Combat Patrol Boxes (Replace Start Collecting Boxes)

They're good value for the models but not really appealing to me in terms of composition. I'd rather have Infiltrators than Reivers in the Space Wolf set for example and it'd go well with the Invictor.

They are good value because they offer miniatures at a discount on the retail price. 
The issues are that they are going to be sold at a higher price (bad for new people who may be put off by that) and that the discount appears to be smaller than the one currently offered on the Start Collecting boxes.

Appears to me these boxes are starting to step on the toes of what I would expect to be the purview of a starter set like Assault on Black reach or Battle for Macragge but without all extras most would expect out of a starter set.

 

With that taken into account these boxes really don't save the buyer (who's getting into 40k for the first time) as much money. I'd like to see comparisons to the new commander level starter.

I think that's a good point, but what we don't know is if the price point will stay the same for the other armies. If it does they should have bigger discounts than the old start collecting boxes for guard and xenos fractions.

I’m gonna buy the Deathwatch box for my Dark Angels. I don’t have the LT, apothecary or Aggressors, the Intercessors are always useful, and the shoulder pads will be fun to have as I never bought the old DW squad box.

 

With a discount that sounds like great value to me.

It is true that the savings are not as much, not disputed at all I think. But the point is with the SC boxes that you can't actually get started with many of them. Take CWE or some of the others that don't even have a troops choice in them, what are you going to field with their current box? You can't buy those things and actually get into the game and start playing without supplementary purchases on top of it. For a complete novice, they want to purchase one item and be ready to roll.

The savings are likely slim to nil on these, especially here in OZ for bundles like this. However if you don't have any/ many primaris then these are more for convenience sake. One box is easier to store than 4+ on the pile/ mountain of shame. As always non GW LGS or internets will likely be where most of these are sold. To me, looks like a product intended to bulk out GW wholesale trade accounts revenues than their direct retail accounts revenues (Joe public).

Between Covid manufacturing issues and these Combat Patrol boxes, I can't see Battleforces for 40k being released this year. Otherwise, surely news would've been leaked by now? I think last year we had pictures mid October, and details before then?

They announced them on the 31st of october last year I think.

 

I think the battleforces might still happen, as they'd be a great place to put things like Deathwing terminators, etc. that they probably won't put in the combat patrol box. As well that only a handful of combat patrol boxes will be out by christmas, which is the targeted thing for the battleforces.

 

Regardless, I think it's likely they will announce either way tomorrow.

I don’t think they have the manufacturing capacity for battle forces this year. Many independent stores are reporting shortages, delays and limits on orders from GW

I’ve been trying to get my hands on deathwing knights for some time now. I wonder if there is something to them putting the lot of them into a Dark Angel battle force. They didn’t get one last few years, and there was a Blood Angel and Space Wolf one last year. I love those battle forces; I hope they do some.

Just my opinion but I think these boxes would be far more appealing if they came with a new character model for each of the factions. It might be the final impetus to buy one for a new collector or a reason to expand for someone who is already into the faction. The contents of the space wolf one is quite appealing to me, for example, but I've already got the character so it kind of negates any savings

I don't find them particularly appealing. The Deathwatch CP box is basically the old Space Wolves Primaris start collecting box with a Primaris Apothecary thrown in. Except the raised the price by more than the cost of buying the Apothecary as a separate model? The SW Primaris box was a steal, because every model was useful regardless. You'd get the basic Intercessors and Aggressors for your army, plus the Lt wasn't wasted if you got an extra box because it had different weapon options. The same can't be said for the DW box, because you only really ever need 1 of the apothecary model. As for the new SW box, guess they needed somewhere to put all the Reivers they aren't selling.

Adding some specific faction additional sprues make the box really hard to spam. And reselling those sprues is hard. So, for me , those boxes are useless. Better save some money and see the upcoming battleforces.

My advice: grab an indomitus half or a vanguard start co.

Especially considering (as far as I recall) more than half of GWs revenue comes from trade sales. Although they'd make more profit per item on the direct sales that would come to them as a result of independents not having stock, you'd think that the total sales volume would be way down. They won't be doing this lightly.

Really wonder what we're going to see in the Death Guard box. A lot of people have been expecting the Dark Imperium models to reappear as a SC set, so if they work as a combat patrol, that could be it. If so, though, that would be a pretty significant price increase for those models.

There's an outside chance they price stuff like that slightly lower; for example, the SC boxes featuring the Stormcast and Khorne halves of the original AoS starter set are the cheapest ones in the range.
