Proposed Article Discussion - SM Lexicon

Recommended Posts

This is the discussion topic for article: Tactica Literati

This will really help me in writing my fluff, but one of the main points I struggle with is all the complex names of things and what they are in the 41st milennium. I mean, what is a cogitator console? Perhaps an article on this wouldn't go amiss. I'm sure some people would agree with me.....

Here is what we have so far......some of them don't have sources....

Ceramite - a ceramic based material, used in armour to defeat heat based weapons (flamers, plasma, las-weapons, melta).

Possibly also used as a general building material.

Cogitator- Computer

Cogitator console- A computer input device such as a keyboard, touch screen etc.

Electrograft- An Electrograft reacts with the brain to alter a creature's memory, personality and knowledge.

Emperor's Tarot-psychically attuned cards that allow one to read the future. Similar to current day tarot cards

Gellar fields- Protects a starship that is travelling through the warp from the deamonic inhabitants of the Immatereum. [Execution Hour, by Gordon Rennie/Dead Sky Black Sun, By Graham McNiel]

Hypno-casque/Hypnomat - A device that uses hypnotic suggestion to imprint information stored in logic stacks directly into the mind of the user. They have uses ranging from at simplest for teaching new languages in a matter of hours to perhaps most importantly the rapid indoctronation of newly-recruited Space Marine aspirants into the nature of the Imperium (as many have little if any conception of a galactic empire of Man). They appear to be relatively uncommon, primarily reserved for Astartes, Inquisition, Arbites and other important institutions dirictly related to the rule of His Most Beneficient Majesty.

[Rogue Trader; Chaos Child/Space Wolf, BL]

Logic stacks - Imperium's standard hard drives, using stacked atomic chain method of information storage. [Rogue Trader]

Navis Nobilite- The Navis Nobilite (sometimes called the Navigator Houses) are an organization made up of genetically altered humans known as Navigators. Navigators hold an elite rank within the Imperium, as their abilities allow them to guide ships safely through the Warp. This power is derived from the Third Eye (Warp Eye), a feature which all Navigators posses, lets them see the constantly shifting currents of the warp in order to steer a ship safely to its destination.

Without the help of the Navigator houses, the infrastructure of the Imperium would crumble. As such, the power of the Navis Nobilite has held strong for over 30 000 years, despite all the conflict and confusion in the galaxy.

Plascrete - A material similar to concrete but with more flexibility, it may be used to replace concrete or to augment it. Presumably a mix of rockcrete and polymer technology.

Plascrete may also be used to replace metal rebars or supports in building and load bearing walls as it would would be less brittle than rockcrete and (presumably) cheaper/easier to manufacture than metals on many planets.

Plassteel/Plasteel - A material that combines the strengths of plastics and metals. Alternately it may refer to plasma forged steel (essentially super strong steel). Often used as a material in the construction of armour panels, weapons etc.

Power pack - Energy storage device using morphable crystals. Can be left in sunlight or thrown on a fire to recharge, as they absorb almost any kind of energy input. [Rogue Trader]

Promethium - This is the 'catch-all' name used to describe any petro-chemical substance in a vaguely liquid form. It is most commonly used as a source of power, and also used in many weapons systems (such as flamers and explosives) and materials (like plasteel), to even foods like protein bars and dyes. It has oftn been said that it is the 'life-blood' of the Imperium, and given the barstadised STC designs that almost invariably rely on this ubiquitous and nebulous substance (or more accurately, family of substances) somewhere in their requirements, it is a resource of near-unparralelled importance.

[Caves of Ice, BL]

Rockcrete - A material similar to concrete, serves much the same purpose as a building material.

Standard Template Constructs (STC) - A computer system that was the powerhouse behind Mankind's original conquest of the stars. Used by colonists to produce plans for anything from ploughs to cities to starships, this incredibly advanced cogitator would take assigned parameters of the living conditions and resources in Human colonists area and came up with optimised plans for whatever they requested in a form achievable with the resources available. Perhaps its most famous and enduring military design is that of the Rhino APC. Unfortunately, almost all STCs machines and many of their outputs were lost in the Age of Strife, and the recovery of even a fraction of anything related to an STC is something of a holy grail to the Imperium.

Many STC designs were rough and ready, simple and often brutishly functional, even by the standards of the more advanced Human technologies; but they worked. It is because so much of Human technology is in some way derived from STC designs, rigidly followed for millenia, that much of Imperial technology that it seems unrefined and primitive for such a distant future. Its remit for design was for the frontiers, never meant to last so long and be so used by the remaining, highly developed regions of Humanity.

