  1. "Put your trust only in the weapons you bear; for even those you consider closest might harbour thoughts of malice and treason under the familiar visage of a trusted brother." Unnamed Word Bearer Legionary. Unidentified firearm. Speculated to be a Khaladine pattern bolt rifle. Torso plate bears superficial damage, likely from previous engagement.
  2. Hi all, I've been thinking of re-starting my WB army for a while now and I've had a list in the works for a few weeks, so with the release of the new points values I've quickly readjusted it and here it is. I want the army to be fluffy and fit with the WB lore, but also be good enough to usually win friendly games. Thankfully I think the dark apostle, cultist horde, possessed and daemonic allies are all both fluffy and good in-game. Word Bearers Battalion Detachment – 1715 points, -2CP Pre-Game Stratagems Daemonkin Ritualists Specialist Detachment (-1CP) Apostle of the Dark Council (-1CP) HQ Dark Apostle, Warlord (Master of the Union), Benediction of Darkness, Soultearer Portent - 80 Daemon Prince w/ 2x talons, intoxicating elixir, death hex – 165 Master of Possessions w/ Cursed Earth, Infernal Power – 95 Troops 10x Autogun Chaos Cultists – 60 10x Autogun Chaos Cultists – 60 10x Autogun Chaos Cultists – 60 10x Autogun Chaos Cultists – 60 Elites 2x Dark Disciples - 10 8x Khorne Berserkers w/ chainaxes and icon of wrath – 154 1x Greater Possessed – 65 10x Possessed – 200 10x Possessed – 200 Heavy Support 5x Havocs w/ 4 chaincannons, chainaxe and boltgun on champion – 166 2x Obliterators – 210 Venomcrawler – 130 Slaanesh Daemons Patrol Detachment – 285 points, -2CP HQ Herald of Slaanesh w/ symphony of pain – 55 Troops 10x Daemonettes – 70 Elites 2x Fiends – 80 2x Fiends – 80 Total - 2000 points, 8CP Everything except the berserkers has the mark of slaanesh, mainly so that daemon units can benefit from the herald's locus, but also to use endless cacophony on the havocs and oblits when necessary. Handily, the free slaanesh prayer for the apostle will allow him to keep up with the rest of the pack when they charge. The plan is fairly standard - the possessed squads rush forwards with the HQs and the herald, all of them buffing each other and using stratagems that buff them even further - with the Slaanesh locus giving the ability to advance and charge, a turn 2 charge should be pretty much guaranteed. This should be enough to destroy the heart of most armies. The cultists and daemonettes sit on objectives and perform actions, and the havocs and oblits stay in the backfield and provide fire support (both of them can move and still shoot if necessary). The venomcrawler, berserkers and fiends are there mainly to provide target saturation and overwhelm the opposing army with melee units running towards them. The fiends have the added bonus of preventing falling back, locking units in combat with the possessed and ensuring they can't be shot at. With their high movement, if the herald advances far enough the fiends might still be in her aura to advance and charge, which means the potential to get in some first turn charges that that tie up key units (although I'm not banking on this). Feedback appreciated! I'm open to pretty much any changes so long as they fit the lore of the WB. Mainly, I'm not sure about my shooting capacity - the havocs are good at anti-horde and the oblits at anti-tank/heavy infantry, but having only one unit to deal with everything might be a bit risky. But I'm not really sure what else I could add or what to take away to pay for it (or if its even necessary).
  3. Hail Brothers, I'm in the process of building and painting my space marine army, but have always loved the Word Bearers for some reason. The first group to turn traitor is just a fascinating prospect, and I want to play them on the tabletop eventually. I'm curious as to what you heretics think would be a good way to start this army, and where I should go with it. I'm not looking to play in tournaments, but I want something with a good bit of fluff (I know it's hard to make a WB army without fluff, but regardless haha) that can win some good games. I'm not one who enjoys soup armies, so I would like to primarily stick to WB if possible (Except for demons, since I know it's their schtick). I'll also play them as my killteam going forward, so advice on that front would be cool too! Thanks so much, you beautiful heretics!
