waargh!
We are the Space Marines The Champions of Humanity Emperor's chosen warriors For every one of us that falls in battle one hundred enemies will die. -Anon. (3rd Ed Rulebook) This diary is basically an attempt to build the Imperial Fist army that I wanted to build when I was 11 and starting out 3rd ed 40k but didnt have any of the modelling or painting skillz to do so. The army will be built using all my favourite marine bits from the whole line, as well as being modeled true-scale on 40mm scenic bases. Ill also be trying my hand at casting imperial fist symbols and junk with 'blu-stuff' instant molds. In-game the army will be represented with the Grey Knight codex 'Draigowing' list format to coincide with the giant marines on 40mm bases. Im aiming for a movie marines kind of feel, 10 dudes standing against 1000, a really fluffy army if i can pull it off (which might be a bit of a challenge after my last army  ) im using this painting as my reference point for the colourscheme http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/69612.jpg im using the chapterhouse resin kits to save time which will (hopefully) allow me to focus on just blinging them up and painting them kosher in terms of countsas: plasma guns will be psycannons bolters count as storm bolters combat knives are swords thunder hammers are thunder hammers and chainswords count as halberds http://cdn2.gamefront.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/wh4k1.jpg As the army has such a low model count im treating it more like a force composed entirely of independent characters. This means ill be spending a fair amount of time switching combinations of bits around beforehand until I get the right kind of individualism from each model. heres some dudes ive bin playing with. Im not sure which way to go with the backpacks - the chapterhouse ones might work if i add the vents from GW ones instead...but then they might be a bit too gigantic? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120701.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120705.jpg The only other models I have in this house are space crusade mans but itll have to do for the scale ref http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120713.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/ Share on other sites
waargh!
I got a set of mechanical hammers and pre-heresy terminator shoulderpads from maxmini to spice models up a bit. I wasnt sure if the shoulderpads would fit right but i think they turned out ok for making character models stand out http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/marINES.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120727.jpg i should be getting my instant mold by the end of the week so ill be able to start some more interesting things besides blu tacking crap together and cleaning mold lines  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3057762 Share on other sites
sar mikael
looking good. those kits look really nice too. for the back packs id go with the chapter house ones with gw vents- i saw a guy off worthy painting do it for his true scale dark angels and they looked mint. in fact he has posted them on here too, cant remember the wip title though. loving the captain thunder hammer dude. ill be watching this. Brother-Captain Sharp
Man, that cube thread was worth a read. Thanks for the link. ;) As for these marines: they're very promising! I like the large variety of bitz and armor styles, definitely fits what comes to mind when I think of armor that has been customized and replaced over decades. My only critique is that I feel the models might be just a little too lanky. However, I like my Marines to be built like tanks, so if you like 'em more power to ya. :) Cheers. I'll be watching for more, especially paint. :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3057827 Share on other sites

I havent tested it yet but i have a whole slew of pouches, pistols, knives and purity seals im planning on encrusting the models with to bulk out their legs and waists. ill have to do a test model on the weekend to see looking good. those kits look really nice too. for the back packs id go with the chapter house ones with gw vents- i saw a guy off worthy painting do it for his true scale dark angels and they looked mint. in fact he has posted them on here too, cant remember the wip title though. loving the captain thunder hammer dude. ill be watching this. yeah i have seen that army and didnt even notice how he'd done the backpacks :P seems like the way to go...and i also wonder what the GW backpacks would look like with the chapterhouse vents stuck on Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3058402 Share on other sites
Kizzdougs
Awesome stuff waargh!! I just ordered myself a couple of chapter house true scale kits so i was very excited to see this thread. Its always great to see what other people come up with. I haven't decided on a chapter yet, I'll probably just play around with the kits for a bit. here is a video of those True scale DAs sar mikael mentioned. waargh!
this just in: instant mold is the most awesome thing to happen in modelling since , it feels kind of partially illegal though depending on what you do with it it feels kinda like burning copies of albums/games you already own, but you can like, remix that whole album and print hundreds of copies of it ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3059216 Share on other sites

