Depends. If you have a big allarus unit, then it might be worth having spear wardens so that you can use each stratagem (ap for allarus, +wound for wardens). Have 10 x Wardens, started painting them this week, 6 x Allurus and 3 x Aquilon. So, kinda have to pick a poison here. Was going to use axes on the wardens.....may have to think about this.

Finished this book yesterday. First off, need to say I'm a huge Chris Wraight fan, the Emperor's Legion, Carrion Throne and Hollow Mount are all 10/10 for me. Also, I am a huge fan of Valdor and started a Custodes Army due to reading about him. I plan on reading the book again this weekend, but I was not blown away. As the previous poster said, Valdor wasn't the focus of the book, which was a let down for me. There are several story lines, such as Fat High Lord who's actions I didn't fully understand, and some others which were very good. The world created in the novel are first rate, and background on Terra during the rise of the Empire are very vivid and descriptive. Maybe on a re-read I will appreciate the novel more. I'm not saying it's a bad novel at all, but I think my expectations for more background and depth into Valdor were not met, but that is my fault for having expectations for the book in terms of character development of him.

Funnily enough the most recent WD has a teaser for a BL book coming soon that focuses on the Custodes (and Sisters of Silence) being roused to war in numbers for the first time since the Heresy. Maybe it'll name drop a few 30k units to set a precedent! I'm sure a week after I complete the army new rules with tons of other options will drop !!!

Hahaha, a few more months before the whole army is complete. Work just takes too much of my time, sadly. My larger concern is if / when they allow 30k models with Custodes......it will be more months of painting adding Jet Bikes, Grav Tanks, and the new Custodes Flyer !!!

Finished the 1st squad of Custodes Guardians......bought the Talons of the Emperor box, so a Land Raider is next I think......

Appreciate the comments ! I will have 1 x squad with Guardian Spears, but in the end it came down to what I thought would improve the unit the most even though I agree, the Spears are very iconic and personally prefer how they look to the swords and boards. Both the Sword and Spear are AP -3, Damage D3. The strength +1 for the Spear isn't a huge deal, basically Strength 5 v 6. The Spear does give better shooting, but in CC you get the 2 shots from the sword. I don't plan on using Guardian Squads for much shooting, but want to get them in combat asap. My thinking is the +3 Inv Save from the Shield increases unit survival from ranged attacks and in cc and hopefully outweights the damage output I could inflict during the shooting phase with the Spears. Haven't tried them in a game yet, but this is my thesis....until I hear differently or someone pushes a better argument.

With all this talk of the awesomeness of Assassins coupled with the lack of psychic units in a Custodes Army, I've added a Culexus to my list. Here he is !

Great discussion ! I'm building a pure Custodes army and the psychic phase has me worried. I've been debating sisters of silence or a Culexus assassin to lessen the impact should I face a strong psyker army..... but after reading, I'm adding a Culexus. Another model on the table for others to worry about.

Thanks for the comments ! Below are the next models in the chute to paint. Vexilla, another Guardian and the Shield Captain. After that, another Shield Captain, Guardian with Sword and Board, then 3 with Guardian Blades. Finally, the Ixion Hale model, but going to call him Constantine Valdor (dependent on someday getting HQ rules for these guys). ...and have decided to add a Culexus Assassin.

Well, after a +10 years hiatus from 40k, the Adeptus Custodes brought me back. Painting skills are still rusty, but I love the lore and models of these guys. Here is my first Venerable Custodes Contemptor. Added a Khers Assault Cannon and Combi-Bolter in place of the shield. Lets hope there are complete Custodes rules for 40k soon, or I may not get to play much !

***Update*** Moved pictures here based on Praefect Scoiorum's recommendation. Finished up the first Contemptor Dread for my army. A bit of a beast to paint, but fun. Added a kheres assault cannon in place of the shield. Adding more firepower to the army, so perhaps 3-4 more of these guys, perhaps a multi-melta Dread too. Have 13 more Guardians to paint as well, when work allows. Hope everyone enjoys !
