Hello everyone, this new paint has been making the rounds in certain circles of late. I would like to share the results of my initial findings with the community.

Black 2.0 was released recently at the Culture Hustle site (http://bit.ly/2ob00R8), and as the site states:

"The world’s mattest, flattest, black art material"

Initial caveats: The site also has promotional photos that show objects being turned into a "Black Hole Silhouette" - that is all smoke and mirrors Photoshop tomfoolerly and web gamut GIFs that have no color range, so don't be swayed by anything on their site. However as someone who works in visual effects I can attest that the even tone this paint provides makes it exceptionally EASY to obtain that drop out black effect in a photo.

OK, so here's the first set of results. It comes in a 150ml bottle, so there's ample paint to play with. Overall I think this paint could have a lot of good applications for a variety of things. First off our contenders:

Under even lighting conditions Black 2.0 is indeed the flattest and mattest of the set, but does not have the deep black tone of the Vallejo Glossy Black. The difference doesn't really translate well via photo, however once we apply them to a more dimensional surface (click photo to enlarge)....

Black 2.0 has no specular highlights. Under direct sunlight there is an almost iridescent look to the pigments. It's very cool looking and hard to descibe, but it almost looked like digital "grain". Most likely this is due to the light scattering properties of the pigment. I did put a few more layers of paint on this test mini so the detail loss and chalky surface texture is due to over-application. However I can attest that after one coat the effect was clearly visible with minimal streaking.

Next up is a 50/50 mix of Black 2.0 and Vallejo Glossy Black. Yin and Yang, as it were.

The 50/50 mix begins to reflect the light slightly more. I might experiment with this mixture a bit more to get a darker tone while keeping the flatness.

This is Vallejo Black Surface Primer and is what I've currently been using the basecoat my army with an airbrush. I used a brush to apply the paint on this test, but an airbrush test will soon follow as new parts arrive tomorrow!

Clearly this bridges well into the semi-gloss department with well defined but slightly diffused highlights. Much darker tone of black than Black 2.0

Then we have Vallejo Glossy Black.

This has the highest value of specular highlights out of the bunch, obviously. However when put into a lineup the difference is striking.

So overall, flattest? Yes, by and far the flattest and mattest finish I've seen. Blackest? That is up to your interpretation of black, but in sheer tonal value the difference is clear as seen above. This paint does make for a great backdrop color. All these photos were taken on a backdrop painted with Black 2.0 - it photographs very even and since it doesn't reflect light in the slightest it gives a nice even tone.

The overall value is a dark ash grey. Things I'm definitely going to use Black 2.0 for:

- Muzzle heat discoloration

- Exhaust stains

- Terrain

Upcoming airbrush tests will see how it looks on vehicles. Also doing a two tone application to some of the test minis to see how that jives. Also tried a couple experiments with crackle medium but it didn't come out so well, I'll post photos if I get better results after I play around with it some more.

Check back next week for the airbrush tests!

Oh I totally agree with you, I'm glad I saved some of you some cash. I went middle of the road on the review, for the price and the amount of paint I got, it was worth it alone as a photo backdrop.

I also have resin replicas of a Halo Rail Gun and Destiny Autorifle that will look really nice with this on some of the surfaces.

I bought some as well, mainly just for pauldron coloration on my Word Bearers. It is indeed a very matte black, but it's not... I don't know how to say it... a brilliant black? I'm not sure that makes sense much. It's definitely not a color I'd do something like Black Templar or Raven Guard in as a base color, but it works great as a spot color or whatnot. It applies well, though.

See, I think it could work for Raven Guard but I'd have to see a tester. I like the idea that, even though it's gray, it's so matte that it sort of drinks up highlights. That's in keeping with the way I can imagine RG armor to look, as opposed to Black Templars or something.

Not that I can see it reaching our hobby stations any time soon, but that reminds me of that weird nanocarbon black paint they developed recently that absorbs 99.9% of all light that hits it. If that ever becomes commercially available in hobby paint form...

That paint is exactly the reason this company made this paint. The original paint's formula was copyrighted by some artist so this black 2.0 is what we have as a replacement.