  4. So I am assembling a wordbearers force and I have a blood slaughterer of Khorne, a Contemptor dread, a Venomcrawler and a disco lord already in the way of demon engines. I have picked up the decimation force battlebox and I’m about to start work on the forge/maulerfiend. Bearing in mind that it looks like they are going up to WS3/ BS3, what do you guys think would be the sensible option for building it. I definitely prefer the forgefiend model, but it seems like Maulerfiends are where it’s at for CSM at the moment. Am I likely to be gimping myself going with my preference or are the Forgefiends actually an alright choice, and if they are OK what dot you think are the best guns for them?
  5. I present for you my recently completed Heldrake, I've soent the last six months on this beast of a model, it's been thoroughly enjoyable to be fair, I hope you'll think that I've done it justice. I made some slight alterations to the 'drake adding some Maulerfiend tentacles to bulk out the tail, and reposing the rear legs to mount it on the column crowing over the charred remains of its latest victim. It's taken approximately six months start to finish although there was a marked drop off in work rate in late summer due to heat and the truncated cricket season. This is also the first thing I've finished with Artis Opus brushes and I'd say they are easily thre best I've used so far, will be looking to pick up some more of those. I did use thier drybrush method at times, although using makeup brushes, which worked well, I'll be looking into how i can incorporate more of tht into future projects. Anyway, enough words, let's have some pictures! Thanks for looking, let me know what you think!
  6. I know that traditionally Word Bearers can not be taken as loyalists, however while I was reading today I noticed that the Orphans of War row specifically says that it is to represent loyalist elements of otherwise traitor legions, and then that this row "may only be taken by" and then goes on to list Word Bearers amongst the other traitor legions. If using this rite of war could one make the rules argument for taking a loyalist Word Bearers force? The in-universe explanation would simply be that these were morally-deficient loyalists willing to do anything to keep their true loyalties hidden until they determined the time was right. (The HH obviously becoming the "right time" to reveal their true convictions) But I am wondering more specifically if the Rite of War's rules would create an exception to the Word Bearers original "traitors only" rule, or if it is likely just a mistake and tough luck. Interested to hear people's thoughts.
  7. Greetings Bearers of the Word, Does the Diabolist gain preferred enemy on shooting attacks? The text in Horus Heresy book 5 states "The Diabolist gains the daemon special rule and preferred enemy added to all their close combat attacks (in addition to any other weapon effects)." Does the text in the brackets mean he also gains preferred enemy on shooting attacks? - or solely during combat?
  8. So, here's the deal. Tomorrow, I'm going up to my FLGS to adopt a Fiend box. It's been sitting on their shelf all by its lonesome all this time, and it needs some friends, so I'm buying it, taking it home and building it for my Word Bearers. The question is... how should I build it? Should I go for the sheer visceral joy of having two Thunder Hammer equivalents and a swarm of mechanical tendrils, or perhaps the Thunder Hammer equivalents and a pair of magma cutters to make quick work of tougher foes? Maybe a set of Ectoplasma Cannons - three, of course - to burn through the enemy in the name of the Architect of Fate, or perhaps a pair of Hades Autocannons to cut through hordes like butter and a daemonic maw in case it gets into melee?
