abraxus
So after looking for months at all the truescale marine projects out there, I finally decided to give it a try. I've always liked the story and fluff behind marines, but never made an army of them becuase of the horrible scaling (really? your imperial guard trooper is as tall as my 8 foot tall angel of death? REALLY?). I spent a few additional week trying to decide on a chapter. I picked up a few different novels on different chapters and began reading, to see if inspiration would take me. After reading the Blood ravens, both space wolf, blood angels, chrimson fists, salamanders, and Ultramarines omnibuses (yes ALL of them in the past maybe 6-8 weeks!). I came to a decision.... I had no idea what chapter to do!!! I wanted to do them all. Then I stumbled across the Deathwatch. PERFECT!! So here are my first few humble attempts at begining a Deathwatch army. Watch Commander Danek
Hate the plastic shoulderpad, but that is my only critique. Conceptually and in execution these are amazing. Gods, you even have that thing attached to the left arm - that disk thing that is standard in DW artwork. Is that also from the Grey Knights? abraxus
Correct. I had a box of the grey knight terminators as well as a TON of regular terminators. I've just been mixing and matching parts as I go. Those Grey knight termie torsos are a godsend when "true-scaling". I agree with the plastic shoulder pads. I like the "inscribed" look of the metal ones, but I couldn't have enlarged them like I did with these, the inscriptions wouldn't have gone all the way to the new plasti-card "lip". abraxus
Watch Commander Danek: I had only ever glanced at the Deathwtch shoulders available from GW. Saw a close-up of a model with one today and said " " Holy cow do they look nice, too bad they are metal. So I managed to finish another member of the squad this weekend. I'm fairly happy with him, but I do have two issues: Meet Veteran Brother Skorven of the Red Talons: http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/IMG_6140.jpg From this angle you can see one of my two issues with him, I was in such a rush to finish him, that I didn't neatly cut out the chapter symbol. I really need to cut it off and try again: http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/IMG_6141.jpg From here you can see the bionic leg (they are an offshoot of the Iron Hands chapter after all!) http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/IMG_6142.jpg The second issue is only really noticable if you view from straight on (I couldn't get a good picture of it). The Right arm isn't snug up against the body, and if you follow it up you can tell it wouldn't ever actually touch the shoulder of the torso. Maybe I'll just say his right arm is bionic inside the armour... And a new group shot. I realized that I had forgotten to finish the purity seals on the serg, so I finished them as well: http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/IMG_6144.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2925441 Share on other sites
Watch Commander Danek
The arm I bet is not as noticable as you fear mate. Do try to keep those discs on the elbows if you got the bitz though. Besides the shoulderpad that is just one of those perfect DW trademarks. abraxus
I agree. I'm going to take a shot at moulding one and then adding them to all. They are one of hte things that I love about teh grey knight termies I want to keep. Watch Commander Danek
I admit if I were to ever redux my Deathwatch I'd do that. Knowing me I'd also dremel down the rim on the metal pads and attach the carefully sliced off rim from the plastic ones. Gives us our perfect shoulderpads already GW! ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2925881 Share on other sites
abraxus
Finished another Deathwatch over the weekend. Meet Veteran Brother Koltak of the Lamenters. This was my first time attempting to add some battle damage. I think it turned out Ok, for a first try anyway. http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Koltakrt.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Koltaklt.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Koltakfront.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Koltakback.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2930307 Share on other sites
ephrael
These are some excellent conversions you have going on there. I especially like the freehand on the Lamenter's Chapter Badge. What type of putty are you using to fill in the legs? You have done a very good job making them smooth. I don't know if it's just the angle of the picture of the Red Talons marine's left arm but it looks like the wrist is rotated 180 degrees the wrong way. If his left hand is holding the forward grip of the bolter then the wrist skull on the wrist should be facing the ground. abraxus
Hmmm... I never looked at it that way. I assumed the gauntlet rotated inside the bracer, so the bracer would maintain its position relative to the uper arm and elbow joint, but the hand and glove would twist without moving the bracer. I'm just using greenshtuff to fill the gaps in the legs, using Lamenter's guide. I'm to the point now that I can ALMOST do it without requiring any sanding... almost :). For Koltak... do the arms look like they are the right proportion? I extended the wrists slightly the same way as the upper and lower legs. I thought the forearms of the other ones seemed a little off (short). Do you use clay shapers on the greenstuff? I have found them to be greatly helpful working on putty. You should really invest in a set of them if you don't have them already . The arms look alright on all of your marines, I think that the stock length looks ok and the extension is subtle so either way works for me. G3rman
