So I thought i'd share a project i've been doing using 3dsMax9 for the past several months.

The Mars Class Battlecruiser, a 3km long Imperial Warship armed with a Nova Cannon, Weapon Batteries and Launch Bays.

Note: I'm not posting every image as there are over a hundred of them.

(The close-detail shots are of the uppermost bridge tier.)

Wow that looks awesome, you going to finish it or was it test work?

Oh it'll be finished, my biggest hurdle at the moment is A: RAM and B: Processor power.

It still receives work but without more RAM and CPU power it is very very slow going. (She's over half a million polygons at the moment and rising.)

By the power of Gray skull thats an impressive render!!! Maybee, if its possible on the program your using, you can split up the model into different part and put them away into a parts bin to continue with other parts while the 'big bitz' that require the computing power are not on the screen? if that makes any sense?

Very impressive sir, i take my hat off to you.

S.O.N.

It is possible, until you hit the one main hurdle...

I basically use all the parts for scaling, for example, the Hydra Batteries (there are about 50+ at the moment) are all truescale to Forgeworlds measurements. However I do try to hide what I can :P

Totally insane.

Better do other or you're gonna get heavily spammed spam.gif dry.gif !!!

DS

No fear there. The next on the checklist is a Chaos Cruiser, class hasn't been chosen yet.

(However I tentatively suggest that other Imperial vessels done will take less time due to being able to recycle parts ;))

wow nice work!! whats you comp specs?

now all you need is to build it from plasticard

................

My Specs are an Athlon AMD 1.6gh and 1.75gb Ram and a 125mb Graphics Card.

As for building it in plasticard... thats a definate no, assuming a 2 Metre tall Space Marine (Tabletop Scale), a 3 Kilometre long Warship comes out between 180 to 187.5 Feet long. Or roughly 30.8 Six foot gaming tables long. :jaw: :D :jaw: Feth me... I didn't realise it was that bad :cuss

thats just amazing! i never thought that anyone would actually try making a ship!

I've been making the Ship models for a Dawn of War "Battlefleet Gothic" mod for quite some time, and before that I was doing about a year trying to model them. Orks, Chaos, Necrons, Eldar, Imperial, Space Marine etc.

I just have a love for 40k Ships.

That is an awsome model, I have always loved the Armoured Prow on Imperial vessels

That same Prow was one of the hardest pieces to make, even now it's not a perfect GW prow. (I think mines a touch meaner ;) )

Some More Older Renders

And some Brand Spanking NEW ONES! (Some Zooming Out and inclusion of more Towers with Hydra's on them.

@Louie: No, a 30ft Plasticard model might not be too bad for some, its the 187 foot model thats the trouble. (The thing would be worth a million points easy! Almost 100+ Strength D weapons with 4+ foot blast radii etc :P

@Martox: Yes i've thought about texturing it, sadly texturing is where my ability falls down. I cheat and use a program called SymbiontMax by Darktrees for procedural textures. However for WIP shots I stick to the clay renders ;)

@Winterdyne: I do plan on doing an animation with her at one point. It may take a month or two to render but hey *shrugs* I'll be getting a second machine before I do though. (Of course those batteries will be firing :P )

@wiplash: Of course it looks bare! No Textures and its the current area of modelling. The extra step zoom was more to demonstrate how small the detailed section was in the overall.

Procedurals can make some great effects, if you give it some thought and/or if your lucky enoguh to have a real time texture editor ala Lightwave or somesuch you can see what your texture looks like instantly. You know what I mean ;)

Still, got plans for any other ships of the line? I'd love to see a Battle Barge or something rendered out as such. I'd do so, but I lack the motivation to do so these days XD

The next on the list for my "Ultra" detail project is a Chaos Cruiser at the moment, followed by either an Eldar or Ork vessel.

However doing Battleships or Battlebarges is probably off the table. (I'm struggling with 3km of ship, i'd be buggered if I upped it to 8km! *Battlebarge*)

  • 4 months later...

Its been a while but here I am with an Update. I didn't like the old Hangars. They didn't look like they belonged at all.

Ok I've done a little work on detailing the Hangars with a pair of extra Hydra Defence guns and the Control tower for the hangars themselves. (Why burden the bridge with such minor details.) And taken a few new snapshots of the hull B)

I used Aeronautica Imperialis references from Forgeworld for the concepts.
