  1. First, the nifty mystery box. Very pretty. The instruction manual. The inside is mostly a parts list and build instructions, so I will only post it on request. Here's how the model looks with the full diorama base, but you all know that already. Contents, box 1 Contents, box 2 All the parts, none damaged during transport. Very clean casts. Not shown: standard bases, one to slot into the diorama base, one for the diorama base itself. These are all the parts that make up the primarch himself, with two head options and two sword options and accompanying scabbards. And finally the parts making up the diorama base. One Night Lord still fighting, the rest pretty sliced up, with an assortment of corpse parts to glue to the base. Today I've cleaned up the resin to prepare for washing and gluing in the next few days. Unfortunately, my cyanoacrylate superglue has last been used some time last year, so I need to make another trip into town before I can actually build more than the base assembly. It wil probably take me some time to paint everything after building, but I plan to do it fairly consistently over the next few weeks. A few of the parts were warped, but not dramatically so. All in all, I will say that this is a very high quality model from Forge World, with a minimum of hassle. The parts all fit together very well after the cleanup. Cleaning was a minimum of cutting and filing, there was very little flash, easily removed with a sharp knife. Next step will be washing everything thoroughly, gluing the bases with JB Weld, and then starting on the primarch himself. The diorama base will be looked at afterwards.
  2. Hi there folks, this is going to be a log for me to post up all those small one off projects that we find ourselves constantly drawn to. There's going to be a mix of building and painting projects, maybe even some terrain too! To start off with I've got an Executioner/Judiciar from the Dark Angels, or perhaps one of their successor chapters, I'd like to hear peoples' opinions on the model, both in general and in regards to what he should have adorning his power pack. Plain: Angel: Icon: Banner: Skulls: Thanks for looking and if anyone has alternative suggestions for decoration, please suggest those too!
  3. Hi, I'm new(ish) here. I've read plenty for a while, but only recently sorted out an account on The Bolter & Chainsword. I came back to 40k a couple of years ago, after a break of 15 or so years. I fell into DA accidentally, I had bought the smallest starter, then a couple of bits off eBay, one of which happened to be a Ravenwing Bike. But after doing a bit of reading (a lot has happened since 2003!), I really liked the background, seems much more interesting than most other chapters. So I bought some more kits. Things snowballed... I now have c7k points of Unforgiven, it has mostly been built and primed, but only about 3k of it painted so far. I don't get anywhere near the painting time I'd like - maybe a couple of hours a week. So it's been slow going. I've been wanting to do a hobby thread for a while, I'll add picture of some of the bits I've already completed - going back to close where I re-entered the hobby. Hopefully it'll show some of the progress I've made with painting (and photography) over the last 2 years. I was sure I had more photos, but I seem to have deleted them, or put them somewhere a bit too safe! My first painted unit was actually a Tactical Squad (what else!), but that is one of the missing photos. I soon bought the DA Lieutenant though, and I remember being so pleased with the outcome. I look at it now though, and wonder whether I should strip it and start again...(basing was added later). Lt Zachariah Next up, and around the time Kill Team was released, I decided my roster would be a bit different, and so I went for just Scouts. The sniper squad was actually the first unit I fully completed with basing - and they were my first attempt at camo. I have a lot of fun playing KT with these guys. Scout Squads A bit of a jump in time to the middle of last year, I spent a lot of time building rather than painting - and I'm missing some photos of what I painted in that time too. I really liked the Phobos Librarian, so he was on the shopping list. Phobos Librarian I also picked up the limited edition Primaris Master. Swapped in a few bits from the DA upgrade sprues, and here we have my warmaster. He single-handedly (specifically his left hand) won me my last game pre-lockdown, holding off a swarm of plague marines and poxbearers on a bridge for several turns. Killing everything he fought. He's probably one of my favourite models. Primaris Master with Plasma Pistol & Power Fist That'll do for now, I'll add some more photos in later! Cheers, Herb
  4. Hi folks, i recently returned to the hobby having spent some time away (8yrs since i was last here!) and thought that by posting something it would force my hand to actually completing it. I've been collecting on and off for 20 something years and clearly a lot has changed, but thankfully my stash of hoarded minis (while many are missing) turned up some gems when i decided to pull them out of storage. Most notably - these guys: some might scream sacrilege, but the box had been opened years ago, although i couldnt bring myself to clip the sprues and actually assemble them for fear of not doing them justice.. but since its now 2020 and theres not a lot to do ive busted them out, results below: turns out the photo looks a lot better on my phone.. might have to work on photography as this project progresses... you will also note that while RTB01 came with 30 marines i have 40 assembled! magic? heresy? turns out i actually had a little 10man squad handy too :) Turns out its still a pretty great kit to mess around with and considering the limited number off individual pieces i tried to make sure they were as interesting/dynamic as i could get them, to reduce the monopose factor. here they are in a more detailed weird montage form: Now that the modelling part is done (over s series of weekends) i need to get them painted! I'm a little torn about this because being a long-standing DA fan i can really see them all being painted in the old first legion black, although part of me wants to set a few aside and recreate some of the other legions from back in the day.. BA, UM, CF, SW, LotD etc.. but here's always something nice about having a consistent dedicated approach - first world problems i guess! Anyway, just wanted to share and will be sure to keep progress (and motivation) updated.
