Per my commitment to the Librarium Painting Challenge here’s the start of my 10-man Luna Wolves tactical squad:

These are my second attempt test models after getting mixed reviews for my first attempt; to be found here.

So C&C always welcome. I’m hoping to get the rest of this squad done in short order. I’m really looking forward to doing the sharkey missile launcher guy. Expect to see him soon.

Cheers, -OMG

The marines look great. It's like they jumped off the cover of 'False Gods' and straight onto the table top. The legion symbol looks particularly good. What's your technique for the white armor, I have tried to do luna wolves several times without any success. Great looking mini's can't wait to see more.
What's your technique for the white armor,

White is a nemesis color if there ever was one. It took me a while to get a color I liked which made me rethink things from the foundation up. These guys are primed in Tamiya grey (which is like a battleship grey color) and then dark lined with GW’s black ink (the new one, whatever it’s called). The colors are then built up from Vallejo, Sky Grey to Ivory to White. I put the layers down in a wet brush style to keep a sense of texture and help let the underlying colors get through.

I guess that was a longer answer than you wanted but you did ask.

How are you going to base these guys? Oh and are you planning to use any of the FW MKIV pieces?

When it’s all done, they’re going to be part of a display base that depicts a scene on the embarkation deck of the Vengeful Spirit. So once the deck plating is in place, all the models will be placed and their section cut out to fit the bases. I’ve never created a base like this so I’m looking forward to it.

As far as FW, you mean the Scorpion bits? Due to saving some $'s and consistency I was going to keep to the more garden variety plastic bits. I may have to do a pre-h Landraider one of these days in which using the FW or a DiY kit is going to have to be in order.

Does the Red Rim symbolize anything in particular or is it there for contrast?

This army is ¼ of a team where we’re each doing a different LW Company. We each took a different color band to differentiate the Companies. I took terra cotta to signify that these are 2nd Company marines under Torgaddon and yes it does add some nice contracting color as well.

Here’s a quick update. Again, still more a test than a completed model but I only have 4 ½ weeks left in the challenge I’ll still have to call it done!

I committed to doing 12 models and I have 3 done. That sounds like about 10% to me. With 19 more to get done by the end of March I guess I have a much bigger problem to consider.

Oh well! It’s all for fun anyway right? Right.

I’m thinking that Torggadon will be based on the new Sicarius body. The other team members are using models from the, Masters of the Chapter, kit. I think that Sicarius body will a few modifications will work out nicely to fit the theme. More on that soon.

So in order to complete my Librarium challenge, I need to finish painting those 10 tactical marines, paint up their “Razorback” transport & finish my Capt. Torgaddon model. I’ve got three weeks.

Here’s where we stand:

“Razorback”

Twin-linked Heavy Bolter Turret

Though not on the list, I also have a squad of Sternguard to consider. Here’s the first test for that squad. I’m planning on using all the chaos WHFB legs for this unit.

Sternguard #1

great looking wolves so far. cant wait to see your take on torgaddon (really hope you use a different head though, sicarius' face is too grim and serious for the jestful torgaddon imo)

nice to see someone else using the chaos legs with sternguard, i think they go well together. :)

The razorback is bloody brilliant, i love it! Got plans for some other weapon loadouts than the twin heavy bolter? I'd love some additional shots of that razorback.

The whites could do with some more definition, like more blacklining. Especially things like the purity seal blend too much together with the armourplates, for example. Hope you take it the right way and don't think i'm too harsh, but i feel that these guys looks a bit rushed compared to your previous stuff, like your red and black marines. I do love the numbers on the sergeants legs however, very unique and cool, i haven't seen that before.

Cheers!

I haven’t decided on a Torgaddon head yet but it definitely won’t be Sicarius’. If anyone had any suggestions I’d promise to consider them. You don’t tend to find any laughing/smiling marines in the 40k universe. I may have to consider a non-GW bit for him.

any WIP shots of him yet? what weapons is he going to have?

No WIP shots of him but he needs to be done by month-end. For the tournament list, he is a “counts-as” Pedro so he needs a power fist (taken from the Masters of the Chapter) and something that looks like Dorn’s Arrow; for which I’m thinking a 4-barrled storm bolter might do the trick.

Once I decide on the head he’ll start coming together. That’s the only thing outstanding.

I very much appreciate the comments. If things look rushed it’s because they are and I’m climbing the learning curve on coming up with quality whites. Right now the approach is:

Tamiya grey spray primer

GW black wash for the black lines

Vallejo light grey, sky grey, ivory & white largely wet brushed in that order.

The wet brushing is overpowering the original black lining so I may need to add a re-black line step w/clean up for each model.

The approach itself is still a work-in-progress so any advice out there I’ll take.

Thanks for the posts, -OMG

well, a couple heads come to mind:

the baal predator crewmans head with the short cut hair.

*insert heresy here* you could sculpt a caesar/romaesque hair on to one of the masters of the chapter's heads, I think the one with the scar would do quite well. However, that model is frowning i believe.

also, reaper miniatures has quite a few bare heads on their minis (which are 28 mm) but they have a tendency to be bulb nosed monstrosities...

http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Dark%...ds/latest/03324

heres an example of one of their better heads

Your white is beautiful. Your conversions are even better ^^

The white is a real pain to get really good...i'm currently doing quite the same process as you when i paint my -almost- white space wolves.

Other than that i'd say that i think there were no razorbacks back in the heresy...at least something like that is mentioned in the codex ultramarines...

Exactly the reason why it was converted as per the image above in the truest sense of, “counts’as” modeling.

Thanks, -OMG

Here’s the status of the “razorback” counts-as converted rhino tank:

So from the challenge perspective I now have 6 tac marines (inc. the Sgt) and the tank nigh complete. That leaves 4 more tacs (w/flamer & sharky ML) plus the Capt. to complete before month-end.

I think I’m in range to fulfill my commitment. More soon.
