The Legion of Taurus - a Chaos Marine army log

After weeks of making Marines, Marines and more Marines it has just been a blast to cut loose and let my imagination run wild on this. There's still a fair way to go on it (plenty of sculpting), I don't want to give away too much for the time-being - but here's a tease:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_Tease.jpg

More pics soon, thanks for looking! :P

I see:

-An arm from the old mutation sprue

-A new tentacle spawn arm

-A new left hand spawn arm

So I will either guess a spawn, or maybe part of a GD?

Nice rhino, I love the tracks! The skulls look great too :tu:

Cheers!

Thanks everyone for your comments! :)

very nice concept and very good looking army.

do you know my 4-leged dreadnought? ... i think a similar one with a bullhead or the head from the bellrog would fit perfectly into this army.

it would look like a huge angry bull, ainming at nearby enemies with his mighty horns ... - what do you think?

I think i can remember seeing that Bob; funnily enough, I've been thinking of making the Defiler(s) that'll be in this army four-legged for the reasons you state... ;)

Yep, it's part of a spawn (but more on that later!)

Hi there! my first Post on this Forum. I really like your Army theme! You mind if i make a small Combat Patrol too?

Hey Chainaxe, I would be very honoured if you built a force of Legion of Taurus Marines! I look forward to seeing your efforts! :D

Before I post these next pics, I have to admit to something: I haven't painted a 40k-scale Tank in Six Years ;) I have made several, but never actually painted them; some I've sold on, others are in storage waiting to be painted. After starting on the Rhino this week, I realise why:

It really is boring... B)

After several days of chipping away when I've had the chance, here it is. I was a little disappointed at first, but I'm warming to it a bit more. The problem is I didn't thin out the Brazen Brass paint, so you can see lots of brush strokes in it. It's also been tricky to get the bronze to blend out, the way it does on the Marines (look closely on the pics, you'll see plenty of blotches and streaks). So it's been a bit of a working curve, an experience that will prove useful when I get round to doing the other tanks in this army (there'll be atleast two more, plus Defiler(s)). Anyway, less talk, more pics:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Rhino_wip_6b.jpg

Still a way to go on it as you can see, but it's getting there...

In other news, I decided to post a couple of pics of the first Spawn I've been making. Before the pics I should just explain the ideas and influences for making it.

Firstly, I think the new Chaos Spawn kit has some amasing components, but it bothers me that they're bi-pedal, with torsoes. I think a spawn should be a miss-shapen 'thing', completely twisted and un-natural - ultimately, its form is totally down to the whim of the Chaos powers that created it.

To that end, I decided that I would use the plastic miniature as a base, cut off the legs and then cover it with tentacles...

Secondly, I had two significant influences to this conversion:

- I recently read Lovecraft's 'At the Mountains of Madness', and I was very much struck by the description of the Shoggoth - an amorphous blob, a thing covered with eyes and tentacles.

- Also, my favourite film of all-time is John Carpenter's 'The Thing', so the idea of a random, formless monster as portrayed in that film was at the fore-front of my mind.

So after all that pretentious twaddle, here are the wip-shots of what I have dubbed 'The Thing of Madness':

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_wip_1_front.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_wip_1_rear.jpg

Finally, when it came to building it, I always knew I wanted to include a pair of arms, as I wanted people to look at it and think 'how does this thing propell itself forward - with its hands, or on those tentacles? What way is it meant to go, does it stand on those hands, where's the top, where's the head?' I deliberately made it so that it could stand on it's hands:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_wip_alt.jpg

So there you have it. Still much to do on that, more eyes to addd, sculpting to add, mold-lines to get rid of, but I'm pleased with how it's coming together so far.

More pics as work on the Rhino and Spawn progresses - till then, thanks for looking! B)

Great Job ( and great references too Carpenter rules!)

I´m getting nore and more fan of your army everytime I take a look at it ( and I liked it a lot when I first saw it).

Fluff, convertions, painting, everything´s flawless. My respects

The Rhino is Awesome, I really like your bronze painting, great looking

The Thing of Madness looks exactly like a Chaos spawn should. Wonderful!

How big do you plan this army would be?

Thanks very much, Kaleb; I'm a big fan of your Chaos army too, so I take your comments as a big compliment! :)

To answer your question, after doing this 400 point Combat Patrol I'll carry on right the way through 1,500, then 2,000, then till I've filled all the force selection chart (which I think will nearly be 3,000 points at that point); then after that I'm going to add some Apocalypse formations, mobs of Cultists and Mutants, stuff like that.

