Game Overview

Round 1  - Note the middle "objective" isn't actually an objective, just a reminder of what I needed to do for Central Position

Necrons turn 1 - Push up aggressively to support the Infiltrating Lychguard unit. Triarch Stalker Ma'ar the Mourned pours fire into the Striking Scorpions on the top objective, killing off a few. Heavy Destroyers damage but don't kill the Wave Serpent.

Aeldari turn 1 - Super aggressive push from Aeldari, as they wanted to get the First into the Fray Agenda (1st round get into Engagement). Upper Striking Scorpions attack and then get killed by Stalker Ma'ar, Howling Banshees and their Autarch kill off all the Skorpekh but leave Lord X'ull alive who then wipes out the Banshees, and the Wave Serpent and Stalker Iltep slap-fight each other with no real effect.

Round 2

Necrons turn 2 - Ma'ar kills off the Shining spears in melee, Lychguard move up and kill the Autarch.

Aeldari turn 2 - Farseer/Warlock/Storm Guardian squad move to the top objective with the second Striking Scorpions squad. Shooting/melee from the Wave Serpent brings Stalker Iltep down to two wounds.

Round 3

Necrons turn 3 - Big Deepstrike/Reserve turn for both sides. Necrons drop 2 Triarch Praetorians squads and Plasmancer Am-Heh deep into the enemy deployment zone where they stay for the rest of the battle, doing nothing but netting the Relentless Expansion agenda. Slight movement by Lychguard to take away the left objective from the Storm Guardian sticky. The Wave Serpent finally kills of Stalker Iltep.

Aeldari turn 3 - Swooping Hawks slam down near the left objective while Warp Spiders teleport near the Deathmark-held right objective. Ma'ar shoots down the Wave Serpent through a Leathal Hit Overwatch, then the Storm guardian squad, Fire Dragons, and Striking scorpions all attack Ma'ar in melee, doing severe damage but failing to kill him. On the return stroke, Ma'ar kills the Striking Scorpions. while the Warp Spiders kill the Deathmarks.

Round 4/5

Necrons turn 4 - A combination of attacks from Ma'ar, X'ull, and a couple of Lychguard kill off the Fire Dragons and Storm Guardians/Farseer/Warlock.

Aeldari turn 4 - Swooping Hawks kill off a Heavy Destroyer, the final death on the field.

At the top of round 5 the slate was pretty clear and the rest of the game was talked out. Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders split out to accomplish an Aeldari Agenda that required units to be near battlefield corners.

Thoughts

I think this battle was quite swingy- while the state of the board was pretty much in my favor the entire game, the actual VP scoring was very close. Twice the Aeldari passed a Battle-Shock test on an objective, gaining 5 VP each time, while I failed to do so twice, which had the potential to change the game. The Warp Spiders moving off the right objective to accomplish their agenda also changed the game from a tie to a win for me. With both of us in the same alliance, it didn't make sense for no one to gain the victory bonus, and the Warp Spiders would gain XP instead of scoring VP for a meaningless draw.

I do believe that the Aeldari trying to be extremely aggressive played into my hands more than theirs- the Howling Banshee squad had the potential to kill off both the Skopekh squad and X'ull because the Autarch had an upgraded damage/Precision melee weapon, but she failed to actually do more than one wound to X'ull, who then saved it. With that, the game pretty much changed as the biggest melee unit the Aeldari had was off the board and I was able to clear up the center and move around as I wanted. A good game for me that was a lot closer in VP than I thought.

Next week I'm going up against my gaming buddy who is running GSC. We'll be upping to 1.5k (allowing me to swap out my Plasmancer for a Transcendent C'tan), and using an Armageddon mission, which should be entertaining. Thanks for looking!
