averykess
I thought I'd show the first 3 of my Sternguard I have built. They aren't quite finished and I still need to make 7 more of them. They are true scale/actual scale/heroic scale/biggerized. The Sergeant's powerfist and storm bolter arms are magnetized C&C welcome. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3394/4617254853_c3a78eed37_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4617869360_9b82d8cf94_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4006/4617869322_c1e3ce0b28_o.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201742-raven-guard-sternguard-wip/ Share on other sites

cathar the great
The legs and torso on the left marine is pretty much exactly what I wanted to do on all my Chaos Marines. I like them a lot. The aiming Marine is also nice and bulky. It seems that Dan the Demon and others have started a new trend for people to put much more time into their miniatures, and I like it ^^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201742-raven-guard-sternguard-wip/#findComment-2403533 Share on other sites

The spots are punched out of .5mm plasticard. Nice, i like the combi weapon on the middle dude, very cool I still have to figure out how to mount a fuel canister, but I am pleased with it in general. I may break out one of the OOP hand flamers I have in a bag and use the canister off of that. Asrech
These look awesome. My only complaint is the fact that there are 3 and not 10 :) As for the strap, It should be pretty simple to greenstuff. Roll a cable of greenstuff, flatten it out. Let it half-harden untill it can be bent without loosing it's shape, cut it straight, add it on and let harden. Good luck, and keep it up! Tx_gamer
What are you using to extend the legs like that? I really like it as a simple yet very effective way to show a 7-foot Marine over the average human. ephrael
loving the details on the beak! I agree whole-heartedly, I think you should do all the marines with MK6 or 7 helmets corvus and beakies all the way. averykess
What are you using to extend the legs like that? I really like it as a simple yet very effective way to show a 7-foot Marine over the average human. The way I do things, my marines come out about 2-3mm taller than a normal marine. The legs are extended by using 1mm plasticard. I was inspired by this thread http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...c=31681&hl=. I modified the technique a bit to make it simpler since I am lazy. I just chop through the thigh and add the height there without repositioning the legs. I use a standard hole puncher to punch out 1/4" discs from the plasticard, which is slightly larger than the diameter of the leg, and then just file it down. I don't bother making the chest larger. Once you put the shoulder pads on the marine, it is hard to see a difference anyway. I do extend the torso as well, but I don't cut the belt buckle off to reposition it, I just make the belt wider by 1mm with plasticard on the bottom. The tutorial above instructs that a strip of card is curved around the bottom edge of the belt. I thought that was too fiddly so I just took a part of the sheet I'd already cut discs out of and glued that the the bottom of the torso, centering the hole and then filing the excess to back to the sides of the belt. I also put 1mm soles on the boots. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/201742-raven-guard-sternguard-wip/#findComment-2407409 Share on other sites
Tx_gamer
Cool, you have shown me a truley awesome way to do my army ... now I have to redo the marines I've painted already!! So I'm clear ... the 1mm thick plastic card is used in the legs and under the feet? I'm a little thick here .. how do you place the plastic card at the waist? Could you post a picture? I have to admit, I am really liking the way it came out on this guy. I will definitely do my Vanguard as all beakies and magnetized arms for all lightning claws too. averykess
Okay, here are some quick shots of how I make my marines taller. The first shot shows all the parts you will need. The plasticard is 1mm thick from Evergreen Scale Models. I used a heavy duty 1/4" scrap-booking hole puncher made by McGill to punch the circles out. You will need 5 of these circles for this method. Glue 3 of the circles together in a stack and let it dry. Cut most of the dome off of the top of the legs. Cut the thighs just below the detailing. Try to keep these cuts as flat and straight as possible. If they are not flat, it makes it more difficult to reassemble. You can correct any errors with a needle file. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4634525524_32afa5bdd6_o.jpg Glue the 3 stack to the top of the waist. Glue 1 circle to each leg as shown. I do this part before I have cleaned the mold lines off of the model so that I can use them to realign the leg so it doesn't take an unnatural bend in the final form. You can experiment with foot placement if you want some variety, but you have to make sure the upper and lower parts of your cut line up. You will also want to cut out a part of the sheet that you have been punching holes out of. This will become the belt extension. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/4633927093_0a753736a8_o.jpg Trim the flat piece with the hole into a more rounded shape and file or cut down one side of it fairly close to the hole. On the marine torso, file the bottom of the existing belt to make the surface even and slightly flat so the extension will stick to it. You should also file along the back side of the belt buckle so the white piece will fit up against it. Glue it in place as shown. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4633927181_4ae825b273_o.jpg Once this is dry, trim down the white piece so that it is flush with the belt piece already on the torso. I use a hobby knife to get the rough shape and then file until they are flush. On the legs, trim and file the top into an new dome shape. Trim and file the leg extensions so that they are flush and seamless to the legs. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4633927297_4e55bc9df3_o.jpg For the soles, I use a textured sheet of 1mm thick plasticard. I cut out rough shapes and glue them to the soles. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4012/4633927397_1dff40098e_o.jpg I then trim them to the general shape of the foot. On the torso, I usually cut a bevel on the inside of the new belt section to make it easier to fit the new waist into the torso. You may or may not be able to see that bevel in this picture. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3392/4634526220_1173b1124b_b.jpg I then trim and file the soles flush to the existing foot. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3338/4634526322_83983a1a5a_o.jpg That's it! Dry fit the pieces and then glue them up. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4634526424_80e25f5776_o.jpg I usually put grenades on either side of the belt buckle to cover up any transitional issues the belt might have around the buckle (not pictured).
