nurgling6688
So this is my beloved chapter called the Sons of Dorn. I've had them for about 6 or 7 years now and they are currently in the process of being added on to and revamped (as my painting has improved over 7 years) They were actaully featured in White Dwarf about 5 years ago in the create a Chapter contest for the 4th edition SM codex. They had a full half a page all to themselves with a large picture, some detail shots and thier chapter's history which i wrote. I will try and get an image of that page up here at some point. Anyway, right now i have several things going for them, a Sterguard squad, the space hulk termies, a scout bike squad, a landspeeder storm, repainting parts of my already finished models and of course, a Thunderhawk. So without further ado... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02567.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02571.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02577.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02581.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02587.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/DSC02592.jpg As you can see i have already painted the cockpit. The landing gear is not glued onto the model so that i will have the option of putting it on a flying base. The turbo laser and attack wings wont be glued on till after i have painted it and at this point about the only thing i have left to do is the heavy bolters and filling/fixing gaps. Sternguard http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sterguard.jpg First Space Hulk Terminator http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/terminator.jpg He is magnetized to his base, i am going to make space hulk specific ones later so i can switch. Veteran Sergeant http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sargeant.jpg This is a model i completely repainted, no new color scheme, just better techniques and color choices. It is the Captain Cortez model with a Deathwatch helmet, i think it makes the model a lot better instead of Cortez's weird afro he was rocking. Its one of my personal fave mini's in my army, use to be in the command squad, now he is going to lead one of the tactical squads. I am going to replace/redo all of my sergeants as they will be the centerpieces amongst the more casually painted tactical/assault/devestator marines. and here is one of the updated tactical marines... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/newtrooper.jpg compared to an old, unaltered one... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/oldtrooper.jpg They are all part of the 4th company (excluding veterans/scouts of course) and i hope to have the complete 4th company at some point. Comments and constructive crit welcome. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/ Share on other sites
The Damned
The old Cortez/Vet model loos great. The conversion is really nice, and the shading turned out great. David the Despoiler
Looking good so far, keep up the good work! I know what you mean by being tempted to update old models. I look at what I paint now and what I painted last summer and I just shake my head in shame at not being able to update my minis (due to lack of time/ new minis). I remember how proud I was of what I accomplished before and how now it all seems to be so mediocre when put into perspective. Anywho, now that that depressing little reminiscing is over with, I'm glad to see you got that beast finally built. All I ever hear of the bigger Forge World minis save Titans is that they suck to build and are badly cast. Maybe it's just the older casts? Inquisitor Engel
I love it - I seem to remember them from way-back-when! Would you mind posting a big more back story? mega_marines
Oh man! I remember reading that very White Dwarf and oggling that very same paint scheme. Definitely good to see them again. And with a Thunderhawk no less! I also had to learn how badly some of the pieces fit on it, but otherwise it was ok. At least when it's done, it'll look nice, and the army will have some pretty sick looking air support! ghosty
If you were having as much trouble with getting your Thunderhawk to fit together as you say so, shouldn't you have contacted forge world? you've dropped nearly a grand into the kit(dunno what the conversion rate is for Pound Sterling>American Dollar : /) sounds like they made a cock-up of your order there. That aside very nice work, mate, nice crisp black and even with the problems with your Hawk it looks imposing as all hell! nurgling6688
Yea the only problem is that i bought this thunderhawk about 5 years ago, and its just been sitting around, i dont have the original purchase number or ne thing ne more. Plus it wasn't like just one part was messed up, it was the whole thing. Every single piece was a slightly different size. WAR
great Looking models, sucks about the Thunderhawk. The cortez conversion is great I am going to have do that to the cortez I have laying around. sisko11
Wow, I LOVE the scheme, simple, striking, with just the perfect amount of extra color thrown in with the red weapons to create a perfect dynamic. Very nicely designed from a graphic perspective, and even better, beautifully executed. My only crit would be to tighten up the freehand script, it looks like the paint isnt thinned enough and is blotching then thinning out, creating too big a thickness difference between the start of the line and the end. Small thing to pick on though. Well done! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/#findComment-2302639 Share on other sites
