I started 40K back in the Rogue Trader days with my Howling Griffon marines and Eldar. Since then I've played some of every edition and added way too many armies. High priorities in 2020 include Grey Knights, Blood Angels, and World Eaters Played a lot of Epic in the 90's too.

  1. Why wouldn't a lascannon be suitable anti-tank? Whether it's on a dreadnought or anything else?
  2. With Grey Knights it can get complicated as you have the usual Marine mix of warlord traits, litanies, psychic powers, and strats but then you also have the individual unit powers and now the brotherhoods ... so finding those cascade effects of "this brotherhood + this warlord trait on Draigo standing next to a strike squad in the tide of x " etc etc. has been a big discussion since the codex released a week or two back. There are similar conversations to be had for the BAs but since the book has been out for a while I think a lot of that has been settled for now or at least talked through to the point there are some standard things people will do such as what Karhedron mentions above.
  3. Skarboyz vanished between 4th-7th ed. I think they decided 'veterans but not nobz' wasn't necessary. 'Ard boyz seem to be gone as well and were around a lot more consistantly. Skarboyz were in 8th as a Strat Snagga boys perform as skarboyz now imo Exactly. I always used them as Ghaz's elite escort. I used nobs so they were slightly bigger than normal boys and simply armed them like boyz. Ill have to look at the beast snagga stuff and see if the rules fit the fluff better, not a huge fan of the feral look, I prefer my guys to be militaristic orks. Can't you just take the models you were using as skarboyz before and run them as beast snagga boyz? You don;t need the actual new models - they're just ork boyz with a different look.
  4. I am curious to see how GW handles the next generation of crusader squads. Lore-wise it would make sense to have scouts, first-born, and primaris marines all able to join one squad, especially if you think in terms of an ongoing crusade. Rules-wise we know they have not done this previously. Deathwatch and Space Wolves can both mix different armor types in a squad but the firstborn/primaris divide remains even there. Fingers crossed for something satisfying on both levels.
  5. Deff dreads are usually good to run alongside the boyz. Tankbustas are a solid, useful addition. People have been using kommandos and stormboyz in small units to pop in and score points for secondaries. Bunches of mek guns have been a successful meta list but it's usually a lot of mek guns. That said with a new codex out in the immediate future it's probably smart to wait and see how it all turns out if you're just starting out.
  6. In general you want your Kabalites in 5-man squads with a blaster in a transport, not so much on foot. There does seem to be some early talk that Raiders are better than venoms, mainly because they can carry the new-hotness dark lance so your transport also adds anti-tank firepower to your army. Obsidian Rose helps here as the +6" range with splinter racks helps power up your embarked splinter rifles and the re-roll 1 wound per unit makes raider-mounted lances better and makes your one-per-squad blaster better too. Just some thoughts from someone else re-sorting their dark kin army too.
  7. I've been dusting off my orks lately and I have an old Gobsmasha I've been using as a Gunwagon with DaBooma and had some fun with it. It's a bit of a conflicted unit as it has that transport capacity of 12 so it kinda wants to be used to haul something but with the double shots for moving slow it kinda wants to NOT charge across the board like a Trukk, plus it's not open topped so you can't use it as a bunker for Lootas or Flash Gitz. It's tricky. I'm using it in a crusade campaign so I took it with the big gun and two big shootas and then put my warboss, painboy, and 5 mega nobz in it to let it move slowly up the board behind a wall of boyz and under the protection of a KFF. It lived until Turn 4 - most of the army did not - so there is that, and it dished out some hurt. I think the weapon choices are fairly straightforward, the tough question is what else do you want it to do?
  8. How are you thinking of running your black tide? 10-man squads or 5-man?
  9. If you're looking for Primaris chainswords you could pick up an individual assault intercessor on eBay, or a squad if you need multiples. Others have mentioned the Vanguard Vets box and it's great, as is Death Company for BA's when it comes to providing a multitude of assault weapons. The one that surprised me was the Devastator Squad box - I picked one up earlier this year and it has an amazing variety of sergeant options, more than the current Tac Squad box I believe - including a single lightning claw.
  10. "My opponent took the mission-specific secondary (also called Centre Ground), Engage On All Fronts and Linebreaker as his secondaries." I don't know if it makes it better or worse but you can't take both Linebreaker and Engage on all fronts - they're from the same category. Even on a small table, terrain makes a huge difference - might try adjusting that if you play a rematch. Your army is made up of tough, elite, short-ranged and assault units so it's pretty much built for this kind of engagement on a small table where the two center objectives are only 16" apart. He brought a Wyvern (S4 AP0) and a Battle Cannon/3xHB Russ which are not really made for short-range engagements nor is the Wyvern great against Primaris Maines. Even without list-tailoring given the size of the battlefield and the makeup of your list he's fighting a bit uphill. It might play out somewhat differently just by going to 1500 and moving up to the strike force missions and table size.