[Rogue Trader]

Wildsnake - Necromundan liquor.

+++Topic title changed to reflect new direction+++

Actually an article with a series of 40K definitions is an excellent idea  (I love that pirate emoticon!)

For the record a cogitator is the 40K equivalent of a computer, although computers in the 40K world have a number of restrictions on them to prevent any possibility of a repeat of the problems with the Iron Men (robots gone bad basically). So a cogitator console is basically a computer input device - keyboard, touch screen etc.

What else might need defining? If we can put a list of stuff together it'll make it simpler to create an article.

Logic stacks - Imperium's standard hard drives, using stacked atomic chain method of information storage. [Rogue Trader]

Power pack - energy storage device using morphable crystals (hence why they can be left in sunlight or thrown on a fire to recharge, as they absorb almost any kind of energy input) [Rogue Trader]

Rockcrete - a material similar to current day concrete, serves much the same purpose as a building material.

Plascrete - a material similar to current day concrete but with more flexibility, may be used to replace concrete or to augment it. Might I suggest that if we start putting in references for where we get information? Square brackets after the entry should be simple enough, page reference is optional its more so we know how 'official' it is, as per SCC's point on a previous thread.

Obviously, quoting verbitam GW copyright may be restricted as per B&C rules.

Flak Board (used alot in the IG novels)

Leximat

Promethium (good references in one of the space wolf novels)

Gellar fields (not sure if it is defined in the 40k bbb)

Titans and Knights

The end of Eldar Prophecy had a nice definition section.

Cant find any references on Gellar Fields :? , and I was going to put in some info about Knights but again, I cant find the source for that, although im sure i have it around somewhere... Gellar Fields may be in the Lost and the Damnded books, but theyre like platinum dust so I dont have any info from them.

This is really good, thats the kind of thing I'm thinking of. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head which i need defining but when ever I find something I'll mention itAs I was the one who suggested it would you like me to help put it together in an article?

What topics should there be?

Some ideas with sub sections and topics

Adeptus Mechanicus

Servators, logic stacks, leximats.

Titans

Void Shields

Mega-Vulcan Cannons

Adeptus Astartes

Bolter

ChainSword

Apothicaries

Crux Terminus

Adeptus Navilis (Fleet)

Gellar Fields

Nova Cannons

Ordo

(Guard stuff the ordo use)

Vultures, Hot Packs, Las-Rifles

Lets avoid defining the obvious and easily-accessible, like bolters and the like that crop up in army books. We should stick to the things that most people will not have access to or at least only a vague idea of.

Adeptus Munitorum - Imperial Guard/Navy terminology

Adeptus Mechanicus - Tech-prists, Titans, Knights, Skitarii, general technology

Adeptus Astartes - Space Marines, Grey Knights, Adeptus Custodes, Traitor legions

Inquisition[/u] - Inquisitorial terms, techs, ships, factions, organistions

Adeptus Terra - planet classification, tithing, geography, beurachracy

Adeptus Ministorum - Religious, Battle Sisters

Navis Nobilite - Warpspace and Warp travel related

Scholastica Psykologos - Psychic-related

Rogue Traders - Merc and 'free trade' related

Perhaps all the different implants/organs a Marine receives?

Also, for the bolters/other easily accessible stuff. Maybe you could go over different patterns of them, and lesser known facts. For instance you could have something like:

BOLTER

See page X in C:SM (or WD).

Variations include...

Or something along those lines.

Implants and general SM initiation: http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/initiation/1/

Patterning:

There really isnt anything official so it cant be done as youre hoping. All bolters are literally the same Godwyn pattern, even the Heresy-era ones. The only difference is the magazines used, which isnt worth covering as its obvious on the models what each does :D

I do however have some 'unofficial' variants I came up with if people are interested in putting up some unofficial stuff

Ah...right. I had forgotten about that list on the website.

Hmm...just curious, but is there a way of integrating some sort of dictionary into the board? Although I suppose any searches would bring up this article...

We have looked at that, and are looking at that.

Note: Argos wants good stuff, and has used the donations to buy the software, or written it himself. So it is in the works, or known.

Now back to our topic.

Ok...dug up some old WD articles, so I'll take a crack at some definitions

Navis Nobilite

As for topics...

Offico Assinorum under Ordo groups...or affiliates

I'm afraid not.

Several patterns of bolter have been specified:

Mark I Boltgun - RT era plastic bolter

Nostra - The Gauntlets of Ultramar are listed as having 'Modified Bolter (Nostra Pattern)' attached to the gauntlets themselves.