waargh!
I started molding some custom shoulderpads with shriney skull things and imperial fist symbols. These are test molds to see where to make the cut for the 2-parter...hence theyre a bit off. I also made a testmold for backpacks with altered vents which actually broke as i was making the mold...but i still managed to salvage the majority of it (you can see the screwup on the vent). You can also see the test cast of a helmet which kind of failed - too many nobbly bits on a little thing are hard to cast. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120757.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120768.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120764.jpg Also lastly here is my updated torso mold (added aquila) test cast as well as a shield made with a 1-part mold. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120778.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3062333 Share on other sites
Styg Greybeard
These are looking good. Can I ask what you're using to make your molds ? I've done some simple stuff with instant mold but had to use RTV rubber molds and cast in 2 part resin to get good results on my wolf head back packs and my own actual scale legs. Anyway you're doing a grand job with these. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3062507 Share on other sites
waargh!
Im using instant molds, i dont think im doing anything special though, from what ive learned from using the product it rewards patience and its worthwhile just making heaps of attempts at a mold until it comes out right my process is as follows; press softened mold into a coke bottle lid, jam the item intended to be cast really firmly into the mold, reheat the mold in hot water and press it all in again to ensure there are no gaps, then i cut off the rough top edge along where i want the mold line to be before covering the top part of the item with more instant mold to make the second part of the mold and jam it all really hard down into the bottle lid let it cool and the two bits of mold should still ply apart as the instant mold has trouble sticking to itself if it screws up chuck the mold back in the hot water and try again :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P11207OOOOO71.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3062523 Share on other sites
Styg Greybeard
Ok, thanks for the info. I have tried jamming the instant mold in a small lego box but never thought to reheat when it was in the lego. I'm getting excellent results casting in resin but making the molds out of RTV rubber is time consuming and can be expensive. Will give your method with the instant mold a try. waargh!
So this is basically an instant mold and greenstuff recasting project? What? As opposed to a 'buying a box of guys, sticking them together and painting them' project? Because I will be painting them when theyre ready to be painted...theyre just not ready yet champ <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3063671 Share on other sites
Ironblood
nah thats fine. I've jsut seen other sites have major issues with blatant recasting threads and whatnot. Whatever floats your boat. They look prety good so far either way (especially for press mold casts). waargh! The B&C is fine with showing your re-cast stuff, just don't sell it :) I'm really liking these guys, I defended this kit over in Amicus when it was getting slammed, and now that I can see them being used, I'm glad I did. This thread and the DA one have convinced me to grab some of these kits. Keep'm coming, cheers, Jono Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3064607 Share on other sites
subtlebrush
Big fan of Tru-Scale and I'm really liking what your doing here. Im very hit and miss on the Chapterhouse kit. I would probably modify some parts as you did and recast them myself. Sculpting every single figure is soul draining. Cannot wait to see some paint! This thread and the DA one have convinced me to grab some of these kits. Are you talking about the Dark Angels on youtube? The ones that are a blend of Chapterhouse and the now discontinued War Smiths kit? I'm so angry that I missed the chance to at least order one of those War Smiths kits..... ZAChos
I like it, but feel that maybe the feet could do with some work when the next cast is made. They just seem a bit too chunky. Can't wait for paint. Oh, and fancy kneepads For The Win. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3064783 Share on other sites

waargh!
heres a wip pic of the first guy to give a sense of the colours - im trying for a fairly muted pallet, im thinking a bit more red in the mix might be good though http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120829.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/waargh/P1120832.jpg ill take better pics once hes done, now that i look more closely im noticing how off the colours are in the photos compared to the actual model Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252126-truescale-imperial-fist-army/#findComment-3065315 Share on other sites
subtlebrush
Wow! I really like that scheme. I think its pretty close to what you were using for reference. @grotsmasha: Yeah same guy. MordentHex
They look great keep up the great work. Will this be an army and if so for fun or tournament play? For fun i se no problem but in the touri seen i think people would have a problem with so much of your models not being GW. We all know the kind of players that flock to tournaments like flies on poo. So maybe something to consider. I would hate to hear you did and couldn't play because of your ingenuity in model making.
