While the Bolter & Chainsword is primarily organized around the Warhammer 40,000 game, there are many other games set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. These games range from tabletop miniature wargames to roleplaying games, boardgames, (colletible) card games, and electronic games. Most discussions about these games will occur here in this forum and its sub-forums, but other related topics are bound to spring up elsewhere, especially in the Forge forums. In addition, plenty of external websites will include content that is useful for fans of these games, including blog posts, videos, etc. Since we can't pin every useful topic, this topic is intended to provide a handy resource for players of the full range of games set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

For our purposes, games are broken down into the following categories:

Board Games
These games generally use counters, pieces, or miniatures placed or moved upon a board. Unlike the Tabletop Miniature Wargames below, these games are much more limited in what players are allowed to use. Examples of these games include Space Hulk, Deathwatch: Overkill, and Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress.

Card Games
These games use playing cards as the primary device for the game (instead of as a tool to augment another type of game). An example of these games is the Warhammer 40,000 Collectible Card Game.

Roleplaying Games
In roleplaying games, players assume the roles of characters in the Warhammer 40,000 setting. Under the guidance of a referee, the players cooperate and collaborate to act out the roles, personalities, and abilities of their chosen characters within the narrative framework presented by the referee. For our purposes, only tabletop roleplaying games will be covered in this category - electronic roleplaying games will be covered in the Electronic Games category. Examples of roleplaying games include the Only War game from Fantasy Flight Games and the Wrath & Glory game from Cubicle 7 Games.

Tabletop Miniature Wargames
These games are, like the Warhammer 40,000 game, played using miniature models to represent conflicts between opposing forces. Games are generally played out on tabletops with representations of terrain. Players generally have freedom in selecting their forces, though some games may be historical re-enactments using forces specified by the scenario. Examples of tabletop miniature wargames are Aeronautica Imperialis and Battlefleet Gothic.

Video Games
This category covers a wide range of games played using console devices, computers, and mobile devices such as cellular telephones. Video games include games such as Chaos Gate and Dawn of War. Video games also include digital adaptations of physical games, such as Battlefleet Gothic Armada and Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels.

There is no need to point out that firepower and speed are far more important than the safety of the racers when it comes to the design of such contraptions. Now you too can recreate these frantic races, pitting these crazy speed freaks against each other. Play your cards cunningly and try to manage your attacks and movements intelligently, before your rivals have a chance to get ahead. Come on, you must finish them! Relic is a board game in which two to four players each assume the role of a powerful hero from the Warhammer 40,000 universe and bravely venture forth to shield the Antian Sector from certain doom. By completing missions and defeating enemies, characters compete to gain rewards and experience, furthering their chance of being the first to defeat whatever evil lies beyond the Warp rift. Building on the foundations of the Talisman system, Relic is an adventure game in which seemingly straightforward choices mask scores of possibilities. For those who haven't played the classic fantasy adventure game Talisman, this means that on each turn, a player rolls a single six-sided die before moving his playing piece that number of spaces clockwise or counter-clockwise around the region (outer, middle, or inner) of the board it currently occupies. That player then draws a card or cards to see what he's encountered, pitting his heroic persona against foul enemies, dangerous locations, and fantastic strangers. And all the while, these intrepid heroes rise in power, as they work their way toward the ultimate goal at the center of the board.

It uses a variety of collectable spaceship miniatures; unlike Battlefleet Gothic, movement is more Blue Max style than miniatures style, each player simultaneously programming from any of 13 possible moves. Before the game starts, the players also allocate their shields around the ship's periphery. Combat is a simple affair, and the rules are very skimpy.

CHAOS GATE
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate is a turn-based, squad level tactical game set in the Warhammer 40000 universe. As Captain Kruger of the Ultramarines space marines chapter, your duty is to hunt down the Chaos traitor forces of Lord Zymran, and find out the reason behind their incursion in Imperial Space. Battles are turn-based (each character having a number of action points to expend each turn to move, fire or take other actions), displayed in isometric perspective. The game is very faithful to the Warhammer 40k universe, including lots of equipment from the tabletop game (terminator armor, weapons, dreadnoughts, land speeders...), psykers, Chaos Demons... The game includes a single-player campaign, a random scenario generator, a scenario editor and can be played with up to 3 other players on a LAN.

