how to 'Templar Encamine'

Recommended Posts

Instead of brown, try for a Dark Flesh base. It'll give a more ruddy tone on which to build. As for black or white primer, I've found that it's really your decision, as red can be painted well on either.

I work on a Scab Red (Or Red Gore, whichever is darker. I can't remember) and mix upwards, from a black base coat. You'll want to keep your paints thin, and work to layer it on. Make sure the previous layer is dry before you move on, otherwise you can get 'paint divots' that are a pain to fix. Work on up to a Scab Red/Red Gore, and then begin to add in Blood Red till you've got a solid colour. Give it a highlight with some Blazing Orange on the major point, and then a few glazes of Red Ink or thinned Blood Red.

Let us know how it turns out.

It might not be identical, but it fits your description:

From a black undercoat, I cover it entirely with scab red, roughly highlight with blazing orange - then cover it with Vallejo model color 934 - Transparent Red. You can repeat the last 2 steps several times, adding depth and richness to the colour. Naturally you can be much more careful with the orange highlights than I've been here, if you want a less textured final look.

Hi

I'm Andrew Long and the templars on the Games Workshop Oz Medusa V site is my work.

I wanted a challenging Space Marine army that wasn't black but also wasn't a Blood Angels clone. I experimented with a number of colour combinations but finally created a deep sanguine colour that embodied the name of my Space Marine Army.

To achieve the colour scheme of the Templars Encarmine I used the following steps to achieve the colours.

Stage 1

Base Colour Red Gore/Dark Flesh proportions 50/50

Stage 2

Add Red Gore to Base Colour mix 50/50

Stage 3

Add Blood Red with Stage 2 mix 50/50

Stage 4

Add blazing orange with stage 3 mix/50/50

Stage 5

Add vomit brown to stage 4 mix 50/50

Stage 6

Add bleached bone to stage 5 mix 50/50

Stage 7

Magenta ink/Chestnut Ink 60/40 then dilute with water 50/50

(add some Ard coat when doingvehicles or large flat areas to ensure high tide marks arn't left from the diluted ink)

Stage 8

Rehighlight to pick out the hardest sharpest edges

To get the best results each stage is a starting point for blending and mixing

BTW

These steps are done over Chaos Black primer - White has too hard a tooth (texture) and with the amount of handling and number of stages needed to paint a space marine you run the risk of wearing/rubbing off the paint before you've finished painting the model. Black is the superior product for consistency and coverage.

Thanks Q

I've just uploaded some shots I found on the PC that were taken during construction and Painting - there in the members gallery.(sorry I don't know how to direct a link to them).

I hope these and the finished versions Pics the Oz White Dwarf team took of them on the Medusa Pages help in giving a clearer idea of how the army evolved. Unfortunately it's really hard to capture the depth of colour that the number of blended layers and glasing creates in the figures when you see them in the flesh, but I hope these pics can help.

Andrew