Godwyn - The design of bolter found in current plastics

Ultima or MkIV Ultima Pattern - looks like the current plastic bolter, but then so does the MkIII Godwyn

Crusade - two known types: MkI Crusade Pattern - old RT era stlye bolter and the Mk.III Crusade Pattern - 40K 2nd ed plastic bolter

Heresy

Filienostos

Astartes Umbra

Godwyn-Deaz - standard bolter of the SoB

Martian or Mars pattern - discontinued M.32, sickle mag, very similar to Mk III Crusade pattern, listed in IA:DG.

The following are Bolter Marks listed in the Inquisitor Rulebook, no pattern is mentioned:

Bolter (Mk II straight mag)

Bolter (Mk III belt feed)

Bolter (Mk IV sickle mag)

Bolter (Mk IV drum mag)

Triplex Phall (MkIV) Storm Bolter is the standard Terminator Storm Bolter.

M33 Mark VI Auxiliary Storm Bolter - mounted on Land Raider (and since it's the same plastic kit, presumably rhino/pred/whirlwind etc)

magnoculars

It isn't a great stretch to realise these are magnifying ocular devices... or binoculars.

Found some stuff to do with the Adeptus Mechanicus on wikipedia- could be right, could be wron I don't know. :P don't know if it helps.

Electoos, metal circuits embedded in the skin of techpriests to allow them to channel electricity. These can be used in combat, or to revive a recalcitrant machine spirit. Those who specialise in the use of these and become essentially a human electric generator are known as electro-priests or Luminen.

Electro-grafts, which are similar to electoos in that they are electric circuits embedded in the skin, but are distinct in their purpose. Electro-grafts serve to interface the tech-priest with machinery, particularly sources of data. Given the right data-sources, a techpriest with electro-grafts can acquire many skills and much specialist knowledge instantly. One example of these are pilots from the planet Glavia who have Electro-grafts in the skin of their hands to enable them to interface with their ships with much greater efficiency.

Mechadendrites- ie Doctor Octopuss- mechanical limbs- used for lifting, mobility etc, easy interface with machinery

Autosanguination, a process by which all blood is removed and replaced with a more efficient substitute, allowing easier healing of wounds and such.

Mind Impulse Unit (MIU), a direct link between a human brain and a larger piece of external machinery allowing control by thought alone as if the machinery was a part of the human's body. These are most commonly found in massive vessels such as Titans and starships, and very rare in a normal techpriest. Some techpriests may use one to control a shoulder-mounted weapon or similar devices

Binary cortex, an operation in which the brains of two techpriests are joined in one body. Usually used only when two tech-priests study the same subject and otherwise align very well in their thinking.

Rite of Pure Thought, an operation which replaces the brain's creative, emotional right half with a cogitator (computer). This frees the techpriest of any remaining emotion. However, this procedure is considered somewhat extreme even among the usually non-squeamish techpriests.

It doesn't state where each piece of seperate information comes from so can't be properly validated but the whole article 'Adeptus Mechanicus' states references as:

  • 2nd Edition Warhammer 40,000 Codex Imperialis book
    Fanatic Magazine Issue 5

Void shields are devices usually employed by warships and titans of imperial manufacture (some vehicles now under the power of chaos still maintain these devices). The void shield or field is a powerful defence system that can stop all but the most powerful weapons. A void shield appears as a shimmering curtain possibly akin to looking at something through a thin layer of water. The circuitry in void shield systems create a strong smell of ozone prior to being activated. Any object coming into contact with the shield once activated is not damaged but makes a sizzling sound.

Any objects, unless fired at or striking the shield with phenomenal power simply bounce off or are halted in mid air. Organic materials, liquids or simply energy with harmful potential (e.g. a laser) are stopped or dissipated. Explosive munitions will detonate on contact. Any object caught in the field when activated is simply sliced in half. For instance, a human body caught in the beam will be sliced in half as if viewed in cross-section and munitions caught in this way are destroyed explosively. This makes the void field deadly, if impractical in offense rather than defensive situations.[13]

In fact theres loads of stuff on there.

Yeah OK I may do that. If those bits of information from Wikipedia are going to be used I'm going to have to put them into my own words.

How is this going to be set out? Is this going to be one article, or is there going to be an article of words and definitions under each relevant category. For example if there was a category for the Adeptus Mechanicus, an article in there full of words to do with the Adeptus Mechanicus and machinery.
