Scaling the grey mountain of shame. Heresy Dark Angels

Cheers hushrong, I'm happy you like it!

I'm glad I did it as I had to do quite a bit of kit bashing/modelling to get it to a paintable state. Made me practice those techniques. Although I'm also glad I finished it as it was a bit of a pain to strip and repaint.

So my first ever harlequin is done, diamonds and all! Not the best example but I think i know what to do to improve.

Things I've learnt;

I really like doing the mask!

The diamonds did not even up so ended up with matching colours next to each other. Need to take it steady when creating the lines and count them out.

On to the next one!

On with the show! The troupe master and second player are done. The diamonds are still not overly neat but I think, well hope they're improving slightly.

I now have a method to try and get even spaces. I just need to practice the technique more.

Three more players to do then I have a squad. I'm currently gearing up to do a starweaver and 6 sky weavers. I hope I can get them started next month.

I am pretty proud of these but I always want to try and improve where I can, even if it's just to appease the little voice of doubt.

The final 3 players of my first troupe are complete

Group shot with the troupe master. These will be the fusion bus. Well once the transport is done.

  • 3 weeks later...

In between my work on the harlys I've painted a Helix Adept of the Shadow Haunters chapter. This was for an event held in the raven guard forum.

It was a welcomed break from painting diamonds and it allowed me to try a few new things/techniques.

I've tested a new colour scheme and a basing style. The latter involves using left over sprue and cork and is meant to look like a road and footpath. It's an urban environment.

I've also tried to create scratches and chips for the first time. Not many on here but I think they've gone ok.

I've also used micro sol/set for the first time too. Its definitely worth using these as they sorted out the decals going on a curved surface really well and have a painted on look to them.

I've even tried to improve my photo taking ability, although this still needs work lol.

Cheers Bjorn. That's exactly what I wanted to achieve. A more realistic urban scheme without going full on camo fatigues. Very fitting for a son of corax.

Thanks hushrong! It is a welcome change. I now have an urge to do the rest of the squad. I'm going to try and resist though as I really want to complete an army for once!

That good old urge to hobby butterfly! That sirens call that pulls you in all directions. Don’t let it get the best of you haha!

I’d say save the rest of the squad as a reward between completing chunks of your main army. And nice little break/breather to stay fresh. Believe me I do want to see more!

Awesome work there! (Both the harlies and RG)

Your 'extra-tactical' helix marine is spot on, the colour scheme, weathering & damage, aged metal joints, use of tranfers all seriously cool. My only comment (not criticism!) would be using the brown leather tone you've used on the holster in-lieu of the green on the other packs (just because my eye goes there). I think the cyan rifle (which looks great) and green eyes/ display would get more love if they weren't competing with the similarly coloured gear.

Keep them coming!!

@sandaphon. Thank you for you kind words. I think I agree with you. I pondered over whether they should be green or brown for sometime. I think brown would have added to the more neutral 'tactical' look I'm going for. As it's an individual mini, I think I could get away with doing the rest as brown leather.

@machine god. Ha, I don't think I have ever drilled a bolter. My main force is a very large Heresy dark angels force. Far too many bolters to drill for them! I may start on this force as I'm limiting it to the shadowspear box contents with some reivers and another set of eliminators and incursers. Shouldn't be too many to do. Cheers bud!
