Death Guard blog (pic heavy)

I am almost finished painting my Land Raider. I am pleased how it turned out. Details like picked fences on the roof, inking and details still have to be done.

Some pics how it is at the moment.

Started with my daemon prince. Every chaos army should have one  .

I first thought I would use the winged nightmare wings, make them a bit bigger, but I felt they were still to small. Then I thought, use the good old dragon wings... It's more realistic, sizewise.

Land Raider is as good as finished. It was a sunny day, ideal for some photoshooting.

That's a fantastic Daemon Prince. However you have my sympathies due to 5th edition, since his high base means he'll been seen by everyone and shot to bits, a shame for such a great figure.

Yes, I know. It's a shame the new rules put an end to creativity this way. It's magnetized so I can make a flat base, no problem. I will see how it plays along. If they can see me, I can see them! Fly 12 inch, 18 range shooting. Maybe it's not so bad. Besides, I think you'll have to focus on the body mostly. If an opponent says he can see a part of a wing, he can pop a hole in it but it won't keep it from flying, if you know where I am getting at. It's crap if you can see an insignificant part of a model, you can kill it or wound it. But thats the RAW (rules as written) flaw of 5th ed. A discussion I won't be making here.

Started painting the Prince. First of course, the face. I think when the face looks right, it can't go far wrong with the rest. It's the centre focal when you look at a model. It was a little cloudy and the camera had trouble focussing, but it gives an impression. I started using the new washes, especially baal red, they are nice. But I don't think I can do without the inks... have to do some shopping. GW has stopped making them...

Is this you're third Deathguard army? I'm still working on the Diseased Sons...

The Deamon Prince looks crazy nasty. But I too thought of the new rules, I say screw it, either you're trying to win or you're trying to look cool. Everyone forgets eventually who won, but no one forgets who looks cool.

Think of James Dean, how many movies did he make?

I too am an ink fan, the manager of the local store says you need to use twice as much of the new wash as you think. I may try using more, but honestly this seems to be a money making scheme. I'm still using all the original inks I bought back in RT time. I wish I had more. I have some of the washes and glazes but not all of them. I got talked into buying the whole box of new special drying washes.

I've been fooling around with them. I like Plaguebearers and even Nurglings for trying out techniques, so I will be painting some of those for fun since they are no longer even in the Chaos Space Marine codex...

I'm entered in a rather large 40K tournament tomorrow, probably the second largest on the West Coast of Canada, we'll see how we do...

My third army? What makes you think that? With all the converting I do I hope to finish in about a year time. But as with my nids, I keep adding and changing and re-doing models. Part of the hobby, is it not? ;)

I totally agree with your reply, thank you! I am more a painter/converter than I am a player, although tournaments are fun to win. But my problem is that I start a model, the defiler took me ages, and then on the battlefield come to the conclusion it isn't that great at all. But it looks cool so in it goes! Besides, when I am ready to play Apocalypse battles, everything goes in!

About the DP, I just read the line of sight (bought the markerlight today, it's cool!) needs to see the body, arms, legs. So no wings, banners or such. I think a model like this deserves the attention. (My winged Hive Tyrant is flying above a dreadnought, hard to miss)

I am reading the rules changes with 5th edition and I am glad I use magnets all over the place. Easy to swap weapons.

About the washes/inks, my preference still goes to ink. But I have to try the washes more. They are more subtle, maybe more suited for my Ultramarine army (still in an early stage).

Good luck with the tournament! Let me know how you did. Are you participating with Death Guard? (stupid question maybe :o )

;) these are amazing, I love your twisted mind! that landraider it brilliant!

oh, your 5th ed fears are less bad, only significant peices may be seen and shot at, (torso, arms, head, legs) not guns, wings, tails or mass of sickening green scout killing gloop of doom... which by the way is brilliant!

Hey, I've been doing this same (sorta) theme for my own DG force, and I gotta say yours is pretty awesome. I hope you dont mind if I steal the "vomiting termies" idea from your land raider.

Are you going to be making a Dreadnought for this army? I figure if you do you'll base it off of the plastic WHFB Giant...?

You can use anything. Any idea will look different in someone else's hands. So go ahead!

Sure, I'll be making a dreadnought, although I don't think I will make it look like a giant, I used all those parts already on my Defiler.

quite simply sir your work is astounding.

makes my feeble attempts at greenstuffing nurgle tanks look pointless and inane.

i have never seen a more imaginative, better modelled or better painted army in my life.

please feel free to explain how you achieve those paint effects as i have been trying to come up with a nurgle way to paint but so far i have managed only 'mess'.

again genious work sir, a fantastic inspiration to all us fly loving decayed wonderers of space

Painting isn't really that difficult. I have 2 versions to make a bit of diversity in my army, the yellow/green and the dark green/green versions. The first are painted with a mix of gretchin green and tausept ochre. Highlights with mix of camo green and rotting flesh. Than a mix of dark green ink and brown ink I have in a mixing pot, with again brown ink. The darker version is painted with a basecoat of gretchin green/charadon granite mix. For pale flesh I use a mix of astronomican grey and tallarn flesh, than highlights with camo/rotting. Magenta ink (or now baal red wash) before the highlighting and than my ink wash finish. Try it yourself and if it works for you.

Finally, it's finished! Pics could be better, but I didn't have the patience. It was hot outside! :D
