Project Origins

Initially, my first lead into the Warhammer universe was a friend buying Space Marine 2 for my birthday on Steam. While I enjoyed the game, I had no real concept of anything going on and it was mostly just a time passing game for me.  However, over a few months, through continuous play, I got a little more curious. At the suggestion of the same friend, I decided to pick up a 40k book. I started with the Siege of Vraks, and then Fall of Cadia. But I got a little more curious as to where the whole thing started.

So I picked up Horus Rising. That was about September/October of 2025. After making it through Horus Rising, I immediately knew I wanted to play this game. As much as I like 40k, Horus Heresy seemed to resonate more with me for obvious reasons. I loved the legion versus legion combat.

From the start, I knew I wanted to make a large collection of a single legion. After several months of reading and research, I started narrowing down the legions I was interested in doing a project on. My first thoughts were the Sons of Horus, but I eventually decided against it because I thought it might be a little too on the nose. Space Wolves were another prospect, but I find Leman Russ to be insufferable. And eventually I settled on the Iron Warriors after reading Tallarn. It was a good look for me at Iron Warriors and also Solar Auxilia.

I had the idea of creating my own canon adjacent, lore plausible unit. And here we are.

As this project progresses, I'll add updates.

I would have photos to immediately add, but as I primed my first batch of Mark III Tacticals, I fell victim to the classic blunder of holding my priming can too far away, and the paint was drying before it was hitting the model. So they're in the process of being stripped right now so I can try again.

The Battle of Tallarn is one of my favorite stories. So Tragic and massed armor.  If you can find the Storm of Iron book and Also on Warhammer Plus there is the Iron Within short, for some Post Heresy Iron Warriors action. I fight Iron Warriors on a regular basis, as my friends has them for 30k and 40k.

You know, at first, I didn't really care for Tallarn. I got about a third of the way through, and ended up restarting it and had a big appreciation for it afterwards. It became one of my favorite reads. It really made me appreciate the IVth, and how they fight, and sort of steered me towards this project fully.

I see Storm of Iron is on Audible so I'll definitely check that one out. And I love the Iron Within short. Funny enough one of the first things I bought when I got into 40k was a Warhammer+ subscription. And I didn't know any of the legions by number or emblems. So when the Iron Warriors came down and started killing the Guard, I thought "Man. Astartes are a pretty hard on the Guard." It became my second favorite of the animations on there, only beaten by Kill Lupercal, which I think is a masterpiece.
