors were already known for their brooding and paranoid character, their mood darkened as they cleared the city. Growing reports that some units in both the VIIth Grand Battalion and the supporting units were not firing on the populace turned into reports of stand-offs within the city. Warsmith Agathocles, committed to executing his Primarch's orders but already shaken by the order to burn his world, ordered his forces halt and took to the city in-person to verify the reports. In the central plaza, he met with a unit of the 182nd Line Company who were accused of refusing their orders. After a long debate, where it could not be known if the 182nd were on the verge of standing down or the Warsmith on the verge of turning his back on the Primarch, the whine of falling artillery shells broke the tension and drew the lines of battle. Unknown to the Warsmith, a similar standoff had erupted in his siege encampment. Concerned that the artillery could shell their commander and forces in the city, the VIIth attempted to disarm the 94th Artillery Company and sieze their weapons. The 94th resisted and firefights erupted in the encampment, while artillery loosed on the Warsmith in the city. Kademmos erupted in bolter fire as the warriors of the VIIth and the 182nd fought each other and amonst themselves. Warsmith Agathocles and his bodyguard, pinned in the enveloping fire of the 182nd units, were relieved by Captain Xenophon and the handful of trustworthy squads he had rallied to his side. Inevitably, Kademmos fell, and the 182nd and the 94th companies were wiped out - their equipment and survivors absorbed into Agathocles' command. By the time the VIIth Grand Battalion fought the loyalists at Istvaan V, they had already chosen their side. Positioned around the Urgall Depression to face the Salamanders Legion, they butchered them without remose or regret - or even anger. They fought with a numbness of a universe turned on its head. The trauma of Olympia had left many in the VIIth hollow, morose, and resigned to their Legion's loyalties. For many, the shadow of their treachery would weigh on them and, in the rumours of the IVth Legion, border too nearly on regret. The Horus Heresy After Istvaan, the VIIth fought in a number of campaigns against the loyalists, but lacked the zeal to distinguish themselves among the traitors. The VIIth fought at Phall but were barely acknowledged in the honour rolls of the Iron Warriors. They fought at Dormire against a loyalist group of the Alpha Legion and in the Valens system against the Ultramarines. They fought on the nine moons of Kallorn against Raven Guard survivors harassing the Warmaster's Fleet, and at Caleb's Rest against the Blood Angels. On, and on, in bloody rebellion they fought. Although the VIIth was absent from the great battles of Tallarn, and from the Battle of Phall, they did not pass through the Heresy without great losses. Having fought through a number of loyalist forces, and having suffered for it, the 416th Expeditionary Fleet eventually came upon the bastion worlds of the Eridean Conglomerate for resupply and rearmament. Eventually, they fought their way to Terra and back to the bulk of their legion. (To be added) Retreat to the Eye Legion Wars The Bachannal Devastation Hunted Old Allies Renewed Black Crusaders The Valens Insurrection (Ongoing Kill Team Campaign) The Martyrs Crusades The Pact of the Standing Stones and the Triumvirate The 10th Black Crusade and the Conflict of Helica The Time After the Rift When the Great Rift tore across the galaxy, the Iron Warriors marched with Abaddon across the devastated Imperium. Having fought at Cadia, and out of the ring of Imperial defences encompassing the Eye of Terror, the VIIth Grand Battalion refused to risk a return to the transdimensional hell that had been their prison for ten thousand years. Now, countless lifetimes after their treachery had condemned them to damnation, they would claim a dominion in realspace, and rule, and fight, and die as they had in the days of the Legion. Abaddon and his forces would spread through the stars, but the VIIth did not care to relive their days of raiding and piracy. They did not care to strip worlds of life and steal away populations as they had been forced to. No - they would gather their armies and carve an empire as they had done long ago. Their black crusade across the stars followed the edges of the Rift as they sought a domain far from the focus of the Imperium, where they could stake their claim and build the strength to grow. Eventually, after crossing the galaxy and savaging countless worlds, they found a territory that fit their mark - the Llagos Sector. On the edge of the Eastern Fringe, with stars in the Imperium proper and the Imperium Nihilus, the Llagos Sector was well positioned and within striking distance of plentiful enemies with whom the VIIth owed a blood debt. Through dark pacts they could cross the Rift with impunity, while their foes would be confined to only ever half their domain. Far from the Emperor's light, it had also remained under-developed, despite its rich