Vaaish
yeah, I'll be working on the armor plates for the shoulders tonight. Arms are still a toss up as to if I'll need to modify them. I'm hoping I can work something out that won't require the arms to be heavily changed. Past that I have the legs and final adjustment to the waist. Vaaish
after much time lapse due to going out of town for a weekend and having to get my installation thrown together for my grad class, I'm back with the completed torso. It would probably look nicer with a bit of primer to help me find any remaining gaps but for now I think I'm ready to move on to the legs. I'll be redoing the shin armor, extending the leg length, adding groin armor, and adding armor to the tops of legs before moving on to finish up the modifications to the arms and finally getting ready to paint. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip03.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2192891 Share on other sites
Folded
Dred looks great. What plasticard are you using for the edging on the armour plates? Some kind of square profile rod? winterdyne
I'd probably modify the arm mounts to point them outwards a bit - it'll help keep the feeling of movement that the torso and head position gives. S. Bloodhowl
That dread is brilliant, if you do another one you must do a step by step tutorial, or even just do one now without the pictures (sketches if your not too bad at drawing)! I for one would use it for the Ironclad I need to convert to a venerable for my Deathwing :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2193043 Share on other sites
Vaaish
@folded: it's just thin strips of flat styrene. @S. I'm not planning a tutorial for this, but you can mostly figure it out from the pics on the previous page. cathar the great
Dread is coming along nicely. I like the more flowing design you are building. It's a bit in the direction of Warmachine, but still enough 40k to fit in. What is the head from? S. Bloodhowl
Too bad, I assume it's just removing the sarcophagus and platicarding it up? Vaaish
cathar: the head is from an old epic beetleback warlord titan. @S: yeah that's basically what I did. As far as shapes go they are mostly evident from the pics. Vaaish
More progress on the dread today this weekend. I'm hoping to finish up the conversion work tonight or saturday one everything except the arms. I'm posting this because I'm not quite sure on the shin armor. Part of me thinks it makes him feel a little too thick around the ankles so I'm asking for opinions before I finish these up and put the cables back into place. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip04.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2198054 Share on other sites

Vaaish
Thanks, I went ahead and did a combination style plating to give the impression of thicker armor in layers while hopefully keeping the foot size from becoming an issue and filed off some of the mounting point to let the shin plate sit closer to the thigh extension armor since most of the added thickness is in the front. I did an attempt with longer toes and it really came out looking more awkward than effective and I think the current look gives the impression of heavily armored but still mostly the same dread chassis underneath. This brings me to the question of the arms, should I round the edges so the curve matches the curve of the armor or round the shoulder so that from the front it curves to meet the top of the dread. Any thoughts? The shape on the front of the shin is an adjusted stele shape that will end up with some kind of freehand picture on either side with hieroglyphics running down the center. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip05.jpg http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip06.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2198293 Share on other sites
Vaaish
And the final update for now, I've rounded out the shoulder to match the torso armor. I may go back and ad a riveted plate or trim to it but I kind of like the subdued look on the arms. I've also put in another AOBR dread to compare where it started to how it looks now. I'm going to put this aside for the time being to think about color scheme and work up some commissioned epic marine vehicles. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip07.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2199787 Share on other sites
Vaaish
And the next batch is done. I don't usually update this thread with the epic stuff since it gets partly repetitive these days with the quantity I'm painting for this commission. This finishes out the whirlwinds and hunters leaving me a measly 20 rhino chassis based vehicles to go :) I'll be taking a break through the holidays to work on painting up the 40k dreadnought I converted before hitting 4 preds and 4 more vindis. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/ifwhirlwinds02.jpg http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/ifhunters02.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2216827 Share on other sites

Vaaish
Well it looks like I won't be making much in the way of progress on painting with temperatures sub freezing here and no place to prime the models indoors. However I had gotten the lower half of the dread and the base primed before the cold spell hit and I spent my vacation over Christmas painting up at least that much. As soon as it gets warm enough, I'm planning on finishing this guy up, but for the moment here is the teaser for the lower half for your consideration. The hieroglyphics on the front say Sah Nesew khetef ankh djed, ie. the kings son of his flesh, living forever. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip08.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2234818 Share on other sites

Vaaish
Well the weather held last week and I got a good chunk base coated and ready to go so I'm good for the next week or so. I still have the arms left of this guy and I'm probably going to just leave the multimelta arm as is, though I'm thinking of adjusting the powerfist arm. I also just might leave it off entirely in favor of some forgeworld arms I've ordered (The MM is going to take a leave of absence for the plasma cannon once arrives. Also I'm trying to think what, if anything needs to go on the shin guard sides since my original idea will look funny with them angled as they are. A Friend and I have also been working up a set of dreadnoguht shoulder blanks to cast as the basis for custom build autocannon arms and what ever else we might want to build, I'm attaching a shot of the constructions. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip09b.jpg http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dreadwip09a.jpg http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/dredshoulder.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2260138 Share on other sites
Capt. Lysander
Really nice work here. I'm surprised no one else has replied to this yet. The dread looks fantastic, especially with the paint on. Vaaish
Thanks, I'll be getting back to him pretty soon. I have a CC arm and plasma cannon arm primed and ready for painting, though the CC arm is only for his ironclad config. I still have to get a scratch built autocannon arm done. Vaaish
I've actually done quite a bit of work since my last post, and the dreadnought is 99% complete. I have some final freehand work and scripting to add and finish varnishing the plasma cannon arm and CC arm once the weather warms up enough. I'm not, however, going to post pics of it in it's final state until after I get a chance to paint up this little project: I've never been fond of the TLAC arm from forgeworld and having some extra IG autocannons laying around I decided to make my own. Unfortunately, the ammo drum on the bottom got slightly off true when I was gluing it and I wasn't able to pop it off. The other bits that might seem off are caused by the perspective distortion on the shoulder as it angles back. They are actually true. I'm also about half way through painting up some epic marine bikes... and by some I mean 10 stands of three bikes and three attack bikes. I'm hoping for the end of the week with them and I'll post an update when they are done. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/40k/marines/tlacarm.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2281115 Share on other sites
Brother Mordeus
Wow i love that dread, now thats how a dread should look, might steal that idea if you don't mind :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2281435 Share on other sites
Vaaish
Thanks, I don't mind if you steal the idea. I think it makes him feel more imposing and less stumpy/fat on the front. And back to epic with some perfectly wretched photos. I attempted a new method of lighting and editing and I think it failed rather miserably. The bikes themselves I think turned out alright though one closer observation these seem to be the most detailed yet poorly cast models I've worked with especially where it counted on the exhausts and bolter barrels on the front. Next up, predators and the last gun arm for my 40k dread. Cal if you want me to take some better shots, I'll give it a go. http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/ifbikes01.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119123-vaaishs-progress-thread/page/7/#findComment-2285339 Share on other sites
