Either GW is not ready for big leagues storytelling and didn't know you can't just offscreen a popular cast member of your AAA video game franchise with your small-town, miniature game writing ways

Or this was coordinated with Sabre and Chairon iscoming back and that's a plot best for Space Marine 3.

Chairon for Redemptor Ironclad variant!

Give him a chance to punch a Lord Discordant to death with a Siege Claw.

GW can and definitely would just soft retcon on the grounds of 'Dreadnoughts are technically considered dead'.

Yeah, having read the article I fully expect that we've just been shown a preview of the SMIII tutorial/opening mission.

Except unlike Titus getting his ass saved at the last second, the squad don't make it out and instead take as many down with them as possible.

still gotta show it on screen. that's what we did on DoW2 with Davian Thule.

They did the same with SM2, all the story of what happened to Titus after SM1 was written in a White Dwarf.

After that SM2 made us play a part of this story and there is also dialogue around it.

Now we just have to wait and see how it will be used in the future games.

It's just weird to be spoiled like that by a medium about another.

At least he wasn't a popular unit that was unceremoniously removed.

The Dark Angels lost their special character Scout Sergeant in a text box in their Codex.

Do you mean Sergeant Naaman? He died heroically in the Piscina IV campaign played by Gav Thorpe, Andy Chambers and Pete Haines which they wrote about in White Dwarf before he ever appeared in a codex.

Oh. Well, I guess I'm wrong then. It happens... once or twice... a day.

Personally, I'm fine with this.

That's what Imperial Space Marines are made for. To fight and die for the Imperium.

And what a great way to die too.

Yeah, Sergeant Naaman was always dead as a doornail even though he had his own special rules and everything.

However, the Dark Angels did lose a major character with his own books, storyline, and miniature in a blurb explaining why Lazarus is now a Primaris Marine and Captain of the 3rd Company.

Maybe you were thinking of Captain Balthasar.

Best comment I've seen regarding the description of Acheran's demise:

"GW could only spare three paragraphs."

They gave Chairon only one.

Honestly don't really know what you lot expected. Acheran was clearly a bit/side character at best. If he was going to get a book about his death, he'd have had a book about his life, where all he ever really had was a few paragraphs dotted through some supplements. He wasn't a special character with anything of note about him. Yes he appeared in SM2, but fundamentally he had a fairly limited role. I didn't hate him in SM2 or anything, but its just complaining for the sake of complaining to think he was somehow owed a novel about his death.

Frankly, the same is true of Chairon also, I liked Chairon a lot but ultimately he was a game character for that specific game, its a bit sad we now know he wont be in any sequels, but it is what it is, he was ultimaletly again, nothing more than a side character though, Titus was always the key character.

Uriels disappearance is more egregious because he DOES have novels (decent ones even) and he DOES have a miniature and he DOES have rules. But that disappearance doesn't really seem to have too much to do with this release as far as we know, and he's not dead either as far as we know.

Acheran did technically have a model, but no rules. I think people were fond of him from the game as he did leave an impression and the Scottish accent made him even more memorable.

But he was never a major character or someone who enjoyed the benefits of plot armour. GW could do something fun and give him legend rules.

Who knows what will happen with Uriel. It's weird for that model just to be gone.

the model was officially simply a phobos captain, much like the terminator captain from leviathan is exactly that... a terminator captain. Neither are actually a unique ultramarine character.

I mean, people could expect the character to just not be killed off-screen. That does not seem like an unreasonable expectation to me. They could have just left him alone.

Also, what business does whoever made that decision have messing with a product that is more popular than pretty much any other story GW has produced in recent memory?

The Leviathan Captain was meant to be 1st Captain Agemman, but he is always overlooked and used to being forgotten about.

I'm more curious with whats happening with Uriel Ventris. It looks like he is being quietly retired by GW for Titus.

I mean at the bare minimum they could've done a short story like they did for every one of the new SM captain/chapter master models that they recently released

I assume they're working alongside the development team to do this, I doubt a random Warhammer Community worker has just decided to kill off a character. Based on Space Marine 2, the following releases, the secret level episode, and the 500 Worlds trailer we got, I'm guessing that they've decided what the direction will be for Titus. This will have been planned out in advance, and they will have worked with the studio making Space Marine 3 to determine what the following narrative arcs will be, so this won't throw anything off. It is a shame we didn't get to see their send off, but I'm assuming it'll be the start of Space Marine 3 or done in a secret-level esc cutscene?

GW own the property, not saber, all the characters are for GW to do as they please with, and as NorthernUltramarines says, it wont be a random warhammer community person that made the call, it'll be GW writers.

most random company captains dont get stories of their demise, even with him being in a game as a side character, he simply isn't that important.
