Combat Patrol Boxes (Replace Start Collecting Boxes)

Recommended Posts

The most interesting thing are the SM vanguard SC and CSM SC from Shadowspear

They are both at 80€ and they are both above 500 points worth

Vanguard SM is about 550 points and CSM is about 700 points

Now both contains miniatures not available elsewhere (Great Possesed and Venomcrawler in CSM one and Suppressors in SM one)

If they don't make separate models for that units so they can dump these boxes both will be the best bargain for SC/CP boxes

I wish GW released before the boxes with the half DI (DG & SM) and SoB cause now there is the risk that they will make combat patrols out of them at 110€ each

If they were going to retire the Vanguard Marines box (or rebox it as a Combat Patrol for £85) they would probably have done it now alongside the Codex. But I think even GW know that putting the same product in a different box and charging 40% more for it overnight is a hard sell. I guess it will happen eventually though.

The Sisters stuff though is slightly different; £85 for the Army Set models would actually be cheaper than it cost to get them when they first came out, and I'm sure GW would feel they could justify it on that basis alone. Sure there's no Codex and cards like there was in the initial box, but even if you have to buy them separately it's still only a bit more expensive in total than the Army Set was, so that at least seems... fine?

Now that GW have confirmed that these boxes are intended to provide a complete 25PL/500pt Combat Patrol it will be interesting to see how they handle factions like Guard who can end up with a LOT of models in a 25PL list...

I expect a Guard box will have to be relatively vehicle heavy in order to get the PL up. Could make it a very good deal.

Daemons, AdMech and Orks are all in a similar spot.

Yeah if the pricing is consistent alot of fractions would benefit from this. That said the space wolf set looks like a combat patrol should, and I hope the future ones look more like that, than the deathwatch one which looks like a start collecting box with one more character.

What about 67% increase? That's what happened with the bundle of 2 smaller gargants alongside the Behemath release, €60 --> €100.

So far we haven't had any ETB kits so far, small sample size I know, but perhaps these new boxes will only be the full kits to start with. It would be better if some of the SC were replaced with the full kits instead of the ETB?

I'm not sure what product this is so I don't know the context, but I guess it does happen in some scenarios. I remember when they repacked Dire Avengers from 10-man to 5-man boxes, effectively a 100% price increase, although the context there was that the kit was quite old already and hadn't changed price for several years.

In the case of the Vanguard set, that was only released within the last year so a 40% hike would feel really obnoxious. In two years time, it might feel more palatable, if still disappointing.

The sister army box is not a legal Combat Patrol (it has 3 élite choices instead of 2) and it clocks at just 440 point that is too low for a 500 points base army

The two halfs of DI in another hand are way above 500 points

So i dont know if GW will take the opportunity to rebox them as Combat Patrol sets

Well, Start Collecting boxes eventually got different prices to reflect that some had more content than others, I suppose it's plausible we'll see £100 Combat Patrols for factions that need a lot more models to make reasonable armies.

I think the value of the SW and DW combat patrol boxes is sort of skewed by the presence of the upgrade sprues. Can't think of a better way to put it but their inclusion changes things a bit in that they contribute to the cost and how we might measure the savings but they don't make a difference to the box's ability to make a 25PL list, you know? Even if they're obviously vital to the character of the two forces.

Agreed that it'll definitely be interesting to see what combat patrol boxes look for factions like AdMech, guard or orks.

I am scared they will just quietly go out of production soon, then will be deleted from store in January, then in spring CSM and Vanguard patrol boxes will appear with identical contents, just with chaos sorcerer/sneaky captain thrown in to "justify" price increase...

I'd argue the DW box is skewed more by the inclusion of 2 character models. Both the apothecary and lieutenant are 22.50GBP and 20GBP respectively. The intercessors and aggressors retail at 65. On that basis you get the characters for half price assuming you don't want the upgrade kits. Buying multiples soon become redundant and at that stage the box becomes arguably expensive for non death watch chapters and you'd be better off just buying a box of intercessors and a box of aggressors from an inde store. Nice as a one off purchase but really lacks repurchase value due to the high cost.

The DW primaris box is just terrible value for a starter. unless you are specifically building Deathwatch (and only Deathwatch) with a lieutenant and apothecary.

Not codex space marines, not blood angels or any other chapter. Just Deathwatch and you must specifically want those HQs to get value out of this. It's really just awful, and this is coming from a person who has a deathwatch army. You'd think they would at least try to get someone like me to think about buying this?

Hmmm, I have a feeling if Combat Patrol boxes are replacing Start Collecting we aren't getting restock or roboxs of said Start Collectings.

Makes the fact that Drukhari, Admech, Blood Angel, and SM being out of stock and we know we have releases for those factions coming soon, just something to note.

I think we see Blood Angels, Death Guard, Space Marine Combat Patrols in Late Nov/Dec. January is Drukhari and Admech, along with those two codexs.

The AdMech box was around for just a few months if that’s true. Was going to pick one up soon too. Annoying.

Is DE and AdMech in Jan a guess based on the model part previews? Or something you’ve heard?

January is Codex supplement DA

GW already told it

Yep, we know one of them is DA. The original Codex preview said Dark Angels was "Early next year along with the first Xenos Codex of 2021".

Regardless, "temporarily out of stock online" has never been a reliable way of predicting what is and isn't being retired or replaced, so I really would not read too much into that. Especially not at the moment where it feels like half the range is out of stock at any given time.

Edit: That said if you have an interest in any of the existing Start Collecting boxes I probably wouldn't wait much longer to get them.