  9. Hi all, I am trying to write army lists and have identified a large number of problems that is causing me an enormous amount of grief when trying to work out the rules. I am not aware of any FAQs that have dealt with these problems and would appreciate a 'community response' to test the water. As far as I can tell, all of these issues fall into the grey murky area of determining RAI when the RAW is not explicitly clear. 1. What is a Fortification Allied Detachment? Angel's Wrath, Armoured Spearhead and Orbital Assault all ban the use of 'Fortification Allied Detachments'. I am not sure if this is supposed to be a ban on Allies, or Fortifications, or both. The Age of Darkness FOC shows that Fortifications occupy a separate Detachment rather than being part of the Primary or Allied, but refers to it as a 'Fortification Detachment' without use of the word 'Allies'. TL;DR: Can I use Allied Detachments alongside Angel's Wrath, Armoured Spearhead or Orbital Assault? 2. Can Word Bearers use the Orphans of War Rite? According to the flavour text, the Rite of War is not Loyalist-only despite that being the core theme and there is nothing to say that you cannot use it as Traitors. The Limitations then go on to say that it can be used by Word Bearers. However, all Word Bearers Detachments are Traitors, and so there is an argument that all Word Bearers units are 'Traitor-only' by default and hence banned. The alternative view is that Traitor-only units refers to the little Eye of Horus mark, which would then allow the Rite to use Gal Vorbak and even special characters because no WB unit has that mark. 2 parter-question then: Can the Rite be used as Traitors, and are WB banned as Traitor-only despite being listed as OK in another clause? 3. Do Rite-induced restrictions on Infantry also apply to Jump Infantry? More of a RAI question, because the RAW seems unfortunately clear. The rulebook clearly states that Jump Infantry are just Infantry, with a few extra rules. Various Rites of War place limits on Infantry such as requiring them to be in a Transport. Jump Infantry cannot be Transported by any non-LoW vehicle in the game, meaning that they cannot possibly satisfy these requirements. Are they simply not allowed in Rites such as Armoured Spearhead, Armoured Breakthrough or Last of the Serrated Sun? Very grateful for any opinions on these. I am very keen on playing a Jump-heavy list with some Allied Militia or Daemons, but almost every Rite seems to ban it somehow when applied strictly. Just trying to test the water and see how the community feels about these conclusions.
  10. “Have you come to gloat at me again? Or have I been awakend to do battle for once?” He let out a pained, barking laugh, the sort that would haunt whatever unfortunate mortal could hear it. It was fortunate then, that his guest was no mere mortal. “Or perhaps you’ve come for advice to a problem even you cannot solve, my wayward apprentice.” “This time you are lucky. We are to do battle against loyalist forces. You will be able to unleash your wrath upon whatever poor souls dare to stand against you. Or perhaps you will die, and finally be freed of my presence. Does that please you?” There was a smug sort of contempt in his voice for the ancient one. “I would slay you where you stood were I able. It is hatred that keeps me alive, trapped as I am in this sarcophagus. The one you forced me into. It is hatred for you that keeps my mind clear from the madness that torments others in similar fates. I wonder, is this what it is like, to be touched by the Blood God? How his worshippers feel?” He let out another hideous peel of laughter at this, pain clearly heard within his voice. “Know that I alone will be the one to stand over your corpse one day. Your head crushed beneath my boot like the traitorous dog you are.” “We will see. I have bested you before, and I shall do so again, if I must. But you know the Host will not follow you. Not anymore. They follow me now as their Apostle. You have been replaced, mentor.” He looked over the wretched thing, trapped in the dreadnought’s sarcophagus. The pitiful creature he once called his mentor before usurping his position from him and wrenching control of the Host for his own glory. He despised him so.
  11. Old content here in the OP, can disregard, I'm keeping it here to edit/modify it in the future. The first page is discussion re: a discarded idea. Had this thread moved to WIP forum to be merged with my other WIP thread. Thank you for looking! Currently writing up a bunch of narrative for fun as well, hope to share that soon. Much more to come!
