Mutants WIP

Recommended Posts

I've been going on bragging about how I've put my bits box together and built 30 Mutants and an Aspiring Champion. At least I thought I had, but only once, here... <_<

Still, this is what I managed to put together:

Squad 1

Group one, with a Boss and a flamer:

Group two, with another flamer, and an icon:

Group three, with a really cool zombie in the middle:

Squad 2

Group one, with a Boss, an icon and a heavy stubber:

Group two, with another heavy stubber:

Group three:

That's about it, I had a great time converting them! The Champion leading them is under construction, and is a mix of Chaos Space Marine, Khorne Berzerker, Chaos Warrior, Chaos Terminator and Crom the Conqueror bits!

Comments and critisizm is, as always, welcome!

Cheers; Moribund!

Having just recently played a buddy's chaos army with a couple of real big mutant squads, I've grown to really like them. I found his conversions amusing to say the least.

As far as yours, I think they're great. You have great variety of bits to make them with and no two look real similar which is a great touch. I do find the mutant carring a "Rack of Ribs" just plain amusing though. Love that stuff. So, is the burst cannon supposed to be a heavy stubber? I like the clip underneath it.

Anyways, they look great. Can't wait to see them painted.

Wow..... thats a lotta bitz, they look great in a twisted, mutant sort of way. im surprised that half of them fit together. Some of them are comical like the one holding up the ribs and the pirate flamer. Their champion leader sounds cool too, cant wait to see him and his band o' muties painted

I love these guys, you will gross your opponent out with these running across the board at them.

Now... Let's see 'em painted! :)

They look awesome. THeres a nice mix of models there.

2 criticisms and they both involve the heavy stubbers.

The first one looks far too imperial and too techy to be a heavy stubber.

The second one looks too heavy and balanced too far forward.

Don't know what you could do about this but i'm a freak. I've had plans to do a pure zombie LOTD army for a very long time. I've even got 3 zombie boxes, a cadian box and a catachan box under my desk waiting for me to find the time.

@Brother Gluttious: Hehe, thanks! I just added the rack of ribs to fill out that empty hand, and a knife was too boring, I guess...

The heavy stubber is a burst cannon barrel attached to a Terminator storm bolter, and I think it worked very well! :P

@Imperator=][=Romanus: Yeah, when I built them, I tried not to make them too much like GWs Mutants, that from time to time looks too random for my tastes. I tried to add a little bit of realism to them (realism for a future mutant... :P ). Still, most of them look atleast possible! ;)

@Veht: Cheers, and painted they shall be! I've just undercoated squad 1. ;)

@Obliterator: Yeah, thanks, he's kind of my favourite too! :D

@Arbites_Augmentented: Yep, all greenstuff! I added an armature of brass wire bent in the general shape of the fire, and then added a layer of greenstuff, just 3-4mm thick. Then I attacked it with my clippes, and just gave it a few pinches to make out the basic shape. The GW sculpting tool (cocktail sticks, pins, a craft knife also works) was pressed in from the top and down to sculpt the "flames", and when the entire surface was covered, I dragged a few lines bottom-to-top to get it more coherent. That's it!

I tink there was a tutorial on the GW page before, but I couldn't find it...

@ Freebooter: The first heavy stubber can be fixed just by painting it in a worn, oxidated brass colour (which will be the default metal colour for these ...uhm.... things?), and for the second one... I'll figure something out! :P Your comment about that one is so true, I thought about adding ahandle for the other arm, that might balance it out a bit, or maybe shortening something...

and @LordXaras: Thanks mate!

Thanks for all the comments, sister and brothers, I will paint these up as fast soon as I can!

Cheers; Moribund!

UPDATE!

I've completed the Aspiring Champion who'll lead the 400 points army! Except the paintjob, and basing, he's pretty much done!

Pics!

Shoulder pad and gun:

I've painted the metals on all of Mutant squad 1, and basecoated the skin on half of them.

This guy I've just undercoated. I'll probably be painting him tonight at my painting group (very first meeting tonight, and we actualy have a lot of talented painters here, including Martin Sahlin, who won the Golden Daemon for his Sanguinius, seen here)! I think it'll be alot of fun! :(

Ok, now you can start the CnC! Cheers; Moribund!

Your mutants are excellent, the pirate zombie and the stilt legged guy made me chuckle. :)

The GS and conversion work on your AC is worthy of a Chaos Lord. :(

I have a suggestion for painting the spikes, as wood soaks water like the devil, wouldn't it be best to apply paint on varnish first before doing the basecoat?

That is an awesome force.. :P

Thanks for the comments, Nihm and Azazel! (and Joker, you posted while I typed... :) )

I painted the spikes with thin PVA glue before I undercoated them, I think that will make them easier to paint later. I think they would look really great in a Scaly Green kind of colour, like the terrain in the Hordes of Chaos army book! :(

I think the spikes could represent Daemonic Mutation, as the Champion calls them up from the ground himself when the enemy comes too close! :P

The shoulder pad are from the old Chaos Warriors from fantasy (sprue sprue, and you beat me there aswell!). There are a couple of different pads there, and they look really nice combined with more archaic armour, like the metal Chaos Terminators and new Chaos Warriors (see, I live as I learn! :P ).

i like it a lot. I love your Champion, he just oozes badass-ness. Not keen on the mutans myself but they gave me a chuckle and its very characterful, so bonus points for you.

Someone mentioned the painting of the spikes on the base. you could try and coat them in pva glue before painting them, that would build the barrier and stop the sticks soalking up the paint/water so much.

Just out of curiosity; what made up the back bit of the base??

Cheers, I already mentioned PVA glue, but you still get a cookie! :P

Ah, the back bit! It's some kind of filler just gooed on there, dried and filed. It's black because I black inked it.

I've actually done better work with that stuff before, but this is another brand. I've got to stock up on the good stuff instead!

Cheers; Moribund!

Lovely stuff. First time i've ever seen pics of a LaTD army outside of the Codex and they sure look like fun (Must resist...temptation.. ;) ). Have to echo the calls about the Champion. That base is outstanding ;)

Yeah, I noticed they're kind of rare! Still, when I found I had so much leftover bits, there was no choice but to do this!

I came back from the painting group a couple of hors ago, it was really fun, but I suddenly feel inferior compared to all the other great painters there... ;) Well, I'm there to learn, am I not? ;)

I think I will stop at 400 points for now, maybe take it up to 500 by adding a few more models... I've got another project in mind: a Necromunda gang or three (and three Imperial Space Marines, very customized, out to recruit).

I think it would be nice to be able to convert and paint up a few cool gangs to my best standard so I can let people borrow them and learn to play! ;)

Also, the 400 points list goes as such:

Aspiring Champion of Chaos

Armed with a power weapon and a bolt pistol, equipped with frag grenades and spiky bits, and

gifted with daemonic mutation and daemonic strength.

Mutant squad

Mutant Boss armed with a power fist and a close combat weapon.

12 Mutants armed with close combat weapons.

2 Mutants armed with flamer equivalents.

Mutant squad

Mutant Boss armed with a power fist and a close combat weapon..

14 Mutants armed with close combat weapons.

2 Mutants armed with heavy stubbers.

Nurglesque daemon pack

5 Plaguebearers.

The Plaguebearers will probably kill off a couple of my own mutants due to the Rot, but they are way too cool to be left out!

Cheers; Moribund!
