[Commission] Ultramarines 2nd Co army - BIG IMAGE

The first part of a large Ultramarines Commission, all varnished and ready for packing. The purity seal really made a difference, the army's now very uniform. As is usual, I spend a day revisiting the highlights on everything, just making sure it was all consistent and sharp. Very happy with the result:

Lovely colours and the look of the army is very consistent and coherent. The marines themselves are very characterful and the squad at rest is a nice touch. Out of interest was the army painted with the basecolours from an airbrush or by hand? The colours are very smooth.

Colour me jealous.

The marines are painted using a zenital highlighting technique with an airbrush over black. Sharp highlights and further glazing and blending is done by hand later to smooth things up, increase definition and correct any mistakes. The finish was actually a little grainy before the purity seal went on. That stuff is lovely.

Fantastic minis! Only pick I notice is that the sternguard veteran sergeant (the one carrying the power fist) is denoted as a veteran, while another mini's denoted as a veteran sergeant (red-white helmet). Fine with me, but I don't play Ultramarines, they might be more picky on that matter.

How do you switch the backpack for the jumppack for Sicarius with lightning claws? Magnets?

I've updated the first pic with a much less offensive background.

Got any more pictures of the Sergeant of the Second squad? The one with the powersword.

Sure:

Unpainted, showing where I used vallejo liquid putty to smooth up the green:

A squad montage, including that sergeant:

May I ask which varnish you used to coat the models? The result looks amazing! Does it make any difference on the models themselves? I want to try it on my metallic models....

It's Purity Seal. It does make a difference - it softens contrast a little, and is a satin finish. I gave the models a couple of good coats. You can see the difference by comparing the squad montage in this post with the shot of the same squad in the first post (after varnish). Lenses and gems were picked out with gloss after the Purity Seal.

Yeah - the marine painted as the sergeant for the Sternguard just looked more 'sergeanty' with the pointing pose and the iron skull honour on the shoulder. Also the power-fisted marine's helmet wouldn't have looked so good with the stripe. As they're all the same stat wise, other than equipment, it makes little odds gameplay wise.

The Sicarius is magnetised, using 3 1x3mm magnets (one in the body, one in each pack). In addition, a small hole is drilled in the back just at the bottom of the 'neck' and a short pin is in the banner backpack. This prevents the backpack falling to the side by pivoting on the magnet.

...I'm curious as to where you found the chain on the tactical marines' shoulders.

It's 9ct gold fine necklace chain. Gold cuts easy with a knife, so it's good to work with - you can easily get half-links for adding hanging decorations.

This is one of the best ultra armies I've seen. The choice of the blue is simply perfect. It gives the marines "real life" tone that I like. The most of the ultra armies has this strange smurf colour which gives then a little "funny" aspect. Those are soldiers, not smurfs.

I would like to see the marneus comand squad painted by you...(and a tutorial for the blue of course!)

I love all of the little conversions you added in there, I kept noticing more as I glanced over the pics again. I might have to steal that sgt pose =) I like all of the extra bitz on the rhino as well, I thought the camo netting piece was pretty neat.
