Brother Michaels
Hey guys! so I decided a scheme for my legion and its primarily silver using stormhost silver any tips on how make it not look like iron warriors? its a brighter silver but still looks way too close! The one thing I was thinking off is changing the trim colour to blue or something like that to make people not see just the silver Any tips? thanks! Doctor Perils
Maybe some sections of the armour in a different colour (like the blue you mention). For instance, the Dusk Raiders (who later become Death Guard) wear a red right arm. Halved or quartered schemes can be harder, but can be made to look nicely distinctive (in that case, blue and silver might not be the best choice as there are several rather well known canon chapters that use a blue and silver quartered or halved scheme.) Or you could look into free-handing some motifs (probably not lightning or fire, why not some kind of celtic swirls and stuff?) If they are silver, I suppose you want to press a "Knightly" theme? Perhaps some heraldry could go a long way? In that case, I'd be careful of not going too far onto the Grey Knight's turf. Brother Michaels
Yea I am trying to express that they are Knights, I do have the Calth shields to go on the torsos to represent that, they wont look like grey knights to be honest Ill try with the different colours and interesting with the red arm, I kind of like the idea of adding blue as another colour Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4515635 Share on other sites
MikhalLeNoir
How about silver and orange? Kick ass color combination. Wish I had the idea before I established my.color scheme. http://randommization.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Lamborghini-Egoista-Concept.jpg So you could make them silver. Give them orange trims ans black shoulderpads. Looks awesome. Which basecolor do u use? And whicj primer? Using white or grey would give the figure a lighter look. Valeno jas some lighter silver tones. MikhalLeNoir
Say that again TO HIM http://img00.deviantart.net/adc5/i/2009/175/3/b/orange_knight_by_millislim.jpg And now jokes aside: orange is not unknown to knight bouseholds. Heraldry and armor trims or the tabards are often orange. The qhole armor never. Bit that wasn't something I suggested. http://3rd-autistic-cuckoo.co.uk/photos/jousting/j003.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4515700 Share on other sites
Brother Michaels
Hm doesnt look too bad! I remember talking to you about it, im thinking of making a few test marines with different trim colours Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4515803 Share on other sites

Major_Gilbear
Well just be aware that some other reasonably well-known chapters have silver as a main colour: Grey Knights Guardians of the Covenant Silver Skulls Iron Snakes Doom Eagles Astral Claws (now the renegade Red Corsairs) Storm Wardens Although the Storm Wardens are more like 50/50 blue/silver, the others all have silver as a main colour. I'm also sure there are more, but those are the ones that popped into my head at the time! In order to avoid the Iron Warriors look, just be sure to avoid adding black panels, brass/bronze trim, and yellow/orange details/hazard markings. Instead, maybe consider using a bold colour that's different from the other chapters' like green or purple to pick out selected panels of the amour. This could be combined with something like white faceplates for for veterans maybe? You can also use the bold colour to tint the shadows of the silver a little bit, both to tie the colours together, and to help the overall scheme stand out a bit more. Magos Takatus
There's a Forge World paint called Grey Knights Steel that could be a way to make the silver look a bit more distinctive. It is an airbrush paint so it's a bit thin and requires some patience but I've been using some of the bronze and gold for my Skitarii and It wasn't too bad to use with a brush. You could use another silver paint and a thin blue glaze to get a similar effect though. As long as you stay away from brown washes it should stay distinct from the more industrial style of the Iron Warriors. Looks like a few nice ideas for other colours in this thread too. Tyberos the Red Wake
Well just be aware that some other reasonably well-known chapters have silver as a main colour: Astral Claws (now the renegade Red Corsairs) Even worse, Astral Claws are literally silver with blue shoulders/trim like he wanted. I think Astral Knights are also silver with some blue. Brother Michaels
Yea... this is turning into a nightmare! after looking at the Astral Claws its basically what i envisioned in my head one different thing I thought of was having my secondary colour as red? English Knights had red (mainly the cross) but still red Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4517675 Share on other sites
Doctor Perils
Surprisingly enough, there don't seem to be that many silver and red chapters - and those that do exist aren't that well known, apart from the Fire Angels. As long as you choose a good shade of red and the right locations, you can have something nice and unique. Here are the examples I found in the pictorial list of chapters on the 40k wikia: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Emperor's_Swords http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Fire_Angels http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Covenant http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Crusaders http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Snakes Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4518136 Share on other sites
Brother Michaels
I tested 3 marines out they look like the fire angels actually i tried red, blue and green and they all look good! the only problem was i needed an extra layer or 2 on the green Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4518785 Share on other sites
Doctor Perils
Out of curiosity, what sections are you painting in your secondary colour? I'd recommend using the B&C space marine painter to share your ideas :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4518798 Share on other sites

Doctor Perils
Looks good for a start :) I believe you also said that you'd prepared to have some armorial besagews, tilting shields, or whatever they should be called. Some kind of armorial crests could also be an idea for the sergeants and other officers? I often feel that backpacks and legs can look a bit empty without a secondary colour on them somewhere. Could a single kneepad and the backpack center receive some amount of red/green? Also, how about a darker shade of red? Like a burgundy rather then the common bright blood red that is so common in 40k? Brother Michaels
Yea I have over 100 calth shields that I am planning on putting them on the chest of the marines? well most of my marines will be mk 3 , a few mk 2 and 4 here and there so I will see what I can do, will most likely try something with the backpacks and yea ill try and get a darker red, don't think I have one with me so I will have to pop into GW sometime in the week, I might keep with the bright red and shade it to see if it gives it the right effect Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4518831 Share on other sites
Claws and Effect
I had a silver/red/white scheme I was using for a diy chapter many years ago. Looked very similar to your example, but the shoulder pad was white with red trim. I did red on the knee and elbow pads as well, with whit tabards and cloaks. It was pretty sharp looking, but I lost interest in the chapter over time. Feel free to use any of those ideas on one condition: You post pics of the completed models Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326302-legion-colour-looks-too-much-like-iron-warriors/#findComment-4523368 Share on other sites
