Cathedral Display Board Log

So me and a friend are attending a doubles tournament in a month, and I'm building a huge cathedral display board for the tournament. I figured because I'd be putting such a large amount of effort into it, I'd want it to be usable as terrain during games too(rather than just dust collector like previous display boards). So it's constructed out of a framed cork board as the base, and the 3 pieces of MDF which fit inside the frame and can be pulled out to use on a gaming board. I've only been working on it for 4 days so far, and the progress has been slow. The cathedral is based(highly) off of Las Lejas cathedral in Columbia. (Google it, you'll get what I was going for)

What I have left to do before the painting stage -

(1)finish up the building parts with plasticard made sections, which consists of making 3 sections on the rear, and one of the front with a large oculus and and extra story on the first section

(2) Adding a lot of rubble and finishing up MDF which is currently bare

(3) Sand it

(4) add a trim around the base of the trim

(5) Maybe MAYBE build a few gothic spires out of plasticard. We'll see how crazy the walls drive me first.

Very impressive so far. Can't wait to see some texture added to the rubble. Also, I'm curious how you intend to coat the foam to make it more durable from wear'n'tear and whether you intend to make an altar area for this cathedral.

Mind if I ask your process for carving in the tile into the foam? I assume at the very least a straight-edge, but I would think a razor would make too thin a line to form the indentation shown here.

(oh, and you misspelled Cathedral in the thread title)

Thanks for the thumbs-up so far.

Question answer time:

1)The foam tile was really easy actually, all I used was a pencil and a ruler to do it, and I haven't really planned on wear and tear yet - I may just seal the whole thing to prevent damages.

2)As for an altar, I would like to do one(I think I may have a metal one kicking around somewhere), but it all comes down to time. I expect this to take quite the large amount of time to finish still.

Not much progress today, and probably will be only update for the weekend. Added Columns for support, some more roof and changed up a wall section.

@ teku - yes I used those two kits, and there may be some parts from the manufactorum, but I'm not sure right now. I was given 5-6 already built buildings from a friend who didn't want them, so i broke them down to make it.

Weekend Update: WIP plasticard walls above entrances towards rear of the chapel. Going to GS up some skulls on them, so they tie in better with the COD sprues. Side question: does the broken one look kind of lousy? I'm really not to happy with it. Let me know.

Each section seperated so it can be used as individual terrain peices(after tournament)

Enjoy. Tomorrow I spray the building sprues. Now my question is - invest in a spray grey or manual dry brush the entire thing?

Spent a good portion of today so far painting up the board. Here is my progress so far.

Update. The first section is complete. The pictures have a bit higher contrast than in actuality; the brown wash on the building isn't as drastic on the actual model.

Second section complete! The tediousness of all the detail is starting to kick in, and progress is slowing down. It has to be done for a month tomorrow.