  5. So this is going to be a dark apostle in my Alpha Legion force. I didn't know what I wanted to use for him because the regular model feels too much like word bearers and not a fan of the dripping book of fire. Anyways I had a half painted Dark Angels Lieutenant and just kind of went overboard with some random bits. Yes he probably smacks himself in the face. Basic fluff for this guy. He's known by a lot of names whether it's the traveler, the stranger, seer or prophet he has been at the center of several imperial uprisings. To my warlord this apostle is simply known as the Rabble Rouser. A tool that he has been using for years not even sure if he is a space marine, but an agent who can manifest the war-band's will before the fleet's arrival. He is of unknown origin and still wears the black armour of a chaplain. An asset that can be frustrating but useful enough that my Alpha Legion warband has claimed him for themselves. Anyways, the model works for the purpose it has but his morning star staff is pretty ridiculous. The head is obviously slightly small for this armour as well, hence why he might be an enhanced human whether through warp or drugs or both he can wear the power armour. What do you guys think? Ridiculous? A random side project anyways of mashing bits together so no worries about any comments. ;)

  8. Hello everyone! I decided to post this up here, because a lot of HH players in my area are disappointed by the mess that the 30k Dark Angels rules are. Several issues seemed particularly egregious to us: 1.) Horrible or downright unplayable Rites of War (See the Stormwing and the Deathwing Rites of War in particular) 2.) Confused rules writing (See Enigmatus Cabal, Farith Redloss and Marduk Sedras' inability to utilize his special rule if in a Dreadwing RoW) 3.) Overcosted and oftentimes useless Hexagrammaton rules 4.) A legion trait that is very limited in use (Sure, quite a few things such as praetors, tacticals, despoilers and destroyers may profit from it but nobody is taking Terminators, Centurions or Sergeants with swords - AP2 is just too much of a must in that regard) Thus, I have decided to homebrew large parts of the DA rules section (With heaps of help from players around me). We have playtested these for about one and a half months now (around 20 games ranging from 1k to 4k in points) and have come to the conclusion that we are slowly inching in on something that we would consider not just playable, but also more similar in power level to legions such as the Blood Angels, White Scars, Space Wolves and the updated Night Lords. I'll spoiler each section as the rules blocks are pretty big - each spoiler section includes my thoughts as to how or why something was decided upon. Feel absolutely free to use these yourself. I'd appreciate your thoughts, suggestions and criticisms in this matter - I have never homebrewed anything to this extent so your words will be invaluable to me. Legion Equipment While the two swords we received are pretty cool, a lot of use have used the crow's beak hammers that come with the Ravenwing Knights kit from 40k for our units and sergeants - so we decided to make both a cool legion item as well as grant our sergeants some legion-native AP2 options. We have also decided to make the Calibanite Charge Blade more widely available to the army as well as patch it up slightly, as we think it's a bit too naff for a Unit that completely centers itself on slaying characters. Now, we move to the Rites of War. You will be quick to notice that there are only four Rites of War here (Fire, Death, Dread and Stormwing). The reason for that is simple: I consider the two Protocol rites of war (the ones from book 6) to be the best Dark Angels Rites of War out of any that were written for the First Legion and as such have oriented myself on those when coming up with the other four Protocols. Me and my group still use the Ironwing and Ravenwing Protocols on the regular, so we didn't really need any newly written up ones. As you will see, the four following Rites of War add significant bonuses to the army in question, but they also impose a lot of limitations. You will also notice that attention was paid to encourage people to play their units as specific Scions. I.e. your compulsory units must belong to a particular Wing but the advantages given out with the Protocols are only accessible to Scions of the Wing in question. The Deathwing Protocol The Stormwing Protocol The Firewing Protocol The Dreadwing Protocol Phew, lots of writing. A few final notes: Some of you may notice that all of the Protocols introduce Legion Veterans as potential troops. This has been done for both crunch and fluff reasons. I've noticed that people like Veterans - they want to build them, paint them and fully lean into legion aesthetics and gimmicks that may otherwise feel like too much on more run-of-the-mill squads like Tacticals. They are fun to build and come with so many options that they can fulfill completely different purposes in different armies. This is an option for people to make their armies more varied or to have units pull double duty if they want to be able to run several different RoW. Fluff wise, Crusade tells us that one of the reasons the Dark Angels were so successful as a force was because the hosts and wings heavily relied on their