True Scale DIY Chapter 'The Angels Meliora'

Recommended Posts

Need y'alls opinion.

I want to bulk up my ironclad's chainfist, but I can't physically increase the size of the dread's chainfist... my sculpting skills just aren't there. I came up with the solution of putting two chainsword blades on each side of the blade.

While I do dig the look, I feel like the chainfist is almost headed into Ork or Chaos territory now.

What do you all think?

I like the look of it, and if you just fill the gap between the chainsword bits and the chainfist and make it look like an integral part of the weapon, which would seem more natural and organized, which by definition means less orkish. It's also proportional enough so as to not look to much like chaos in my opinion. But in the end it all comes down to you. If you think it's cool, definitely go for it, and if not, don't (though I would advice you to go for the first option  ).

So I'm gonna try an experiment with these guys and go for a high contrast effect.  I primed black, then lightly primed skull white from an above angle.  I'm gonna water down my paints a good bit and see if the varying shades of bass coat effects the layers of paint on top

This is just the first round of color and they've got a long way to go, but I think it's gonna come out cool.

Long overdue update!

Here's my paint scheme basically finished - few little details left, but I think y'all get the jist.

These Astartes are members of the 2nd company and see a lot of combat - so I wanted them to look pretty battle worn, but not in disrepair by any means.  They will eventually be part of a full 10 man tactical squad.

Also, if anyone has any advise on better glow effects of the eyes, I would appreciate it your thoughts.  I can't seem to get too much definition in the eyes.

Anyhow, here's a couple group pics and some individual ones as well.

Cheers,

W

Interesting work so far and a strong choice for colour scheme, brother. If you feel like expanding or exploring your DIY chapter, maybe map out it's origins and generally nail down what makes your chapter tick, then perhaps popping by the Liber might be a good idea. We've got a strong team of Mods willing to pitch in and our forum regulars would love to help too. ;)

Small update on the dread:

Chainfist has been greenstuffed, I think the two auxiliary chainblades look good next to the larger main blade now.  Also, got his arms magnetized.  I wanted the option to be able to swap out weapons.

These are great! I am surprised that you GS over the cataphractii legs, those are quite expensive on bitz sites and I'd expect people to use them precisely because they more or less resemble MK III  power armor legs. That's what I do, anyway, even if the rest of the armor is Mk. V-VII. But a job well done.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the encouragement!

@RRChristensen, yeah I wasn't sure about GS-ing over the cataphractii leg details either, but I wanted the extra bulk to be there to make them look more imposing.  Had to keep the details on the back upper leg tho for sure!  The bits aren't cheap, that's true - but this is my first re-entry into the hobby in about 15 years so I figured I'd spring a little extra for my display army :-)

Also, I do like that they have just a slightly different pose and overall look than standard GW termi legs.

@TheHydra, man I checked out some of your gallery stuff on here and your Ravenguard look great!  Nice work back at ya!

Hoping to have another update soon!

Here's the entire tactical squad.  They've got a long ways to go, but we'll get them there!  I wanted to get some different poses going and interestingly enough the bases I got off of ebay really helped with that.  They're really 3 dimensional and very busy, so getting the squad posed while still having the grids of the bases line up with each other was a fun challenge.  Anyhow, here's a group shot of the entire squad and some close ups.

Group shot

Yes, I doubled up on all their special weapons...  These Astartes are veterans of my chapter's 2nd company, so while they don't have access to the bling of say a sternguard squad from the 1st company, their armory is still pretty well stocked for sure.  Props to whoever can guess which 40k video game inspired this.

Still figuring out which close combat arm is gonna work best to chop up and attach a bolter to his right arm...

Like I said before, these bases are pretty busy and I was getting frustrated trying to figure out how I was gonna use this particular base with the cataphractii legs - everything was looking super super off balance and goofy, but I think this stance came out okay...

Hoping to have another update soon!

First off, some really nice work! Very well done marines! :biggrin.:

Props to whoever can guess which 40k video game inspired this.

hmmmm, i gotta say dawn of war, and since the only one i won is retribution, i'll go further by saying that one. Cuz i personally loadout my couple of squads to be 2 marine squads (one with sarg.) and 2 plasmas, then add a dev. squad with HB.

Only thing you're missing is a Land raider to match 'em. (HINT HINT:wink: )

i'd also like to see that dreadnought with paint soon. Good stuff! :biggrin.:

@ Argent Aquila, not sure if my skills are up to true scaling the land raider...  I seem to remember someone pulling that off with a bane blade somehow?

DoW for sure, but the orginal!  My favorite was putting two heavy bolters and two plasmas in one tactical squad.  So much dakkadakka and lo-fi graphics.  hahaa... good times.

Hoping to have some paint on the dread soon!

if you decide to try, i'm sure there are plenty of guys on here who can help with inspiration and techniques for scaling up the tank, i'd be really cool!

Awww i was close with the game name!!

OH! Here's and idea (if tanks are to rough), up-scaled assault marines with bigger jump packs! I can't say i've yet seen a quadra thruster jump pack, so make it one of those too! :tongue.:  (at least for a captain or sumthin'.)

@Argent Aquila, I dig the idea of a jump pack with quad thrusters... true scale chaplain, anyone?

W

YES PLEASE.

I didn't do quad thrusters, but rather put a Sang Guard pack in the middle of a normal one.

hey that's a really cool pair of conversions/kitbashes!

the thought i'd had when i pictured 4 thrusters was to compensate for the extra size of large scaled marines, but the chaplain you made doesn't look too out of scale TBH... it does convey the idea that it was a JUMP pack rather than one for sustained flight...

i have to say, even a regular jump pack with small thrusters at the side or backs of the greaves could look really cool. (i've also always wanted to make some for a contemptor dreadnought too, but less for jumping and more for sudden sprint boosts or whatever)

Aw geez, too many ideas. :wacko.: My bad.

@Grotsmasha, those are two really slick looking Astartes! The first one's jump pack almost looks like the middle thruster would provide the initial jump and midflight acceleration while the two side thrusters could rotate mid flight and help with small changes in flight path... Very cool conversions!

Another small update - rest of the tactical squad is primed and ready for color and my true scale army is shaping up!  Lighting and my iPhone were being finnicky today, sorry for the poor quality, but I think y'all get the idea.

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac284/wessmithjazz/40K%20Stuff/2ND%20COMPANY%20GROUP.jpg

I really wanted to use my old Dread from the nineties somehow, you can see him over there on the far left.  He'll eventually get the same quasi-true-scale dread job as my ironclad.  I'll be magnetizing his left arm to swap between his original metal lascannon and a FW plasmacannon.

Does anyone have the aquila strongpoint kit from GW?

I had this idea that I would get the strongpoint and make an 'Objective Secured' themed diorama for them...  Will that kit be large enough to display them all on?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • 2 weeks later...

Another small update on my ironclad.

Finally found a good proper bit to fill out the center of the power plant and then wanted to make the whole thing a little larger by making the smoke stack housings longer.  A finish layer of greenstuff is gonna go around what's there now.  Just a few other little green stuff details and I need to put some power cables around his torso/hip connector.

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac284/wessmithjazz/40K%20Stuff/DREAD%20POWER%20PLANT%201.jpg

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac284/wessmithjazz/40K%20Stuff/DREAD%20POWER%20PLANT%202.jpg

Finally, some melta ammo tanks will go below the left smoke stack and some heavy bolter ammo hoppers go below the right smoke stack, on either side of the power coil bit.

I think that will fill him out pretty well.

He's almost ready for some paint!