nurgling6688
Wow, I LOVE the scheme, simple, striking, with just the perfect amount of extra color thrown in with the red weapons to create a perfect dynamic. Very nicely designed from a graphic perspective, and even better, beautifully executed. My only crit would be to tighten up the freehand script, it looks like the paint isnt thinned enough and is blotching then thinning out, creating too big a thickness difference between the start of the line and the end. Small thing to pick on though. Well done! Thanks! the thick script you're referring to, is it on the tactical marines? i painted them 5 years ago when i was 16, even on the updated ones i didnt want to go through and repaint all of the script, figured it was good enough for a grunt. Just got the Battle Missions book, there is a mission for the space marines designed around using a Thunderhawk! it takes up a heavy, fast and elite slot and id lose if it gets destroyed, but still, excited that ill get to use my baby is non apoc games :) Update on the thunderhawk, almost done assembling, just have the wing mounted heavy bolters to go, they were cast pretty bad so i've been putting em off. Don't know when i will start painting though, i kind of want to get my hands on the forge world weathering powders and their masterclass painting book first. Also, any idea on how to highlight it? i feel like line highlighting, like i normally do, may look off on something that big since it has so many panels, i also feel that drybrushing is out of the question since it is black. Any idea appreciated, thanks. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/#findComment-2305185 Share on other sites
Wolfeslad
Really well done, i'm loving the colour scheme, simply yet itimidatingly effective, they would look like a mirage charging at you on a battlefield! kudos matey B) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/#findComment-2305225 Share on other sites
Nicorex
Actually since your color scheme is Black and White, Why dont you paint the T-hawk White with black accents. This way you can weather, drybrush, pull out all the fancy stops. nurgling6688
eh, my main color is black, the only guys who are gonna be mostly white will be my chapter master and his honor guard, and captains will have a bit more. I was looking over the t hawk model to try and pick out the areas i am going to paint white, a few panels on the wings, a few on the turbo laser housing, and maybe the large angular recesses on the front that all of the SM vehichles have, as i have painted those white on all my other tanks. I am afraid they are to large though on the t hawk and will through off the balance, plus the foward heavy bolters go right over them the the hb will be black and red, which might clash and just be to much color in one spot. Edit: I am looking at this Raven Guard Thunderhawk as inspiration on how to paint the black. What does it look like they did? it almost looks like no highlighting at all and just weathering, http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/...sp?aId=6500025a Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/#findComment-2305254 Share on other sites
sisko11
Yup the tacs, were you so inclined, slight touchups with straight black would fix em up real pretty in literally a few seconds each, then again, I am sure you probably already know that lol. For the thawk, carefully edge highlighting would probably work best. However, If you can get your hands on an airbrush... then it would be a party! Personally, there are a ton of tutorials out there about weathering vehicles, and large models... places like tamiya, mig, all kinds of historical model sites are golden, I don't even know if I would bother shelling out for the FW book when there is so much already available. I hear their pigments are good though, you can also check out lbursleys pigments, I just ordered a ton from him. You can find his stuff at www.awesomepaintjob.com. Mig pigments are also supposed to be often, although if I remember correctly, shockingly FW powders actually come in on the cheap side! Age quod agis
And just think. The very first FW Thunderhawk that came to the US is sitting at the Glen Burnie bunker as a terrain piece (slightly destroyed), because it didn't have all the parts! (They couldn't get replacement parts at the time). So, I would think that your FW Thunderhawk is about par for the course (from what I've heard of others assembling them). A shame, since a lot of their stuff is really well done. I've never had a problem with them. And I really like the scheme you have there. Simple, and very effective! Marshal Rohr
I loved these guys back in the day, man! They inspired some of my more ambitious Templar conversions. Alas, I moved away from Greco-Roman themes, but I do count your Chapter as one my Templars Spiritual/Thematic Influences. nurgling6688
Im really honored to hear that some of you guys were inspired by my Chapter from that White Dwarf, i honestly had no idea. I didn't think anyone outside of my gaming group really knew who they were. My friends at the Chicago games day a few years ago would shout Sons of Dorn! instead of Waaaaghhh every time they had people do that. Having seen the new blood angel pictures i am pretty excited about the Sanguinary Guard. Deff gonna use those pieces to convert my Chapter Master and Honor Guard. Should have some updates on the T Hawk by tonight or tomorrow.