resources and impoverished but significant populations. These would be the metals and fuel for their warmachine, and the willing converts and recruits to the VIIth's armies. The invasion of the Llagos Sector, when it came, began in fire. (To be added) Reign of Tyrants One of the first campaigns beyond the Llagos Sector undertaken by the VIIth Grand Battalion struck at the worlds of Dal'hammar. A system cut off from the Imperium for nearly a century, and subjugated by a cabal of the Thousand Sons, the Iron Warriors detected a distress signal sent out by an Imperial resistance on the primary world. The Thousand Sons were digging for an ancient xenos technology they called a 'psychic nexus'. As xenos and Imperial forces converged on the system, the Iron Warriors sent out a force to investigate. (Ongoing - Warhammer 40k Campaign with Friends) In the years after they conquered the Llagos Sector, the VIIth Grand Battalion have struck out at the wider Imperium, aiming to throw the forces of the Corpse Emperor off balance and to prevent any gathering of forces that could strike back against their new dominion. When the Heralds of Devastation space marine chapter found their missing flagship, the Inviolate Rage, in the Voltronus system beyond the Eastern Fringe, the Iron Warriors dispatched a strike force to impede their progress and weaken the marshalled Imperial forces. (Ongoing - 12 Months of Hobby Forum Campaign) Now, after long years of their bloody reign over the Llagos Sector, the VIIth Grand Battalion have built up their defences and await the oncoming Imperial fleet sent to drive them out of their dominion. Many regiments of the Imperial Guard, as well as warriors of the Ultramarines and others besides have sent forces to assault them. What comes of the Llagos Crusade, and the strength of the VIIth Grand Battalion to oppose it, remains to be seen ... Having fought under his command since the Horus Heresy, the Third is as much a weapon in the hands of Warsmith Xenophon as it is an extension of his will. Fourth Line Company The Fourth Line Company of the VIIth Grand Battalion is the personal command of Warsmith Tullaris and the largest of the extant companies operating in the VIIth. Fifth Line Company The Fifth Line Company boasts the highest concentration of armoured assets from the VIIth Grand Battalion, having become an amalgamation of surviving, and acquired armour and vehicles through the long centuries of warfare and fluctuating size of the VIIth. Their long focus on armoured warfare has been refined over the years, and they often form a leading element to any major offensive. (To add) Sixth Line Company The Sixth Line Company (To add) Seventh Line Company The Seventh Line Company was reconstituted by the VIIth just prior to the 10th Black Crusade. This refounding, following shortly after the swearing of the Pact of the Standing Stones and the forced incorporation of a rival warband, reversed the slide of the Grand Battalion into a loose band of disparate raiders. Originally, the Seventh Line Company was disbanded after the company suffered staggering casulties at the Iron Cage. (To add) Eighth Line Company The Eighth Line Company is a newly reconstituted element of the old VIIth. The Eighth consists almost entirely of two types of space marines: those mongrel newborn space marines created through a bastardization of malefic ritual and ancient science, and newly traitorous firstborn space marines who turned from the Imperium in the dark days after the Great Rift tore the galaxy asunder. Those few marines who do not fit into these two archetypes, are generally veterans of long service to the Triumvirate who act as much as their enforcers as informants, testing the marines of the Eighth until they prove themselves or break. Many in the VIIth Grand Battalion look down on those in Eighth Company as lesser shadows of the veterans of the long war and whisper that the company is full of the weakling sons of Dorn and Guilliman. Previously in service during the days of the Great Crusade, the Eighth was broken up to reinforce the other Line Companies after vicious casualties were suffered by the Iron Warriors during the Siege of Terra and at the Iron Cage, alongside the Seventh Line Company. Helot Soldiery Jandri Helots Armies (To be added) Numerean Irregular Militia The Numerean Militia are frequently deployed alongside the VIIth Grand Battalion as fodder and support troops. They have filled this role since the populace of Numer were enslaved by an Iron Warriors invasion in M34. Thousands of years later, the descendants of those captives have embraced the anarchic violence of their masters and forgotten the cause of the damnation. Llagos Helot Armies The Iron Warriors have forced a number of worlds and populations into armed servitude, ready to exact the will of the VIIth when the Iron Warriors themselves are unable or unwilling to do so. Of these forces marshalled for resisting Imperial forces as they attempt to retake the Llagos Sector, a number of them revolve around obscure links to their worlds of origin, and often, to the strange