Noob Painter - Help with FW Painting Guide Sons of Horus

So this is my first project after a long hiatus and I need help painting Sons of Horus. The guide looks a little too complex for me (with things like 1/4 of 4 types of greens, etc) so what's the best alternative using the least amount of paints possible for a beginner painter?

Thank you for any help!

Having mused over that myself for a while, I firmly believe that FW had used non-GW paints, (they did for Alpha Legion and Salamanders, for example) and then when they had to actually publish it, they needed to make sure it was GW compliant.

I have no idea how they expect people to actually use that guide. I for one am bewildered by it, although I'm not a great painter at all.

There are a few people on here who do have really great SoH color schemes, you could try checking them out.

All I can say is, good luck!

My colour is a little lighter than the FW green, but I really like how it looks:

The green is super easy:

Vallejo USMC tank crew

Coella green shade wash

Highlight back up with tank crew

Army builder strong tone wash

Highlight back up with tank crew

Final highlight of Vallejo 323 USMC highlight

Nice and simple!

Here's what I use:

Basecoat: 50/50 mix Caliban Green &Sotek Green

Wash with Coelia Greenshade

Highlight: Add Celesta Grey to basecoat mix.

Final Highlight: Sybarite Green

And here's what it looks like once painted:

Best bet is to mix up pots using those colours if you want to replicate them near enough. Buying 4 pots of each, and 4 spare paint pots, you can mix the paints in enough quantity at one go for most of your painting needs.

The instructions themselves are pretty good. I would use an airbrush/apraygun to basecoat the figures with the paint mix though..

You may as well just begine practicing mixing paints early - FW models are deserving of the best paint job you can pull off and that may involve mixing paints at least teehee.gif

I suppose this is an old thread and sorry for threadomancy but all of the links are dead. And as Betrayal at Calth is coming out I thought maybe someone could post the FW recipe. I don't mind mixing paints, it's what I bought all of my spare Vallejo bottles for.