I love them, especially that skin you did for the salamander! Not obsidian dark but not just a simple brown, very nice. The red eyes make it particularly intimidating. abraxus
Little WIP of the two current additions. A Dark Angel (Plama Cannon) and a Shadow Guardian (still working on the jump pack). Currently they're both just tacked together. This is my first atempt at GS robes, so thoughts, critics are appreciated http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/sneakpeak1.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/SneakPeak2.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/sneakpeak3.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2931955 Share on other sites
abraxus
So I'm almost finished with Veteran Brother Saiko of the Dark Angels. This guy was a lot of firsts for me: First time sculpting robes, first time painting robes, first time attempting a plasma coil effect and first time trying out OSL. I think I was marginally successfull at a few, not so much at others but overall he seems to fit the stoic personality of the Dark Angels (IMHO). There are still some details to paint and I need to touch-up the highlighting on the black, apparently I used a bit too thick of a layer of wash. Thoughts? http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Saiko1.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Saiko3.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Saiko2.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2935543 Share on other sites
Foxmarine
never thought that you could use a plasma cannon that way. Looks great Too late now, but I don't think you could still were a helmet over the cloak hood Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2935565 Share on other sites
Komodo
Badass deathwatch! Too late now, but I don't think you could still were a helmet over the cloak hood You don't need to wear it over. It's pretty logical, that he putted his hood up, after putting the helm off. It's kinda cold and grimdark in 41 millenium :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2935615 Share on other sites
DarKHaZZ13
Thye look ace. My only problem with them is that the powerplants look really, really small. abraxus
I partially agree. I was on the fence for awhile, and dabbled with trying to enlarge the existing backpack, but then it would be too flat from front to back. I would love to find a way to scale up the backpack about 1-1.5 mm, maintaining the total aspect ratio but attempts I made to do this looked worse then 50 feet below sub-par. The current power-plants with the exception of the heavy weapons troopers are attached with a tiny, tiny drop of glue, so if I can get an upscaled one to look correct, I can easily swap them out. I had the same issue with the helmeted heads. They are not to scale with the bare heads (and the bare heads seemed work well with the truescaling), but that was easy enough to remedy by just having the helmets hanging from the belts, in the hands, etc. so that they were there for the image recognition but weren't a focal point of the model. Okidus
These are awesome. I've made several DW squads over the years but only recently decided to make some TS. I found this thread while doing some research, I'm glad it is relatively current. Keep it up! I am currently running a hybrid Deathwatch RPG/40K game with some coworkers. Here are some Standard scaled DW I made but have mostly abandoned at this point. http://okidus.blogspot.com/2011/09/tfd-dea...-fire-wasp.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2951487 Share on other sites

abraxus
I've been slow on updates this month due to the holidays (and having a 15 month old makes holidays even more fun) and trying to decide which model to enter in the conversion challenge of the 5 I've been working on. I've finally decided what my entry will be, so here's the other two most complete of the remaining 4. I have to rework the GS on the legs, I was interrupted by the little one and forgot to come back to work on smoothing until after it had cured.... oops. The other 2 guys are only rough (one is only a left arm!) so I won't post them yet @Watchcaptainazra... --- Thanks! Maybe I'll win the conversion challenge! Even if I don't, it was a blast working on the model and I have SOOOO many "fluffy" storied bouncing around in my head it may just explode. @Okidus --- I'm glad I could provide some inspiration! One of the things I love about this hobby is how everyone feeds and builds on other's ideas. In a day and age of "that was my idea, now I'm going to sue you!" it's a very pleasant change @Doghouse --- and speaking of people with inspring ideas! You work has been an inspiration for me as I started looking into truescaling. And onto the pics: Space Wolf. I'm a little stuck on what to do with the bare front torso plate.... any suggestions? http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Spacewolffront.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/Spacewolfright.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/SPaceWolfbackleft.jpg Blood Angel Apothecary http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/BloodAngelfront.jpg http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/BloodAngelrear.jpg Group shot http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx27/Glenstrom/DeathwatchTruescale/group.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2951949 Share on other sites
Sanguine Marine
Those are looking great!!! For the space wolf, I think the bare breastplate works fine, or you could make a particular big gash in his armour there. Like he has been scratched by one of those big fenrisian wolves, but left the scar to remind him of his past. Just my 2 cents to this biiiiiig project ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242013-truescale-deathwatch-space-marines/#findComment-2952137 Share on other sites
