Tvayumat
Galahad Knight, consider your extra armor idea officially stolen (With your permission of course) I was wracking my brain for a good way to make ablative armor from my extra sprues... genius! Galahad_Knight
Be my guest. I used large sprue off the tank frame for almost all of it. The armor on the back track guard was smaller sprue from some of the inside bits. Jus tbe warned, it;s extremely labor intensive. you have to cut each piece to length and then cut and/or file to the same angle, otherwise it looks sloppy (you can see the armor on my vindicator is a little less clean than the predator armor, because I lost patience for it) here's some more angles. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Galahad_Knight/DSC01482.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Galahad_Knight/DSC01450.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Galahad_Knight/DSC01447.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Galahad_Knight/Pict0008.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f41/Galahad_Knight/DSC01496.jpg As you can see. I cut a couple corners on the vindicator, using spacers like I did on the front track guard and just running the armor straight up it rather than using smaller sprue and going inside the nook like on the pred. But, hey, the material is free and you probably have tons of it playing around, so go ahead and experiment. Post some pics when you do Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1418720 Share on other sites
Tvayumat
Thank you for the pics, and I've already cut myself twice... I'll post pics when I get my Rhino all plated up! I'm kinda playing with the idea, doing my own style.. Feor
Just a thought, but if you're trying to get them all to the same angle, wouldn't it be easier to cut them to length, glue them on, then file them all odwn at once while they're already affixed to the tank with long strokes covering all of them? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1418788 Share on other sites
Galahad_Knight
Tried that. It works alright for the outside edges, but the inside edges are impossible to get at. Plus it's hard to avoid cutting into the model with the file if you're not careful. If I had it to do over again I'd probably use a vice or something and some kind of angle-jig Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1418796 Share on other sites
Octavulg
Why not glue them onto a thin strip of plasticard, file them, then attach that to the tank? Galahad_Knight
That can work on areas without much inset or contour, but it also adds a bit of bulk...which could be what you want. Of course, then you're buying, measuring, and cutting plasticard in addition to the cutting and filing of the sprue. There's really no set way to do it, so experiment with whatever you like. But no matter how you do it, there's still going to be a lot more cutting and filing than just gluing bits of plasticard on. The main advantage here is that it;s free and it can end up looking pretty neat. The payoff is time ;-) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1418899 Share on other sites
griffit
A few month’s ago a friend of mine had a leman russ to spare. Me being me, I had the great idea of turning this russ in to a Space wolf russ. One of the things that always bothered me about a marine russ is that it does not quite fit in to the feel the other marine tanks have. So using some scans and a few bmp’s from “wolfs shipyard Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1418991 Share on other sites

StratoKhan
How are the longer barrels made? Just a tube added in between? I wonder what Mr Freud would have to say about the extra long cannon barrels.. horus333
Yeah. The white tube is from eh, you know the paper strip thing in smaller cash registers? those rolls of paper come on the kind of semi-clear plastic tube you see up there. The ass end of the origianl canon barrel fits in it perfectly. Also as you can see, I put the shock aborber things on the sides of the new barrel (originally theyre up on that shelf like thing where Ive put the skull) and sealed the holes where theyre supposed to stick out of with plasticard. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1476010 Share on other sites
Brother_Dan'l
Some really great stuff on here. I'm impressed. I've started on a LR Ares conversion that I'll try and get some WiP shots from soon. NemFX
No pictures yet, but I'll take some soon (if I didn't suck at painting, I'd have pictures already) Predator (IFV Archer) mounts substancial sprue armour at the front to really show that it's more than just a Rh1n0 chassis, shows also 2/3 crew members. Land speeder (Argo) is in jeep style, featuring actually working wheels (sadly unbalanced due to glue+hand incident) used to sport an assault cannon on top, but I'm gonna wait for 5th edition before doing anything with it. Land raider crusader (Tardis) has multimelta mounted up front, just above the exit ramp. Has heavy bolters (I prefer them, naturally) and I haven't built the hurricane bolters, because I'm holding out for the 5th edition to see if I can have more heavy bolters on there.. Baneblade (Cloudbase) the battlecannon's tip is replaced by the Hellhammer cannon (in it's entirety) to make it look more imposing. Also, I added a barrel on the top of the turret. Fuel or water or whatever. I haven't decided yet. Also, the Termite shown earlier in this thread is awesome, but anyone else notice the similarity to the Mole from Thunderbirds? I also love the venerable dread with the marine coming out of it. If the Emperor would ever have been stuck in a dread case, that'd be the one  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1586256 Share on other sites

If this is a "field expedient" method of up-armoring a vehicle, then it won't have been done "factory perfect" so to speak. Having it a little rough would be better IMO. If you get really involved with doing this, it might be worth purchasing a "chopper": http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?M...ct&ID=82439 Love this thread! Lots of great ideas! f74
If it is no Xenos stuff you should better explain what it is and for what are you using it or i´m sure the next Mod will remove it. I guess you will use it for TSons? Sorry I thought this was for "Vehicle Conversions and the men who love 'em" in the general questions? You have Chaos defilers in this section and nothing said and don't forget the IG Termite! I never saw it say it was just Marine conversions If a MOD thinks this is in the wrong place then feel free to delete it, Sorry if a Necron Super heavy caused you embarrassment. I never saw it say it was just Marine conversions True enough. But I think that the point Dark Bjeorn is making is that this is a Power Armour centered board and so vehicles posted ought to be those used by PA equipped armies. The Termite? Well, Inquisition requistioned is the way that one gets in. And we do have an Ad Mech forum, so.... That being said, I'm no Mod so therefore no expert on these things; just my feelings, for what they're worth. **shrugs** Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/114375-vehicle-conversions-and-the-men-who-love-em/page/4/#findComment-1589252 Share on other sites