  12. We Bear the Word Clothed in darkness, gilded in fervor By aethyr bound, an unbroken creed Through our faith we are known For we are the Ebon Word We Bear the Word of the Warmaster Chosen to serve under the broken Legion Long have we toiled without our Lord's eyes upon us Long have our brothers denounced us as traitors For we are the Ebon Word We Bear the Word of Lorgar Our pact is hidden, our blood runs true We are a twisting blade in the hands of the Despoiler We guard the Eightfold Path For we are the Ebon Word We Bear the Word of Chaos Bound to break the dreams of Man Our travels vast, our works unending The red hands of Chaos reach out For we are the Ebon Word
  13. Soooo, I picked up that one-to-a-box, character-priced Noise Marine, and got to thinking. Maybe he'd make a good Mark of Slaanesh Dark Apostle? I've been considering doing Word Bearers for a bit anyway, so why not? The reason I'm putting this in here is because, as much as the one model is done, I've got like 20 Cultists to paint up for this, so this is a WIP project. If mods have a problem, go ahead and move it elsewhere, whatever. Note I've added another decal to his leg, a white Star of Chaos, and added 'Ardcoat over all of his armor to scratchproof and give a shiny look like Word Bearers should have, since taking these pictures. He'll be shiny and have the extra Star in any future family photos, though.
  14. So, I've heard for a little while now that Word Bearers are the objectively worst Codex: CSM faction. After building an army of them (small and supported by a Chaos Knight, but still) I'm seeing why. Upon looking into it... yeah, we aren't the best. Their Legion Trait is literally ATSKNF. Granted, it's fluffy (fanatics, plus we're probably the only Legion which is still mostly a Legion instead of splintered warbands) and it's nice to have, but come on. Advance and charge same turn? Yes, please, I even abandoned the World Eaters trait for my Khorne stuff just because I like advance and charge so much better. World Eaters and Emperor's Children get Berzerkers and Noise Marines, respectively, as troops, on top of bonus attacks (World Eaters) or fight first (Emperor's Children). Black Legion get Assault for free on Rapid Fire weapons, Alpha Legion get the Raven Guard Chapter Tactic... and Word Bearers get ATSKNF as theirs. Whoop-dee-doo. It is the woooooorst. Granted, we do get neat stuff, in the Voice of Lorgar Warlord Trait (good for Dark Apostles) and the Cursed Crozius (again, good for Dark Apostles) but in general, they're... actually only good for Dark Apostles. Which makes sense, and is suuuuuper fluffy, but also kind of trash. But why? Why do we have to be such relative trash? At the moment, they don't even get unique characters. They could easily give us Erebus and Kor Phaeron; Erebus would be a Dark Apostle, and Kor Phaeron would be a unique Chaos Lord in Termie armor. The two could even synergize well, with some sort of complementing ability. That would make us good. Maybe a unique Raptor variant from the Ashen Circle, maybe a better Possessed unique to us. Instead, we're just reskinned and worse Black Legion with no uniques. Why?
  15. Does this seem like it'd work? Is Iconoclast over the top, or too specific? Is giving it no <MARK OF CHAOS> keyword to indicate their unwavering dedication to the Word Bearers' basic philosophy of Undivided a good idea? What should the base points be? I feel like I should playtest these lads with proxies for a bit. Edit: I, uh. Looked into the lore of these guys. They aren't exactly... alive, anymore. Whatever, I thought they'd be a neat assault unit and I'd still like input on it.
  16. In a character-heavy, somewhat fluffy Word Bearers list somewhat lacking in board control, do y'all think a 10-warp-gribbly squad of Daemonettes summoned in on a late turn into cover near an objective would be a good thing? Do they still get their Objective Secured if they're summoned? Would any of the other Daemon troops units be a better choice? (Daemonettes are fluffier for this purpose, because it's run by a Slaaneshi Daemon Prince.)
  17. Okay, so. I've got this set of Blightlords sitting around. Since I've dissolved my Death Guard army in favor of Word Bearers, I'm wanting to run them as straight-up standard Chaos Terminators. However, the Flail isn't a weapon option for Chaos Terminators... so I'm on the hunt for some Lightning Claws for the lad. I don't have the bits left over to just swap out weapons with power axe/combi-bolter and be done with it (all got used) and I think it'd be pretty cool to have the one guy with lightning claws. Any good source for them? I know you can get them in a FW Upgrade pack, and if I'm not mistaken, they come with the base Cataphractii kit, but I'm looking for a simpler (cheaper) solution.