veterans teaching new recruits and sharing their wisdom with them - as such, I wanted to give people the ability to display that on the table. Once Wings are assimilated into proper forces, the veterans pull together in much larger numbers and the expertise of all wing-members becomes apparent - or so I imagine it at least. If you have made it this far, then I want to say thank you for taking your time to read this. Thank you even more, if you contribute anything to this - be it kind words or sharp criticism, I appreciate both in equal measure and am very reliant on what you think concerning balancing and power-levels. The next post will contain my attempts at working out a new/less confused version of Farith Redloss as well as an overhaul of the Scions of the Hekatonystika. Have a good one, The Observer
  9. I played a small tournament with my Deathwing Vanguard with 2 Land Raiders. It was a positive experience overall and I had some good games, but I predictably went 0-3. That's all right, I'd recently finished my LRC and had intended to take it and my older Land Raider to at least 1 tournament just for the lulz before Covid hit, and I finally was able to do so. Now it's time to play something that stands more chance of being competitive, so here's the list I'm going to try next. +++ NA 2K Ravenwing v1 (Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition) [101 PL, 5CP, 2,000pts] +++ ++ Outrider Detachment -3CP (Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Dark Angels) [101 PL, 5CP, 2,000pts] ++ + Configuration [9CP] + **Chapter Selector**: Dark Angels Battle Size [12CP]: 3. Land Speeder [3 PL, 70pts]: Multi-melta [10pts] Created with BattleScribe (https://battlescribe.net) I don't think there's too much remarkable here. I suspect most Ravenwing lists meant to be competitive are going to look fairly similar. I only have 2 squads of Attack Bikes because that's all I have - and 2 of them are just purchased and still in their boxes. That's about the extend of meta-chasing I'm willing to go to. In place of the 3rd squad is the Land Speeder squad. It's a little more expensive, but has more base movement and can go over terrain instead of around it. 3 Bike Squads instead of Outrider Squads on the theory that Bike Squads are a slightly better investment in points. Black Knights for the Weapons of the Dark Age punch. The Champion originally made it in to carry the Reliquary of the Repentant instead of the Apothecary, but then I listened to an Art of War podcast where someone used him as an effective beatstick, and the list could use that. Sammy and the 2 Talonmasters, natch. The idea is to fully exploit the first turn bonus Ravenwing get in Devastator Doctrine to hopefully put a serious hurt on my opponents' forces, then use mobility to rack up objectives. I figure there are worse plans.
  10. Evening everyone, I'm working on building out a dark angels list, but am at a little bit of a loss on filling in the last 165pts. Everything in the list is changeable, so if you have general recommendations I'm happy to hear them, but this is what I'm thinking so far: ++ Outrider Detachment -3CP (Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Dark Angels) [82 PL, 9CP, 1,835pts] ++ + Configuration + **Chapter Selection**: Dark Angels Battle Size [12CP]: 3. Black Knight Bike: Plasma Talon Ravenwing Champion [4 PL, 70pts]: Reliquary of the Repentant . Black Knight Bike: Plasma Talon + HQ + Captain on Bike [6 PL, -1CP, 105pts]: 2. Fury of the Lion (Aura), Bolt pistol, Heavenfall Blade, Power sword, Rites of War, Stratagem: Paragon of the Chapter, Warlord Lieutenant(s) [8 PL, 160pts] . Attack Bike: Multi-melta . Attack Bike: Multi-melta . Attack Bike: Multi-melta Bike Squad [11 PL, 265pts] . Attack Bike: Multi-melta . Biker Sergeant: Combi-plasma . 3x Space Marine Biker w/Chainsword: 3x Astartes Chainsword, 3x Frag & Krak grenades, 3x Twin boltgun . Space Marine Biker w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun . Space Marine Biker w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun Bike Squad [11 PL, 265pts] . Attack Bike: Multi-melta . Biker Sergeant: Combi-plasma . 3x Space Marine Biker w/Chainsword: 3x Astartes Chainsword, 3x Frag & Krak grenades, 3x Twin boltgun . Space Marine Biker w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun . Space Marine Biker w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun ++ Total: [82 PL, 9CP, 1,835pts] ++ General idea is for bike squads to have the flexibility to either be big bricks to soak up and dish out damage as needed, or combat squad into 4 obsec squads zipping around the table. I know a Tallonmaster fits as the 165 exactly, but I can't help but think something else (like a darkshroud or another chainsword bike squad or something) might be better for objectives or durability.

  12. G'day Bolter n' Chainsword brothers. Slowly getting back into hobby-ing / wargaming, and I have heard the Horus Heresy gets back to some more classic roots of the game. Which I am finding more and more as a thumb through the rulebook. To help save from amounting a pile of shame, but to start putting together a list my experienced friends aren't going to initially steam-roll I was wondering if I could have some input to a little list I put together. I have a plan to escalate this to a 1500, 2000 and then 3000 list.