So I'll be at this army for quite some time! B)

That's good to hear! Since I compare your progress to mine, and as I have a stupid number of points to paint, that is greatly encouraging. Keep up the good work, as the Rhino looks very nice indeed thus far.

Work has continued on the Rhino, I've almost finished the main hull (just a couple of vents on the top which I've realised this afternoon I'd forgotten about), then I can do the side hatches, the gunner's hatch and the spot light.

I will be very glad to get it done, this thing has been a very slow paint-job! :Elite: ;)

Somone asked me how the crew are supposed to see out with that great big skull on the front; well, I always intended it would be fitted with lenses, so the crew can see out... :P Of all the painting on this model, these lenses are the bit I'm most pleased with:

Right, hopefully I'll get the whole thing finished for Monday evening, more pics as soon as it is, till then thanks for looking! ;)

Awesome! the tank is superb - if you can you could try to add a red glow around the eyes that would be awesome - not crazy about the skull on the back, but overall that is an crazy cool and certainly unique rhino.

the spawn just hurts my brain, however good he is. :P

Hah, then it's coming out exactly as I'd hoped! :P

Well, last night I finally got the frakkin' Rhino finished. Here's the finished article (warning! Blurry shots ahead! -_- )

Next I'm going to finish the Thing of Madness Spawn, then start on the next which I've already dubbed the Spinesect - that may give some suggestion as to where I'm going with it...

In the meantime, thanks for looking, more pics soon! B)

These are painted to an awesome standard, firestorm! :D Good job, on the metals and they looks nice on that desert board

I must agree. I was impressed as I saw your progress, but then to see them on the board... beautiful. Great work, firestorm!

There you go, those Fantasy Arcane Ruins are a must for Chaos players with a predilection for adding big skulls to their conversions!

Chaos? Not just for Chaos, my friend... If my loyalist Chaplain rode in a vehicle, I'd get them for his ride. :D

Hey, you're right they'd be perfect for a Chappy's Rhino too!

Congrats on adding the Rhino, it's good to see your army progressively getting larger. Do you plan on making a Daemon Prince at all?

Cheers, Xanthier; at the moment I don't plan to do a Daemon Prince, although there will be a daemonic element to the army...

That spawn is giving me the creeps... Seriously.

I´m not a huge fan of the ordinary chaos-spawns, but that one... That´s just scary... :ermm:

That's one *seriously* creepy spawn!

Thanks, I'm glad you feel that way about it, because that's what I intended... :)

While we're on the subject of Spawns, I've started making the second Spawn, when I saw the components I wanted to make it from I immediately dubbed the mental image it gave me the 'Spinesect'; but now I've made it I think it could be called the 'Lobstrosity', or maybe even the 'Brundle Spawn' (more literary/filmic references there - cookies to anyone who can guess 'em ;) )

Anyway, here it is, still wip:

Hello, I'm back after a few days away, thanks for all your comment Jabberwocky, glad you're still liking what I'm doing ^_^

I've spent the last couple of evenings doing some Green Stuff work on the Spawns, just smoothing over joins and filling in gaps, etc etc.

Here's how the 'Thing of Madness' is looking (admitedly, not much different from how it looked when I first posted pics!):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_wip_2.jpg

...and the Spinesect, I've added some more embelishments, here's two view of it:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spinesect_wip_2_front.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spinesect_wip_2_rear.jpg

There's still mold-line clearance to do on these minis, but when it's done they're ready for priming and painting. I've also made their bases, which I'll post pics of when they're painted...

More pics when stuff is painted, thanks for looking! :)

Thanks Muskie; seeing as I'm only planning on painting about 50 Legion of Taurus Marines for 40k you'll always have that head-start on me... ;) :P

I've finished painting the bases of the spawn, which ironically still aren't ready for priming (I've been over the, like 3 times, and I'm still finding mold-lines to remove  ); but anyhoo, pics of the bases: on the left, the Spinesect's base, on the right, the one for the Thing of Madness:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Spawn_Bases.jpg

I should be able to start painting the actual spawns before this weekend, aiming to get them done over the following few days. So, both ready the start of next week? :FA:

In the meantime, thanks for looking! B)
