Adeptus Custodes

Recommended Posts

I think everyone is used to seeing space marines in a greaves 5 times wider than the actual leg. This is more proportioned to an actual leg in the old sense of non-power armor. This is more likely a hardened leather boot. But it can pass as some artificer armor that is thin at the lower leg from a technology long lost. I think it looks good. Its not a direction I would go with and I'd probably gs a more robust lower boot but again, it still looks great. And the rally nicely done NMM painting is making the model work in any sense.

I could make and could have made the legs thicker. But i didn't and i won't. Why?

Look into the Horus Heresy Artbooks where standard custodes warriors are presented... the leg armor is thin, especially around the shinbone and ankle. It's just right that way.

No offense intended, but PLEASE no more leg-shaping concerning posts any more... ...especially with words like thin skinny, flimsy, light, weak, slim and wishy-washy. Thanks.

Everything else - keep it coming.

I'm actually making plans for termies.

There seem to be two kinds of termie designs in the HH books.

The classical ones, like on the GWwebsite perhaps which are really bulky and beamy....

and a different type you can find only in Horus Heresy Vol.2, i think. There is one pic with the emperor himself in the centre, sisters of silence on the right and custodes on the left. The termies there look quite different, more agile and by far cooler. Thats the style im going for.

I even consider sculpting kinds of sisters of silence perhaps. Could be played as Soros or culexus imho....

A small troop of jetbike-custodes would be extra-cool and easy to make, but i don't quite get the idea how i could use that unit ingame. Any suggestions on this? I had thought about proxiing sisters with jumppacks with them...

they must have really skinny ankles/legs to fit in that armour

got it?

I didnt shape 'em that way, his holyness the everlasting emperor did. Ur not trying to discuss anatomy and armor technology with the most ideal god like genius in body and mind that has ever walked terra, do you? <_<

Three new Custodes basic painting:

number 1 with unpainted Flamer.... the Missing tip is supposed to be an eagle head, which i didn't quite get to finish - not as easy as it sounds.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j92/wieims/PICT0233.jpg

number 2 in furious attack

number 3, brother Andreus, with unpainted Psibolter

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j92/wieims/PICT0230.jpg

And some group shots, together with a standard marine. I think you get the Chimp-like proportions of GW marines quite well.

AND that mine are not to thin. :-) They'd kick a standard marines ***. :-P

C&C welcome.

@ pulse

I'm just trying to do an army thread. Why the hell do you just hate me....? :P

First of all - nice painting and sculpting. Good use of bits, too.

Your proportions are very good, except the heads are slightly too small, but that's a minor nitpick. Some of the standing models have one minor problem, namely that the legs are quite far apart, yet go almost straight up, which isn't exactly correct. However, this is still much better than the standard marine's pose, which you nicely described as chimplike.

I just don't like their size. That's not 'truescale', that's just completely exaggerated. They're twice as tall as a marine in power armour. Twice. If you have a marine that isn't standing on a pedestal, try using him as a scale indicator.

There's a tutorial in the Tutorials sections that in my opinion is much more realistic. This one. It's more subtle in my opinion. It could do with a bit of enlarging, but in essence I don't think truescale should be too exaggerated.

Now you've already made them, I'm not saying you should scrap them and start again, I just think that you run the risk of your force looking a bit out of place on the battlefield. My indicator is - if it's as tall as a Tyranid Warrior then maybe it's a bit too tall.

It's just what people think. If you want positive comments you should also weather criticism. And the Emperor doesn't exist by the way, an artist drew them that way, it's an interpretation. See John Blanche's famous black and white picture of the Golden Throne with Custode Guards for another interpretation.

Keep the legs that way, even though they're a bit skinny, flimsy, light, weak, slim and wishy-washy. :pinch: I think it looks good!

I'm looking forward to seeing the terminators.

Ahh, good comments...

I built them in comparison to imperial guard soldiers. Such a soldier standing straight besides a custodes that also standing straight is about the size to the custodes' nipples.

If I assume the guard is 1.80 m, the Custodes is about 2.30 to 2.50 m. Perfect size imho. I personally imagine Custodes even beeing a bit bigger than marines anyway. The emperor made them even before the primarchs, they aren't "mass-production"... at least mine are not...

In essence, using a standard marine as a size indicator is as wrong as it gets, as the size of standard marines is compared to all other Minis - imperium or Xeno - just wrong. Thats why truescale is called truescale, not bigscale.

The heads are too small, compared to a human. But as i don't wanna sculpt heads (not that i didn't try..) and small heads are a kind of adult key signal, they'll stay that way.

I'll organise a tyranid warrior for comparison... how big are they fluff-wise?

It's just what people think. If you want positive comments you should also weather criticism.

I got no prob with criticism at all. It's just that half this thread is about legs, and some more i run in german also. It simply makes me tired saying "No, look carefully, the legs are right, dont compare to usual marines, compare to yourself ..." over and over again in various languages. U would be enerved like me, i'm not Galileo after all.

And the Emperor doesn't exist by the way, ...

Heretic. Of course he does. He just hasn't shown because we are just in 2K. Yet. :P

Different paintings of the same person in different times are by no means a sign of nonexistence.

they're a bit skinny, flimsy, light, weak, slim and wishy-washy.

HERETIC...

The termies will take some time. And they will be even bigger :-) not in height, but in width. U are gonna hate 'em.

Im going for about this:

Let's go on with dicussion, but please no leg-lagging anymore.

I think they look fantastic. The legs look great. In the HH artbooks, the Custodes has very skinny legs. So, fluffwise, you are staying true to this. If you like how they look, don't worry about them being skinny because they are technically correct.

Also, for the pictures, check out this tutorial for some advise.

Keep up the excellent work man!!

I think the minis are beautiful. On a side, fluff, note, GW has probably revamped the Custodes from what we remember (back in the day).

According to the last book, the flight of the eisenstein (and osme of this agrees with you).

1. Custodes is to marine what marine is to human (at least height wise, and maybe other stuff).

2. Custodes armour is termie armour that wears like power armour (whatever the hell that means).

I think they are great minis, and sizing they are fantastic.
