Phase 3 - Game 3

Xaphan grinned under his silver skull-helm. This was a foe worth destroying- the fanatical attack dogs of the damned Ecclesiarchy, Sisters of Battle. Their base was filled with statues to the Corpse-God, singing Novitiates praising His name. Xaphan's voice was raised in his infamous castigations, calling his brothers to war.

They were unprepared for the Forgotten's speed and hatred. Again Xaphan lead his warband into the heart of the enemy, destroying both Novitiates and Battl Sisters alike. His bikers and Legionaries flanked him, storming critical positions and planting bombs.

A Mortificator engine smashed into bikers and slew them all, but fell to Sar Ornias' axe. Heavy weapons Havoc squads and Predator battle tanks sent waves of firepower into the enemy, destroying Castigator and Exorcist vehicles, while Retributors fought back and blew apart a Rhino transport. Newly teleported terminators from squad Varcan sliced apart the Sororitas Canoness, but Xaphan took wounds from a halberd-wielding group of Celestians and a Sainted Palatine in response. High Lord Morvenn Vahl herself arrived on the battlefield to bring back hope to the Sisters; her actions removed Ornias and two Forgotten squads but was unfortunately too late to save the battle.

The Fallen burned and blasted the sacred monuments to the Emperor, completing a vital mission for the Warmaster. Rewards were heaped upon them, but the stoic Forgotten did not fight for pretty trinkets- they fought to bring down the Imperium itself.

Round 1

Forgotten turn 1 - With the ability to take first turn due to winning that roll for Attacker, I was set. Both bike squads moved up to contest the flanking objectives (the upper bikes planting a bomb), while Xaphan moved up to take out the infiltrating Novitiates. Lascannon Havocs managed to take out the Exorcist sitting in the rear, while the Predator/missile Havocs killed the Rhino on the upper objective, spilling out its flamer Dominions. A massive 1st turn that managed to remove 2 of the objectives after Xaphan consolidated into the second middle objective (flanking objectives either held by Dominions or a Mortificator after a lackluster combat from bikes).

Sisters turn 1 - Sisters strike back, with their Castigator tank killing the Predator and Mortificator killing off the lower bikes. Xaphan loses a couple of Chosen to shooting attacks, but overall the Forgotten are in a really good position.

Round 2

Forgotten turn 2 - Rhino Legionaries deploy on both flanks, with the upper planting a bomb. On the lower flank Sar Ornias and his Chosen charge and kill off the Mortificator, removing that objective, while Xaphan and his Chosen kill off the battle sister squad on the last middle objective. The upper objective is still a whirling fight of bikers and Dominions (ie- they can't kill each other for some reason). Lascannon Havocs again kill a Sisters tank, this time the Castigator that was hiding in the lower right corner.

Sisters turn 2 - Sisters drop an Immolater with Celestian Sacristians near the giant terrain piece in the back and proceed to kill off all of Xaphan's Chosen and his little disciples, leaving him in the center of the battlefield with no support. Retributors with multi-meltas and heavy bolters appear in the top of the map and do damage to the Legionaries squad and the missile Havocs in the center of the board.

Round 3

Forgotten turn 3 - Terminators, Havocs, and a second Predator all deploy for the Forgotten. The firepower manages to finally kill off the Dominions, while also allowing the Terminators to reap through the Retributors in melee. On the bottom board edge, Sar Ornias plants a bomb. Xaphan charges the Sacristians and kills off three before losing his last two wounds.

Sisters turn 3 - Retributors with heavy flamers and Morvenn Vahl + Paragons show up on the bottom edge. They destroy Ornias' Chosen but the Master of Executions lives until the next round. The Legionaries who have deployed from the Rhino take a faceful of heavy flamer and three go down.

Round 4

Forgotten turn 4 - With enough squads in the various scoring zones, the Forgotten pull out the win and the rest of the battle is talked out.

Sisters turn 4 - Sisters kill off Sar Ornias and get the most out of their Cut off the Head Agenda, killing off all Forgotten characters in the battle.

Thoughts

Again, I got super lucky in getting Attacker this mission, due to how the rules work and how fast my army is. The Defender only gets VP from 3 things - Having 3 objectives, no enemies in Gamma Zone (last sixth of the board), and killing an Attacker unit during their turn. Attacker gets a VP for each objective they have (which then gets removed at the end of their turn), and having a unit in one of three Zones (1 VP for each zone). So the odds are stacked against the Defender if the Attacker can do what I was able to and take out two-three objectives in the first round. After the end of the second round I had enough points that if I had brought in my Deepstrike wave (2 termie squads, 1 raptor squad), I would have been able to end it there by having squads in all three of the target Zones, but I chose to bring in a heavier wave to get them experience and give the Sisters player a chance to get more XP/SAP from his Agendas. It was a good game with a fun opponent, whom I had a good discussion with afterwards about some tactics and options that came up during the battle. Next week is the final one for this campaign, so I'm both looking forward to it and slightly nervous as I expect to face either of the two armies I really struggled with- Orks or Vanguard SM. Still, I'm doing good with a 7-4 record and overall the Chaos forces have done significant work for all of our small number (only 2 Chaos versus 3 of the other two factions).