mythos of those worlds. The 32nd 'Crowborn' Foot Rifles, for example, a force often stationed throughout the Benkar Cluster and garrisoning less vital deployments, owing to their weaker constitutions (a result of generations of genetic damage from radioactive exposure) and poor training, based much of their milita culture around myths of the Great Crow who soared the stars in a veil of purest night. It was said that the Crowborn tracked the migrations of the Great Crow by the worlds upon which abhuman breeds more closely resembled avian mutations. Previously subjected to fierce persecution by the Inquisition, this creed has since grown rampant in areas of the region where mutation and abhuman populations are more concentrated. COMBAT DOCTRINE Continuing the combat doctrine of their legion, the VIIth Grand Battalion are masters of siege warfare and regularly employ armoured assaults to punch through enemy defensive lines. Barring an armoured assault, the VIIth Grand Battalion is used to mass-theatre warfare and attrition fighting through long years of endless warfare and uncountable casulaties. With masses of fodder troops and penal soldiery, and the numbers of their Legion forces at an all time strength, the VIIth are prepared to force a terrible resistance against any who would dislodge them from their holdings. Unlike many of their legion, the Iron Warriors of the VIIth Grand Battalion have also shown a particular willingness for fighting in limited number and confined spaces - whether that be in ship-to-ship boarding actions, or the fighting of elite sapper troops tunneling beneath fortified enemy lines. Arising from the personal methods of Warsmith Agathocles dating back to the Katan Compliance, the forces of the VIIth are equally as deadly from afar, as up close. 11. It's about time I put up my Iron Warriors WIP's Here is my Chaos Lord for my Iron Warriors, I've got a lot built and undercoated but what to build at the moment so looking to get some characters into my force. This is the early WIP for my lord in terminator armour. I've got some ideas for the body and the left arm is looking good in mock up. I'm not sure on the right arm I was considering a combi melta raised to the sky slightly or an arm with a hand either holding a primaris head or a skull or auspex etc. I'm open to some suggestions
  12. From left to right, back to front, these guys are: Dark Imperium/Know No Fear Boltgun Plague Marine Shadowspear Chaos Space Marine with a headswap and boltgun Dark Imperium/Know No Fear Plasma Gun Plague Marine Plague Champion made from a Know No Fear Plague Marine w/Boltgun and a First Strike Plague Champion's power pack/plasma gun and power fist First Strike Plague Marine w/Khorne Berzerker power pack First Strike Plague Marine w/Know No Fear Plague Marine's arm and Khorne Berzerker Power Pack Know No Fear Plague Marine with First Strike Blight Launcher Opinions? Thoughts? They'll be painted in IW colors in due time.
  13. So Guys, I have some Missile launcher and autocannon squads. How do you guys show these are Iron Havocs and not regular heavy support squads?
  14. I'm converting my many old metal 3rd edition Obliterators into Iron Warriors Cataphractii Terminators. I have 10 that will be my Tyrant Siege Terminators to deepstrike in with Perturabo. Then I have another 15 that will be Legion Terminators, and because they just look so cool with those pauldrons and have that 4++, will be Cataphractii style. What do people like to load their Cataphractiis with? I was thinking just the standard combi-bolters and power weapons, perhaps with a chainfist on the sergeants. But what power weapon mix is optimal? Is it better to have 3 units of 5 each with a task in mind? Or....magnets? When I get some painted I'll post them to my gallery. The Tyrants turned out pretty neat.
  15. In the spirit of wanting to get back into engaging with Warhammer 40.000 again I've decided to try and play Kill Team, the smaller scale seems to make it an easier cell to my buddies in the local area so I can actually get games in. It also, hopefully, gives me the excuse to plan and execute a whole project and have something "finished" at the end of it. A feeling that is as elusive to me as it is to many other wargamers out there I'm sure. I settled on Chaos for several reasons. For one I am a fan of chaos and have played them in the past, meaning there are plenty of bitz around to try and make something unique. Also with chaos I never feel any reluctance to fight against anyone else based on any narrative preferences, I am one of those that never liked when my Ultramarines fought against say, Salamanders. The new Chaos Space Marine kit is also really nice, and I've not bought anything GW since before those came out. So I dug up an old gift card I got for christmas and ordered a box. Iron Warriors were picked largely because I really like the scheme, and the industrial theme works well with the miniatures I had around that could work like cultists. I am still waiting for the big boys, so I've been doing some slow work on some bases and the cultists.
