LutherMax
Not sure if this particular captain is named in the fluff but I painted this guy up for a friend. Was fun to paint something other than red or green! http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-01.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-02.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-03.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-04.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/ Share on other sites
Brother Dallo
Very nice looking. I like the subtle weathering on the armour, and especially on the stripe down the armour. Keep up the good work. Dallo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/#findComment-3868377 Share on other sites
Son of Carnelian
Every time I see an Imperial Fist this nice, I feel a big tug of regret that I didn't start my own force of them. Fantastic work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/#findComment-3868425 Share on other sites
Lysimachus
Beautiful! As mentioned the yellow and chips are excellent, also like the effect on the head of the maul, what colours have you used for it? LutherMax
Thanks for the comments! @ Lysimachus, for the power maul I primed it white then used an airbrush to fade in a mix of 2 parts Light Sea Blue, 1 part Yellow and 1 part White (all Vallejo Model Air). I did this from the outside in keeping white in the centre, then edge highlighted with white. GrandMagnus
Oh brother, thats smooth and beautiful! EDIT: maybe I should do some IF at some point. Could you tell me how you did that yellow? LutherMax
Cheers Anaziel. The yellow... well, that was a bit experimental and passed a certain point I had to just use the paints I had to hand. It went something like this: - Primed white - Airbrushed basecoat Vallejo Model Air Yellow - Wash Reikland Fleshade - Then I layered Vallejo Model Color 'Flat Yellow' followed by 'Golden Yellow' (both thinned with Lahmian Medium) - Then another two coats of Reikland Flashade (very thin, 50/50 mix with Lahmian Medium – that stuff is amazing!) - Edge highlights Vallejo Model Color 'Pale Sand' Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/#findComment-3868498 Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
Would you recommend using lahmian medium for yellow paint to get a smoother layer? I havent tried it but I believe Ive read it somewhere before. LutherMax
I'd recommend Lahmian Medium for pretty much anything! Obviously the airbrushed yellow helped give a smooth coat but it was important to thin the subsequent layers and Lahmian Medium works much better than water. The main trick though is the Reikland Fleshshade - also thinned with Lahmian Medium. Liquid magic for yellow. LutherMax
Thanks both! @ Ludovic, this was a one off for a friend. Maybe if I weren't already doing Blood Angels and Orks I'd consider doing more Fists as I do like yellow, especially for the weathering opportunity it presents. As Psy-Crow suggested in my WIP thread, maybe I could do a couple of units of Lamenters to join the Blood Angels :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/#findComment-3868785 Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
Another question! (sorry if Im asking a lot :P ) When you shade using a mix with lahmiah media, do you apply it only in the shaded areas or do you cover the entire pauldron with it? LutherMax
I use the wash all over the armour. The Lahmian Medium stops it staining the surface and helps it run into recesses, create gradients etc. The trick is multiple thin coats. LutherMax
Thanks for the comments! I did get some feedback that the 'glowy' part of the power maul ended too abruptly against the haft, so I went back and blended it in a bit. Think it does look better now... http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-05.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-06.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-07.jpghttp://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Imperial-Fist-Captain-FINISHED-08.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299554-imperial-fists-captain-of-the-fifth/#findComment-3869091 Share on other sites

sockwithaticket
That's bloody fantastic. It's hard to pick out anything to praise above the other aspects. I prefer the maul in these more recent pictures, it looks like there's a greater colour contrast between the edges and the rest of it now, too. appiah4
My 2c, I believe it looked better when you didn't have the OSL on the maul shaft, but regardless, I LOVE what you've done with the maul. I will have to steal this and use it for my kitbashed chaplain. If you would do a video tutorial of painting that, I would be in your debt. Failing that, I'd be ok with an account of how you did it, at least. LutherMax
Thank you both! @ appiah5 I am going to go back and redo some edge highlighting on the maul, I think that will finish it off nicely :) Not sure when I'll be doing a similar one in order to make a video or pictorial tutorial but I did post the process up on my blog (http://www.themightybrush.com/?p=449).
