World Eaters tutorial: Pt. 1

 

I started off with a Corax White undercoat.

I then painted the blue areas with Macragge Blue.

Next up I made a mix of Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade, about 1/1, and thinned it down with some Tamiya acrylic thinner. This was used to wash the armour.

I then sponged some White Scar back over the top of the armour.

Next I sponged some Enchanted Blue onto the blue areas to add a bit of depth.

I then painted some Abaddon Black onto the soft parts of the armour and small details such as the eye lenses and the mouth grill. You could also paint all of the other areas that are going to be metallic, such as the weapons and shoulder pad trims, but I felt that it was a bit unnecessary.

Next I painted Leadbelcher onto the soft parts of the armour, the weapons, the vents and pipes on the power pack, and the spikes of the armour. I forgot to paint the chainmail before I took this pic, but I fixed it up before moving on to the next step.

World Eaters tutorial: Pt. 2

 

The next step was to paint the gold areas with Retributor Armour.

I then added some definition to the colours that I'd already painted. The Leadbelcher was given a wash with Nuln Oil and the Retributor Armour with Agrax Earthshade. The white armour was 'black lined' with a 1/1 mix of Abaddon Black and Rhinoxhide.

I used White Scar to highlight the edges of the armour and the battle damage.

I highlighted the Leadbelcher and Retributor Armour with Runefang Steal.

Next up the decals.

Time for some weathering! I used a sponge to apply some Abaddon Black to the white and the blue areas.

I then sponged a bit of Runefang Steal onto some of the battle damage on the blue areas. I did't use any on the white because it wouldn't really show up very well.

The eye lenses were painted with a base coat of Blood Red, highlighted by adding some Slayer Orange to the red, and finished off with a line of Yriel Yellow. I then gave the lenses a coat of Tamiya Clear Red.

The blood is Tamiya Clear Red and then the Clear Red with some Abaddon Black added. I used an old, stiff bristled brush to apply it.

I really like it, man... you're tempting me to add some Triarii allies for my Word Bearers, damnit...

 

On the blood... I think you added the right amount, but it looks a bit bright. It may be a trick on the eyes due to the white, but perhaps next time add more black or use Blood for the Blood God.

Yay, more World Eaters! We'll make a member of the XII Legion of you yet -- especially with the plastic Mk 3 Marines and all... ;)

 

The new guy is looking excellent -- like a barbarian warlord in SciFi equipment! There's a certain wonkiness to the proportions, but that has everything to do with FW's parts and nothing with your work. The paintjob is fantastic, as is the tutorial: Given the quality of your paintjobs, I was pleasantly surprised to learn your WE recipe isn't that different from mine -- I must be doing something right, after all ;)

 

Anyway, fantastic stuff, as usual!

Hahaha, have a go! Painting each of the Legions definitely gave me a greater appreciation of the different colour schemes. Plus it's a great way to learn some new techniques and use colours that you wouldn't usually use.

Have you tried to ad a slight coat of Matte Varnish to the areas where you'd like the dust to be? 
You can brush on the dust, fix ist and revarnish the non dusty areas ( I just assume you keep your metallic armor gloss varnished), which leaves the dusty areas nice, dull and dusty, whaile the rest of the armor would look as usuall.

About the weathering powders not sticking to the Metallic paint: try to cover the areas you want to cover with some GW Lahmian Medium - it will take off the sheen, so use it sparingly above the foot, but the weathering powders should stick just fine on it after that. :t:

Well, well...I did not know that

Yeah, Lahmian Medium acts basically as a colourless acryllic paint, so it provides the same texture on which weathering powders normally stick. Thinking about it, I'm not sure though if Lahmian Medium sticks to Tamiya Metalic Red like it does on other acryllic paints. I've never used Tamiya Metallics before, so it's up to kizzdougs to decide if he wants to try it, and then hopefully tell us about the results... ? :)

I've been lurking these forums for a looooooooong time now, and since finally registering about 7-8 years ago I've posted nothing until today.  I wanted to bring that up because I hope it adds some weight to the enormous thanks I wanted to give you for all the inspiration I've derived from this single thread.  My first ever GW purchase was a box of marines that I painted as blood angels back in '91, but the majority of my 40k gaming life was devoted to alpha legion csm.  Nowadays tho I have a job/family/house and thought I would never have time to paint/model/play again but your tutorial earlier this year on 30k alpha legion was so simple it inspired me to pick up a Calth box and paint it up with the metallic spray.

 

Its such a simple thing really.  Your one tutorial breathed life right back in to me.  Not just in terms of breaking through my painting wall either.  After not playing any GW games in many years I'm now making time to play in a 30k league with my Alpha legion and have picked up a second Calth box and a bunch of other 30k minis and am using your thousand sons metallic scheme to paint blood angels, bringing everything back full circle in my hobby life.  Just happening upon your thread has had a major snowball effect on me, and for that I thank you!

Well what can I say? Thank you very much for the kind words. Hearing this kind of story from a fellow painter/gamer is pretty much the highest raise you can get and very inspiring for me. 

 

Secondly, welcome back to the hobby and 30k! Once you have some pictures to share you should definitely consider starting your on project thread. I'd love to see some of your Alpha Legion, and a WIP thread can be a great source of inspiration and community interaction.