DAWN OF WAR Resources
Dawn of War is a real time strategy game depicting battles between the gothic science fiction forces of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Four factions are featured: the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Chaos Marines. Each army has its own unique strengths and weaknesses leading to different play styles. Players start with an initial base and must capture and hold strategic points to earn requisition as well as build generators for power. They spend these resources to build production facilities, and to purchase more troops and vehicles to amass their army. Resources are also used research upgrades which unlock enhancements on a faction unique tech tree. Victory may be achieved in a variety of ways such as by holding critical points for a set time or completely destroying opponents. There are 3 modes of play: an online multiplayer battle, a single player skirmish mode against computer AI opponents, and a single player story mode detailing the Blood Ravens chapter of the Space Marines defense of the planet Tartarus against the Orks, Eldar, and Chaos Marines.

DAWN OF WAR II
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is a real-time strategy/tactical role-playing video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ for Microsoft Windows based on the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe. It is the sequel to the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War video game series. Playable armies at the initial release of the game include the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids. The gameplay of Dawn of War II is markedly different from that of Dawn of War and its expansions. Jonny Ebbert, the game's lead designer, describes the feel of the game by saying that it "takes everything that was great about the original and combines it with the best that Company of Heroes had to offer." There is a heavier focus on cover, which gives more substantial defensive bonuses. Accordingly, there is also new emphasis on methods of dealing with units in cover. Some weapons, such as grenades and other explosives, can destroy cover, while others, such as flamers, ignore cover bonuses completely. Other differences between Dawn of War II and its predecessors include improved unit AI (squads under fire seek cover, for example), more realistically sized vehicles, and an improved physics engine.

DEATHWATCH - TYRANID INVASION
The Deathwatch are the elite of the elite. Players control a Kill Team of five Space Marines to fend off a Tyranid invasion. In this turn-based strategy game, each marine has a number of action points (similar to the Space Hulk board game or the old 1993 video game, but most familiar to Rodeo's previous iPhone/iPad release, Warhammer Quest). Marines use action points to move, shoot or go on overwatch. Setting up overwatch and lanes of fire is crucial as the player moves the Kill Team to each mission objective, often through narrow, twisting corridors. Marines gain xp which may be spent on abilities, traits, and stats. Players can use loot drops at the end of missions to customize marine weapon loadouts.

In addition, all factions have "Elite-classes" that must be bought with in-game resources before being able to play them. The playable races include: Orks, Space Marines, Eldar, and Chaos Space Marines. The Tyranids are present in game as NPCs, being the primary enemies in the game's procedurally-created dungeons "Under worlds" and survival "Hives" game modes to provide a Player Versus Environment experience.

FINAL LIBERATION: WARHAMMER EPIC 40,000
Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000 is a computer adaptation of the Games Workshop tabletop game of the same name. The planet Volistad has been conquered by an Ork invasion force, and it's up to the Imperial Guard regiments and a Space Marines chapter to free the planet and end the Ork threat. The single player campaign is played on a strategic map of Volistad split into different sectors. Players move armies from sector to sector, and when an army enters an enemy-occupied one, a turn-based battle is played on a tactical map. Captured sectors give resource points that can be used to buy new units and build new armies. The goal is of course to free the planet and eliminate the Ork presence. The game is faithful to the Warhammer Epic 40k universe. There are only three armies available (Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Orks), but each has the same units and organization as in the tabletop game: the Imperial Guard has several famous regiments, lots of vehicles, titans from the Adeptus Titanicus and the Orks forces can field an impressive array of strange vehicles. The game also has a multiplayer mode which allows up to four players to build a custom force and battle it out on a tactical map.

I finally got around to getting this knocked out. It's still a work in progress, but I've populated the various indices.

Some games have their own sub-forums, and those have in-depth resource indices in those sub-forums. A few of the games don't have their own sub-forums, but they're popular enough to warrant their own resource indices above. If you know of any other games for which we might add links, please post a reply here.

I'm still going through the various indices to expand the links; and I'll be happy to add any appropriate links that might be provided by members. I'll be adding the various files that are in the Downloads section to these listings.
