Flesh tearers Sanguinary guard

Some of you might remember my old Flesh tearers army posted here around two years ago. (Here is a link.) Since they now have a new codex and some new shiny models I decided to add some units to the army. And the new Sanguinary guard models were just too cool to pass by.

I didn't want them all gold for two reasons. First, it wouldn't fit my army at all. The rest of the army is worn and toned down. a squad of golden marines would just look really out of place. And second, I don't think it looks good, even on a normal army. The models are very detailed and ornate, so painting them gold just pushes them over the top in my opinion. It may work for a character, but not really for a unit. So I painted them in my standard FT colours with some golden parts. That way, they still stand out from the rest of the army, but not too much.

Anyway, on with the pictures...

The entire unit.

First one, storming forward.

Second, also charging.

Third, armed with a Flesh tearer (Power fist).

Fourth. A bit more calm.

And finally the fifth one.

I am happy with the results allthough my photo skills are not that good.

So, what do you think?

Thank you!

@deadlift58: I used the same principles as simplified NMM. Each surface has a transition from dark blue to white and each adjecent surface has the opposite transition. So, for example, if one surface has white at the top and blue at the bottom, the surface next to it would have blue at the top and white at the bottom. And then I added the lightning bolts on top of that.

The colours used are Regal blue mixed with a little Enchanted blue, Enchanted blue, Ice blue and Skull white. Lots of thin, watered-down layers is the key.

really, really beautiful, and I'd agree that they're much nicer than the 'please-shoot-me-now' bright gold! kind of agree that the buzz-saw could be made to stand out a bit more, though, the PW blue idea sounds good...

anyway, great stuff!

i hate sanguinary guard and the sanguinor for their silly gold pretty boy look (sorry if i offended and BA players) but the scheme you have really shows their supremecy as well as the grittty, raw brutallity that the flesh tearers have about them.

Well done

These are miles better than the gold Sang Guard, and you've actually made me like the Sang Guard :D

I really love the worn down effect, the gems are amazing and the power weapons are just epic! :tu:

Would love to see more of your army! :D

Thank you!

Regarding the rest of my army, you can see the old models here.

I will post pictures of the new stuff I paint as soon as I get it ready. But I'm not a very fast painter... ;)

@Crazy Eight: Sorry, no commission. I don't have enough time to paint all the stuff I want to have in my own armies so there is definately not enough time to paint for someone else...

I must admit that these are so awesome miniatures that even long-time lurker like me has to come to praise them. I like the torn and suffered look you gave them, but still they look somehow "beautiful". I think that you wanted them to look like that. I just freaking love your blades and especially the jagged ones.

Only small critic comes from "flesh tearer". Compared to the other metallic parts it just don't fit in. It looks like you have rushed it. Blood don't turn into that purple even if it's dry. And metal colored part looks also messy, not in good way. I suggest that you could "clean it up". Make blood more red and even might do very small and precise highlighting.

But apart from that, well done and be proud from these fellows. Really good job.

The blood on the flesh tearer does look strange in these pictures. In reality it is painted red, with a thin coat of gloss varnish over to make it look fresh. In the pictures, the varnish captures the light and somehow makes the blood look purple.

Well if the camera is behind that color change and staff I must agree that these are maybe best sanquinary guards which I have seen. Where other people make them gold and stuff you did good choice by sticking in chapter colors. Good job.

I assume that you used scab red to paint blood in tearer?
