Game Overview
Agendas - To the Last (Setokh, X'ull, Nuun'kasi), Central Position
Mission - Similar to the tournament mission the Ritual, in this mission players roll-off in the beginning of the battle round to place an objective in No Man's Land 1" away from one of their units and at least 9" away from every other objective. 10VP at the end of your command phase for any of the following - control 1 or more objectives, have control of the objective placed that round, have control of the center objective.
Tyranid list had a lot of units - it was a Vanguard detachment with a Winged Tyrant, Deathleaper, 2 Lictors, 2 Broodlords w/full Genestealer squads, Trygone, Biovore, Tyrannofex, Von Ryan's leapers, and a Neurothrope/Zoanothrope squad.
Round 1
Tyranids turn 1 - Tyranids use their Advantage to gain the first placement of new objectives, placed it in the yellow ruins in the upper left. Not much from the Tyranids, the player was playing very conservative with his genestealers in response to my rushing forward with my Infiltrating Lychguard and bunch of Scout-moving units. Lychguard weather shots from Zoanothropes and the Tyrannofex.
Necrons turn 1 - Moved up with Skorpekh on the upper objective with the Transcendent C'tan accompanying. C'tan kills the Lictor up top, while Stalkers put shots into genestealers and do nothing much. Dumbly I shoot and charge my Tomb Blades into a Lictor, while enemy Von Ryan's Leapers heroic into them. Tomb blades do nothing while taking enough wounds for two of them to die.
Round 2
Tyranids turn 2 - Nids win the placement and put the objective in the black ruins near the center up top, then move up, genestealers moving fast enough for both squads to charge into the Lychguard. Shooting from the Tyrannofex kills off the bottom Stalker. Due to losses, only one Genestealer squad is actually able to fight the Lychguard, killing off a lot and leaving only the Overlord and a single bodyguard. ResOrb heals up 5 wounds, bringing back three Lychguard at the end of the fight phase. Flying Tyrant deploys behing the Deathmarks, but out of their auto-shooting ability of 18" (Nids player was nervous for some reason even when I told him the stats of the weapons...), not really doing anything this turn.
Necrons turn 2 - C'tan teleports to confront the Flyrant, shooting him but doing not much. Deathmarks snipe the Broodlord that isn't in combat. Praetorians Deepstrike near the Lychguard and charge the genestealers, killing off most while the Lychguard defend and regain more wounds. Ma'ar the Mourned charges and kills off Deathleaper who is near the upper objective.
(Forgot pic...)
Round 3
Tyranids turn 3 - Necrons win the roll, placing the objective near the center of the board by the Lychguard/Praetorians. Shooting from Nids kills off Ma'ar and a Heavy Destoryer, while the Trygon shows up near the upper objective. The Flyrant uppy-downies with the Leapers to again have more board presence but doesn't really do much. Second genestealer squad charges into the Lychguard, but without Broodlord help don't do nearly as much damage as the first did, and the first squad dies off from retaliatory attacks. Great use of Shadow from the Warp to negate any scoring from the middle for the Necrons (both the Lychguard and Praetorians fail), turning a possible 30VP round into only a 10VP round - this was what made the game so close.
Necrons turn 3 - Second Praetorian squad takes over the upper objective, but won't last because there is a giant angry Trygon there (they are totally distraction). More melee in the center, with the Lychguard/Praetorians whittling down the second genestealer squad.
Round 4
Tyranids turn 4 - Nids win the roll, place the objective in the bottom right near a Lictor. Trygon/Tyrannofex shooting kills off the upper Praetorians and Trygon moves to charge the center Praetorians, killing them all but not able to tie up Lychguard. Flyrant moves near to the upper left objective where the Skorpekh have sat all game, fails a charge to attack them.
Necrons turn 4 - Nuun'kasi moves and is able to charge the genestealers, finishing them off. Skorpekh move to the center left objective to attempt to charge the Trygon but fail.
Round 5
Tyranids turn 5 - Necrons win roll-off, place the objective near the Skorpekh in the upper left section of the map (where basically all of the objectives went). Tyranids attempt to kill off the Skorpekh by charging in the Flyrant, Trygon, and Leapers while shooting with everything at the Lychguard (who survive). Skorpekh go down to just the Lord with a single wound, who by the end of combat is only engaged with the Leapers (who are down to a single model).
Necrons turn 5 - Skorpekh Lord heals 3 wounds (thus bringing him over half for full To the Last points) and he kills the last Leaper. Game ends.
Thoughts
This was an extremely close game. If the Nids had been able to actually kill off the Lychguard in the center, the game would have been over- the dual genestealer charge almost made it, but because I was able to remove Lychguard models that were engaged/close to the second squad, I was able to make it so that they were unable to pile in enough to actually get into combat and thus saved the Lychguard. That Lychguard squad has been my rock in this crusade- the Overlord and them with the upgrades that give Infiltrate, Stealth on an objective, reanimating 3 Wounds instead of d3 for Reanimate, and a 6+ FNP plus the Starshatter strat Endless Servitude giving another Reanimate at the end of my Fight phase has turned them into a pretty much unkillable unit that holds a No Man's Land objective on turn 1 and just doesn't move all game. They don't kill a lot, but they score massive amounts of points just sitting where they are. Other than them, the game was pretty decent- this Nids list was fast and tricky, relying on movement more than killing power and was also the only other undefeated list in the campaign at this point. Quite a fun game, as it came down to just a couple of rolls/decisions and it was very close up until the final dice roll.
Up next, 1750 points (so adding in another Heavy Destroyer, and the Plasmance/10-man Immortal tesla squad) versus Sisters of Battle. Should be a good one!
