About this blog

A time of hidden conflict and secret warfare; when battle-lines were drawn and re-drawn between brother and brother. This is a record of those times, set forth by autolocutor Apologist.

The ancient and crumbling Apocrypha of Davio, a relic of the Second Founding, lists eight successor Chapters to the Thirteenth Legion.

The later Apocrypha of Skaros states there were twenty-three successors to the Ultramarines, but does not list them all...

Herein lies the tale of the brethren of the Praetors of Calth.

Back in the mists of time (well, 2008), on a now-defunct forum called Warseer, I started my first proper blog to track the creation of my Ultramarines.

Fuelled by madness enthusiasm and misplaced confidence, over the next ten years or so I developed the background and models for a force that was themed around the pre-Heresy period (ie. Great Crusade era) and 'truescale' (i.e. the models were based largely on Terminator bits and greenstuff) force. It seemed to capture some people's imaginations – not least then-editor Laurie Goulding of Black Library, who told me that the Ultramarine's Praetorian Armour, first mentioned in Abnett's Know No Fear, was an Easter Egg that took its name from my army(!). I couldn't ask for a more humbling shout-out, and I remain very fond of the army.

Being created before the Age of Darkness ruleset, and relying greatly on the old Horus Heresy artbook, the army was a bit of an artefact of its time, though turned out to be playable with minimal tweaks in the first edition of the game. The original thirty marines swelled to more than a hundred, and as Forge World churned out new models, the army grew to a fairly large size.

My take on Roboute Guilliman.

I largely sat out of 2nd edition Age of Darkness (call it my Imperium Secundus monet) but with the third edition on the horizon, I thought I'd blow the dust off and see if I can't get some games in. It also seemed a great chance to try out the B&C's blog function.

This blog will therefore be a repository for bits and bobs – lost fragments, if you will – so whether you remember young Holion, Cassie and the Hypon Monolith from years ago; or this is your first time seeing them, I hope you enjoy. I pray your indulgence in advance for any shonky old bits, dubious painting or background material that has since become contradictory!

Dusting things off

...quite literally! While most of the army has been in a KR case, a few of these figures have been lurking on top of my workspace (the nearest I get to a display cabinet), and have gathered a lot of dust. I'll have to give them a gentle rinse and a scrub.     Pictured above are, from left to right, a standard Legionary; Captain Aethon, Lieutenant Holion and a Standard Bearer; while below you can see two Tactical squads with all the trimmings (banner, commlink and sergeant),

What's counting as what?

This army has – to my shame – lurked in storage; unforgotten but largely unplayed for the past few years. I thought I'd kick off by trying to work out what everything would count as in the new edition, and what, if any, changes need to be made to get it to a playable state.   The army in its short-lived snow-base phase.   The core of the army – as you can see above – has always been Tactical Marines. The impetus behind the whole project was to create an 'army of heroes':
