This topic came out of a conversion with N1SB as we both like to talk about economics and financial documents, and a saying I been hearing for years "You know, if I had bought GW shares instead of their miniatures,".  I was wondering if there would be a interest in an event next year where instead of buying the new shiny models (which sits on a shelf for years), we paint what we have, and be responsible with our hobby funding and lives.  The rules would be simple:

  • State a monthly budget for the hobby
  • Stick to the budget
  • Post the models you buy (or have on hand already) and by the end of year post the work you completed.
  • Any left over budget money, invest or save (does not have to be GW stock)

Just a laid back event where member coach and keep each other accountable not only for our hobby but in personal life (I have seen so many people go into debt / bankruptcy for this hobby).  So, is there any interested?

This year I set myself a challenge to paint more than I bought - I started well but have ultimately failed (unless there is a real Santa Rally on the painting desk).

This event feels in a similar spirit - having a little bit of discipline to go with the spending, keeping it fun.

Totally up for this. I'd love to combine this with the "Hammer the Backlog" approach. (In case you don't know, Hammer the Backlog is one guy taking on his pile of shame and documenting it for now 4 years, has a blog and a YouTube channel and he does some mild project management to achieve this - I totally fell in love with that approach). I'm in a bit of a difficult situation since we had our second son about 7 weeks ago so time is precious, but I should really track my overall hobby spending more. That pile of grey in my basement is just insane - although I try not to admit that in front of my wife. :D

I'm really keen to get involved for 2026.

I've amassed a huge 'pile of potential', to the point where I have run out of storage space and yet still keep adding to it (I can ignore what I can't see / need the occasional dopamine hit).

I've stepped off the Kill Team hype train but something to motivate me to stop buying would be good.
