Painting Haunted/Pale/Daemonic Faces and Flesh

Pig Of Sparta

Recommended Posts

I tried this method out on a Daemon Prince Bust that I'm painting and it seemed to work quite well. A couple of Frater commented on it so I thought I'd put together this Tutorial so you can see how it's done. From the start I'd like to apologise for the quality of the photographs, trying to get my point and shoot camera to focus on something so small is not easy to do. Anyway on with the tutorial.

Firstly, these are the paints you'll need:

Chaos Black (for undercoating)

Space Wolves Grey

Skull White

Asurmen Blue Wash

Other colours for details are completely optional, however I used:

Baal Red Wash

Golden Yellow

Leviathan Purple Wash

Mechrite Red

Dheneb Stone

On to the actual painting:

Stage One; undercoat your chosen head/face with Chaos Black (either spray or from the pot it doesn't really matter)

Stage Two; paint the whole face/head with Space Wolves Grey

Stage Three; wash the Space Wolves Grey area with Asurmen Blue

Stage Four; highlight the face/head with Space Wolves Grey

Stage Five: paint a final harsh highlight of Skull White onto the most prominant areas.

Stage Six; thin down some Asurmen Blue with water and glaze the whole face/head with it

Finishing up; once the glaze from stage six is dry you can detail the face as you see fit. I used Baal Red to shade the eye sockets before adding a dot of Golden Yellow to the eyes. I then applied a glaze of Baal Red around the eyes to proved some shadow to the yellow eyes and to add some character to the face. The inside of the mouth eas painted Mechrite Red and the teeth were painted Dheneb Stone before the whole mouth was washed with Leviathan Purple. Once the wash was dry I re-touched the teeth with Dheneb Stone.

Once again I'd like to apologise for the picture quality, hopefully you can at least make out some of the detail in them. I'll try to take some more photos of the finished head in better light, and if there's interest I can paint another head and try to get better photos of the actual stages.

Thanks

James

Thanks Father Of Incendia. I managed to get a slightly better photo of the finished prduct this evening:

Hopefully that shows a bit more clearly how all the stages come together at the end

Thanks for the compliment Guyver, it was well timed :D I've just been browsing some of the GD entries on the GW website and thinking how far below them my painting skills are.

I've just had a thought, one that would bear trying out if it hasn't been done already. If you kept the process for painitng the white the same as I detailed above but changed the wash you were using I think you'd get some equally 'spooky' results, particularly from Baal Red, Leviathan Purple and Thraka Green.

cheers

James
